@Robin: That makes sense, especially about the burnt people. The smell of it cooking is kind of like hot human sweat, which is probably why it reminds me of stress and being overworked, but in a really gross sweaty kind of way. I doubt I'd want to eat people, either, if they taste like bacon.

I've read somewhere that the pigs do not sweat or perspire, so the toxins build up in their bodies. Maybe that's the reason for the smell of sweat that happens while cooking pork?
nope total nonsense....pigs do not sweat but they  DO regulate their body temperature in a variety of ways including wallowing.... animals do not survive too well as a species if they basically fill up with waste toxins as they grow up!

I genuinely don't understand why people like bacon. It smells like stress. Cooked bacon has such a strong and sweaty odour it gives me headaches. It just smells overworked, and tastes like acrid flesh. Why do people eat it? This isn't a rhetorical question, I invite any bacon-eaters on the shadowbox to tell me what they enjoy about it. I'm very curious.
the real reason humans adore bacon is because it tastes like human.....seriously salty pork is the only meat that inspires such real cravings and it's similarity to human flesh is probably part of why many middle eastern cultures treat it as unclean

Nope, it's not the main reason. The main reason for Muslims not to eat pork is it's strictly forbidden in their holy book, Quran. And there are some other reasons for Muslims to avoid the pork products. One of the most common reasons is the belief that pigs tend to eat their own feces, and therefore they're unclean. And according to another superstition, any man or woman who eats pork, might lose their commitment to their spouse, because commitment is not the nature of pigs.

Well, if you don't give them anything else to eat but their own feces, chickens also eat their own feces. Any kind of animal might eat their own feces if you try to starve them.

I find all of them totally nonsense, but i still have never eaten any pork products, neither before i went veggie nor after that. I guess it's mostly because pig farming is not common here and therefore it isn't a part of our cusine or culture. And i don't know if it's true or just an urban legend, but i got disgusted by the pork, because of the videos on Youtube showing how maggots come crawling out of the pork, after people pour coke on the pork.
actually the whole do not eat pigs thing is far older than the Muslims (Hebrew beliefs anyone?) and the unclean taboo is older than the idea they eat poo.... cannibalism seems to have been pretty common archaeologically, and pigs were one of the earliest domestic meat animals, so for a culture to suddenly decide to shun something they have been eating for 10,000 years seems a tad odd, unless the reason for the banning was for the active discouragement of a far more serious taboo....eating each other....contrary to popular belief, cannibalism was not simply about eating one's enemies, but a habit that was rife throughout the old world. and then monotheism and civilisation happened and eating one's relatives was suddenly considered a bad thing....  Pork also happens to be home to all sorts of nasty parasites that are equally at home in humans due it's similarity.....this also means it is far harder to keep slaughtered meat from becoming a health hazard in dessert and subtropical climbs........

In very early human settlements in Europe, it is not unusual to find pig bones intermingled with human remains....

Hmm, that makes sense. I don't have any further detailed knowledge about the pigs, but i've heard pig anatomy is pretty similiar to human's.

And psychologically, maybe i got disgusted by the idea of eating meat, because whenever i ate meat, i kept remembering it used to be another living thing-just like me. For example, i remember getting sick of the idea of eating meat when somebody said something like "oh it's delicious, you must taste it, it's lamb's shank". And maybe that's the reason i wanted to go veggie.

pig organs have been successfully used in human transplant operations....that's how close they are, physically to us.... also they have eyelashes and about our size, intelligent, social, mostly hairless looking (in domestic breeds)....Also they are totally omnivorous, much like ourselves...

^I actually can't eat pork in a sort of lump or anything, like bacon is OK if I work myself up to it and sausages are nice and anonymous, but pork freaks me out in most forms because it's supposed to taste like people. Freaky shit.

you can catch a number of diseases from pigs that you can't catch from other livestock. couple that with no refrigeration and a taboo is born.

An interesting tidbit, indja. Most of the pork we eat wouldn't taste anything like person meat. I asked my dad once, if he had the opportunity to try human meat (legally) would he do it? He said no, because if it were to be anything like the meat we eat usually, it would have to be baby person meat. Older person meat would be tough like mutton and not taste very nice at all. Probably not going to help your pork phobia, because it's more like baby meat, but babies are mostly fat anyway, so it still wouldn't taste the same.

Yeeeaaah, that doesn't help at all ;) Interesting stuff though! I wouldn't try human meat if I had the opportunity. Too damn creepy. Would you?

I say, "NO!" right now...but, if a 10-mile-wide asteroid were to send civilization into the extinction spiral, who knows what I might do on the way out?

basically no matter how you like your pork (no pun intended) it is going to taste of human flesh....one of the most disconcerting things people have reported from encountering fire victims is the overwhelming smell of cooking bacon and how they react with hunger desire for it.....this has led to many such witnesses swearing off pork products...

Hmmm, I never liked red meat and particularly disliked bacon (though everyone tried to tell me how good it is). It was one of the main reasons I stopped eating red meat ten years ago. Would this mean I'm un-cannibalistic?  :D

I got my chipped tooth fixed today and the (free!) dentist told me that I need a filling in one of my teeth so she asked if I wanted to go to a normal dentist or use the teaching hospital and I was all TEACHING HOSPITAL cos they do lots of things for free. Fillings aren't a nice thing but it's better to get it done now than have loads of trouble later on.

Fuck yeah foresight.

@Sarah - Gnnffgh. I dunno, it just grosses me out. Even with consent or whatever else. It's just too much.

@Roisin - Excellent news! I'm happy for you.

@topic - I've got a really sore back, I think because I've been either sleeping funny or spending too much time slumped in front of my laptop or something. Anyway, it starts hurting at around midnight and then hurts until I go to sleep. Then it's fine when I wake up. But aaaanyway! I'm now dosed up on ibuprofen with a hot water bottle wrapped in two t-shirts and attached to my back through judicious use of a skirt. I'm propped up and cuddling Rabbit while I watch Doctor Who. It's all a little bit OK.

I've had a sore back for ages, I can't walk with it sometimes and it's been affecting my work. I went to make an appointment for the doctor today (up the biggest hill you've ever seen. I was out of breath for the rest of the day), but they told me they couldn't give me one and to ring in the morning.

^That sucks. I'm hoping mine will pass once I start doing something other than lounging around all the time. Though it doesn't hurt at all right now - maybe lounging around on a hot water bottle is the key xD I'm off on a Quaker Easter camp next week though, and there's going to be a fair bit of walking, so I'm a little worried it might play up then. I'll take my hottie with me just in case.
