My sister just got her visa to go to Australia. She's such a homebird, I never thought she'd actually do it. I forgot how she gets when she's determined.

But anyway, I'll be home probably twice before she leaves and she works all the time, so I really won't be able to spend a lot of time with her before she moves to the other side of the world. I don't know how long she's planning on going for, but when she leaves, my mum will move to France. So basically, there'll never really be a good reason for me to go back to the house I grew up in. Or even the country. This is upsetting me more than I thought it would.

Yes, but only with SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). What's up?

but on the plus side, now you've got people to crash out with in interesting places.

haha yeah, that's true! L was saying that we could go to France for a bit next summer so that would be nice. And it's also an excuse for us to go to Australia :)

My psychologist advised me to talk to my GP about meds, and I was reading up on them and most of the side effects seem pretty terrifying. I was wondering if it's really worth it :P

the simple answer is ....if you can function happily on a day to day basis and depression is not significantly infringing on your life, then you probably should avoid medication.....however...if you are like me and depression is a real and massive part of your life...then you should probs get some sort of help... (advice i need to take)

The psychologist told me to just try it for a little while to see if it could take the edge off a little bit (I don't have a real clinical depression but I do get regular bouts of sadness and fears, and all my emotions are just so strong they're pretty hard to handle) so I think I'll do it, but I'm sorta afraid of the side effects or of turning into some kind of emotionless robot. The super strong emotions and extreme sensitivity kinda suck when it's negative stuff but I'm afraid it will make the positive feelings go away too

Yes, they will zombify you. The only thing SSRIs were useful for me for was to help me to give MYSELF behavioral therapy for my OCD, and that was on a low low dosage. I didn't have any problems with side effects other than the zombification.
Honestly, I'd try going to a therapist that doesn't push meds. Meds are only good for those that NEED NEED it. It's better to develop healthier thought patterns or... what's the best way to describe it... like when you run into a dementor and need to cast the patronus charm? Pull up a happy thought and focus on it/ find a "chocolate" (an item/song/friend) that makes you feel more stable.

I highly recommend switching your diet. Low fat and high fiber, with lots more fresh veggies/fruits. It makes you feel marvelous.

Ok yeah so that doesn't sound very nice. I'm already doing cognitive therapy to develop better thought patterns and stuff, and maybe my psychologist got the impression it wasn't working well enough and that's why she proposed the meds. She's not really pushing them though, just telling me about the options and what they might do for me. If things really get bad I might give them a try, but if they turn me into a zombie I'll stop right away. I'd rather be myself with my highs and lows than a zombie.
I take a herbal remedy (not a prescribed medication) for nerves, panics and the feeling of being overwhelmed and they're great, if that rings any bells?
What kind of herbal remedy is it? It definitely sounds less aggressive than medication so maybe I should give it a try. My mum used to sometimes give me valerian extract to calm my nerves before a presentation or something, does it kinda work like that?

you could try an herbal thing like st. john's wort. that's what i take when i'm having issues, i take it as i need it too. so if i'm having a good day i dont take it, but if i do need it this is what i do: if i'm having a lot of bad days in a row i'll take 2 in the morning (after food because otherwise i get an upset stomach, but that's not true for everyone) and 1 at night with dinner, then when i start feeling a bit better i move it to 1 in the morning 1 at night, and when i'm feeling even better just take 1 in the morning til i think i dont need it anymore....

the only downside is that it CAN mess with other medicines such as other antidepressants, some antibiotics, some birth controls pills, etc. so you'd want to look that up first if you're on other medicines....and if you dont like taking pills you can break open the capsules (or just get it as a loose leaf herb) and make it into a tea! i'm actually trying to grow my own right now.

i hope you feel better though, and decide what's right for YOU! (i think that's the most important thing)

OMG literally this JUST happened! a little baby deer fawn just ran right past our window in our front yard type area around to the other side of the house and then met up with his mommy in the back of the house behind some of our lilac bushes!!! it was so freaking cute and awkward!!! (awkward cause it looks like it's still not very good at running)  :love5:

St. John's Wort can't be sold in Ireland unless prescribed because too many people were taking it instead of going to the doctor, or some shit.

hmmm... that's odd, then again i, personally, say go to the doctor unless it's (like raliel said) not completely taking over...like for me, it always has come in spurts (not like bipolar) but depending on what's going on and how i'm feeling it can last a day or a few weeks so st. john's wort is good for me cause i can take it when i want...but if it's really starting to take over everything then yes, go to the doctor

I use valerian too, for several years now. I have both drops and a spray. If I have to go out for several hours, and might cause some tension I always take a few drops with some water. And the spray, I always carry it with me. It helps. But lately I've been having some strange nervousness that are absolutely ridiculous and nearly impossible to ignore and get away. I probably should see my therapist for that again, in case it will completely take over and make my life a miserable hell again.

Anyway, valerian, love that stuff.

My mum just brought home a bag of St. John's wort so I'll give that a try. It's just dried leaves though, so I hope it doesn't taste reaaaally bad as a tea. I'll just mix it with mint or something. I'm not on any medicines so it should be fine.
