Growing Up (ahh!)
« on: July 08, 2008, 12:30:33 AM »

I have recently realised that in four short years, I will be off to college and have to know what I want to do with my life. Seriously, I have NO CLUE what I want to do with my life! I want to be a bassist but don't know If I will ever beable to make a large orchestra such as The Boston Symphony Orchestra or any other major orchestra. I know I want to live in the Boston area i don't really know why but it has always intreigued me. Can you even make a living off of JUST playing in the Symphony, or do you need another job as well? How did all of you decide what schools to go to and what profession to persue? Ugh I have no clue what I want to do!!! Should I even be worried about tis yet? Help!

Gracias!
Cassadie.

I was supposed to go to college a year ago and I don't know what to do with my life. And I like it that way.

All I want to do is play my fucking bass and be happy and have enough money. So far i can't find the ideal job. I think playing in a symphony would be good, but I'm not sure how competitive it is for bassists. Arg!!

I agree with CeeG, you're still young and you shouldn't worry that much about it. However, you should try to explore more, find out what other interests you have (apart from bass playing, but not excluding it) and why not, make a list and decide which you'd like best.
I'm 17, I have 2 more years of highschool and heh, I'm terrified. And it's not because of lack of planning, God knows I've been planning my academic future for the past 5-6 years now, but because I'm afraid I won't succeed. My biggest goal is to study abroad, to get a scholarship somewhere either in Europe or in the US, but I cannot help but think that I might fail and get stuck here in my country. Luckily, I've met an excellent English teacher in a city about 150 km away from mine, we go to her twice a month and she prepares me for the big leap O0. She's got tons of experience, she's sent many kids to big univeristies (for instance, she helped a kid get a 400.000 $ scholarship in the US) and hopefully, I'll be one of them. The only downside is the price she charges, the whole thing is pretty darn expensive, but well worth it. I'll be taking lots of exams these next two years :buck2:

i had several career choice changes through high school, and in the end didnt end up pursuing any of them.  in the last few months of school all i knew was i didnt want to go to uni, and i wanted to do something arty.  so because i had to do something i looked through the tafe(college) courses and chose jewellery because it looked fun and would keep me busy for a year.  now im in my second year of a jewellery apprenticeship.

what im trying to say is you're only young, and what you want to do now may change several times before you graduate.  and even when you do graduate, theres no rule saying you have to know exactly what you want to be.  try lots of things until you find something you enjoy

pretty closely.  Even said something similar in a job interview recently.

In between, I did end up at some point in my late 20s dropping a pretty penny on some career/aptitude testing/counseling that had probably been available for free in high school and/or college if I'd been paying attention.

C'est la vie.  Most things are not irreparable and will work out eventually.

If you want to be good enough to play the bass for a symphony, there's only two things you can do.
1) practice at least 30 minutes a day, scales and pieces.
2) study theory like your life depends on it.

Also, look at all your options. I waited until my senior year to think about it, and that was kinda doofy.

i've found that it's very rare that people do know what they want to do...i did, but i'm also crazy...

and as for playing in a symphony orchestra, i know people who are in the chicago symphony orchestra and that is enough for them to live on (at least there it is) but you can also have another job, most of the people in the orchestra also offer lessons or teach

if you're just now entering high school, you really shouldn't worry about college and stuff. just do what you like and what you're interested in. you'll eventually figure it out.

i just now figured out what i'm going to do and i've been in college for over a year.

Twenty-two and twenty-three year olds graduate from college without a career plan. Others, who think they have it all planned out, end up pursuing unrelated careers. You have no reason to feel panicky at fourteen.

What she said. Works like a charm.

Anyway, I'm going into my sophomore year with a pretty good idea of what I want to do. But you know. No idea how to actually accomplish it.

I spent most of my freshman year freaking out about it too. Then I realized I've got four years to figure it out, and I should quit being a dumbass and just live for God's sake.

In most schools they have little career counseling sessions, especially during junior and senior year. You should wait until then before you really commit to an idea I think. They're supposed to be helpful.

But yeah, that's all my crappy advice to the day. Toodles.

Well, you could go to film school...  or... I assume people make films in your general area?
You could perhaps get a toe in the door by taking a shit-work job on some production?

Are you a good enough musician to make a living at it?  If not, can you get better?
Oooh!  I just saw a TV show about the Grenadier Guards oustide Buckingham Palace,

Mandy went to med-school. No really, she did!

And thanks for all your help. I dunno if I'm a good enough musician to make a living from it, so I think I'll put that on the backburner for a while. Most of my family is into the film industry, so getting work at a low-level shouldn't be too hard, but the further up the chain you get, the more people want a degree from you.

Now the shitty part about wanting to become an artist full time is that you barely make any money unless you're like really famous like Andrew Lloyd Webber's wife, who by the way can't sing that greatly. Or you go to some really awesome art school then you can get a job like that *snappity snap snap*. I wanted to be a professional opera singer and sing in theatres doing opera. Then I was like fuck it, I barely practise, I smoke every now and then I'll just sing opera for fun and doing something else. So I'm thinking of working the music industry. Or like behind the scene stuff for things. I was also thinking of living in these apartments that are funded my the government for starving artists. Basically if you're an artist (musician, dancer, actor, scolptor, painter etc) and you have a day job or you're a full time artist you can live in these apartments and unlike most apartments where you pay your rent every month, you pay your rent when you can in any mount you can. So I was thinking of doing that.

According to Wesleyan, Amanda is an alumna with a BA, so that rather implies that, yes, she finished and graduated.

I think Amanda majored in theatre or similiar, because she was working for a theatre troupe after graduating.

I want to be an artist/sci-fi writer, but I'm afraid what the wages will be like. Plus, the world is full of artists...we...nevermind.

And then being a biologist probably doesn't lead to much either. Unless I can be one of the attractive scientists who ends up mentioned in Time Magazine.

Sadly, perhaps, our first and foremost responsibility as independent organisms is to support ourselves.  The reason I am in favor of vocational counseling/testing is that I think we all want to be artists, or marine biologists, and things like that, and we all, when we're young, tend to think any office job is tantamount to the death of the soul.  But that is such an oversimplification!  The biggest reason to avoid office jobs I hear is "I don't like office politics."  Really?  You really think the Calypso, with its close quarters and long missions, avoided politics?  I doubt it!  The thing really is to figure out what makes you tick, and makes you happy, what you like to do, and, and this part is IMPORTANT, find a way to ensure that people are going to pay you for it!

The vocational testing/counseling people tend to be really good at breaking it down in ways you never thought of.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's wife, who by the way can't sing that greatly.

You mean Madeleine Gurdon? I can't imagine her ever singing in public, as she's a designer/competitive equestrian... Unless you mean his ex-wife, Sarah Brightman? (Who is actually now far better than she was when they first opened Phantom... she only started getting singing after meeting ALW when she danced in Cats, so now that's she's had years of training... well. She knocked my socks off.)

((sidetrack! sorry, thread!!))

Oh didn't know that was his ex. She still can't sing. She just doesn't have a sound, it sounds normal. There's no depth to it.

I can definitely see why you would say that... I just tend to disagree. I like how she has three voices, I like her range, and I think she's cute. <33

you don't really have to KNOW right this second what you want to be.
even after you graduate, it's ok to not know what direction you want to take.
just do what feels right, no commitments.

Hey, I just graduated from college and am still pretty clueless. I know I want to do little with what I got my B.A. in. You have plenty of time. Just enjoy the easier work load while you're in High School. And the free food.
