What was the first album you ever bought?
« on: July 23, 2008, 01:10:02 AM »

Normally the question is CD but I figured I'd say "album" to allow cassettes, vinyl and *sigh even digital music count.

First CD I ever bought was a single from Jagged Little Pill when I was 8 years old. I don't remember which one it was, maybe Head Over Feet or Ironic... could have even been You Oughta Know - it got lost/thrown out a year or so later due to a fire in my family's home the following year. I didn't even own a CD player - I used my dad's.

Then in 5th grade I bought the first SPICE GIRLS album on cassette... yeah, I still have it.

First full length CD I bought was Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie - Alanis Morissette's sophomore album.

I really intended this to be first CD but I remember the first digital album and vinyl record I bought. I bought Silverchair's Neon Ballroom and Marilyn Manson's Mechanical Animals because I won a 20 GB Dell digital jukebox mp3 player and it had a gift certificate to buy songs on their platform. The first vinyl I bought was on ebay - two from the same seller - Neutral Milk Hotel's In The Aeroplane Over The Sea and Bush's Razor Blade Suitcase.

[turns down hearing aid]
The memory's kinda fuzzy...

Honestly, it was either Supertramp's Breakfast in America, or ABBA's Greatest Hits on vinyl...
First Pre-recorded cassette was Styx' Cornerstone, a bit later.

I know there were cd´s before this cd´s but they were purchased by my sister  :) she used to buy me so many cd´s.

CD: Jimi Hendrix Live at Woodstock, amazing i got shocked the way he was playing his guitar.

Cassette: Los Angeles Azules  ;D ;D ;D (i am ashamed about this one)

Vinyl: 2 Bottles of Wine by Jason Webley with Reverend Payton, i bought this because i was amazed by his music and thought it would be cool, let´s see how this one sounds like... fuck it was AWESOME.

Digital Music: NEVER (Only if it´s a really only available to purchase on internet and i really want it and i can´t get it other way... not that possible).

A double-LP compilation of Beatles songs called "Rock and Roll Music". A copy of this in mint condition was worth beaucoup $$$ last time I checked, but I trashed mine through near-constant use. :glasses9:

1st CD I bought: "Fisherman's Blues" by The Waterboys (which I heartily recommend you all buy asap), but it wasn't for me - I didn't own a CD player at the time. I gave it to my best friend.

1st CD I bought for myself: "Blue Sky Mining" - Midnight Oil

Elliott Smith's "XO", which is surprising, since every other CD I bought for the next two years is too embarrassing to mention, but I still actually listen to this one.  Everything from before that was a gift, so it doesn't count :P

First album I bought was the Venga Boys on cassette. I played it until it broke. There was that and Lou Bega's Mambo Number Five and Ricky Martin's Livin' The Vida Locas singles.

My first CD was Amy Studt's Just A Little Girl single, first album was Nelly Furtado's debut, Whoa, Nelly!.

The first DECENT CD I ever bought was The Story Of The Clash Volume One - bit of a difference there!

First CD I owned myself was the Disney Aladdin soundtrack [which I still have and listen to, I might add  ;D] but I grew up listening to Metallica, AC/DC, and Danzig with my dad, and my mom was all about Garth Brooks. So their CDs and cassettes were pretty much my own, too.

I can't remember what cassette tape I had first, although I do recall have a Mother Goose lamp that had a cassette player in the base with a read-a-long book and the Mother Goose stories on cassette. I guess that counts, right?

First vinyl was by Patsy Cline, don't recall the title.

The first album I ever owned was Van Halen's first.  I got it for my birthday the year it came out, when I was ten.

The first album I ever bought was ABBA's greatest hits Volume I.

When I was little I used to get countless soundtracks, the titles of which I have completely forgotten.

My first actual album was Avril Lavigne's Let Go which I actually bought like three or four years after she became a big phenomenon. To date I haven't yet bothered to buy her later albums (although I do have some interest in whatever her second album was. No interest in the latest one.)

Yes I am yoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooung~

I'm so behind on her current work D:
Ghost in the Shell: SAC has some good tracks, though. The Maaya Sakamoto collaborations are some of my favourite pop songs (Loop, Hemisphere).

The first CD I bought myself was the Grease movie soundtrack, when I was 10.
Of course I had CDs before that, but that was mostly kids stuff, and I didn't buy those myself.

THIS LOOKS LIKE FUN.

first tape - green day insomniac

first cd - radiohead ok computer I am pretty sure.

My parents were well off but we didn't even have a cd player until mid 90's. I think we were on our way to poverty by the time they came out.

I'm so horribly nineties that my first ever tape was made by ME, sitting b the radio catching snippets of unbelievable, common people, Gina FICKIN GEE!

First one I ever bought though, was Green Day's Dookie, bought in conjunction with the Spice Girls self titled debut.

Dunno which one is lamer.

I bought Sailor moons soundtrack because she is the best.... I never bought Britney Spears but I have my regrets. hahaha.

This was followed by the "Bye Bye Bye" single by NSYNC. I recieved it for Christmas when I was 7 or 8 and was all "wtf? there are only 2 songs on here."

I owned both of those, along with other Spice Girls, Destiny's Child and Backstreet Boys albums.
I sure had an AWESOME taste in music, yeah?

I guess this is where I show my age - Black Celebration by Depeche Mode - on vinyl!
I had to take it back to Virgin 3 times as the vinyl was scratched.
Still love that album.

The first was, horrifyingly, a Barbie cassette tape. It was bright pink and told me I should dream big and party with my girl pals.

The first album I bought (and still like) was The Beatles' Rubber Soul.

I bought two at once with my birthday money when I was 8. I got the Rocky Horror Soundtrack and Alice Cooper - Welcome To My Nightmare. Both on cassette and both chosen because I liked the pictures on the cover and both turned out to be two of my favourite albums of all time.  :headbang:

OK, the first CD that was MINE, was the Lion King soundtrack, when I was like 6.
Then when I was like 10, I got Christina Aquillara's debut.
I don't particullarly remember the first vinyl record I bought, and actually, I think I got like 20 at the same time from a yard sale including The Beatles, Janis Joplin, Elton John...

What a gay little kid I was, Elton John-Christina Aquillara-Elton John....

But Elten John is such a bad ass!  I guess the Christina Aquillara doesn't help the argument, but Elton John can be forgiven.

...The soundtrack to Batman Forever was my first.  I was a sucker for the song *I got kissed by a Rose".  lets see, that movie came out in... 95? 96? So I must have been 7 or 8... that's weird.

Sure, but if one were to compare them side-by-side with, say, the Pussycat Dolls.... ?

For a prefab, eye-candy sort of a group, the Spice Girls were (are?  Did they get back together?) not so bad.

The first album I ever bought was the backstreet boys self titled. I was eight. I bought the next three, and the first two nsync CDs too. Oh, yeah, and I had posters.

Then sometime around 2002 I realised I was way too cool for mainstream trash music, and I threw all of them out. Well, except for the first nsync cd, with whatsisname in a sleeveless shirt and looking fiiiine. it spent the next year or two under my matress I had aaron carter CDs too.
But mostly because he was cute and I was under the impression that if I bought his cds he'd come to my house. I was a dumb kid. My parents totally should have known I was gay years ago. *EDIT* Speaking of aaron carter, has anyone seen him lately? I googled him just now just to see what he looks like, post-2000, and he's like, twenty now. That makes me feel old, and we're the same age. Anyway, he looks all coked out. It's kinda sad. eh, either way, you can't tell me you wouldn't hit this:

You know, I accidentally met Nick Carter in like 2002 at O'Hare airport in Chicago. Very pimply in real life.... that being said, the first CD I bought was NSync's "No Strings Attached" when I was in eighth grade.  :embarassed:

I was the nicest museum store manager ever.  I left the MoC in 2002, and I still keep in touch with several of my old cashiers
even though two live in North Carolina (married to each other), and another's in California, not to mention the ones still here
in town.  Also, it was a kick to hang around people who know a lot more than I do about various things.

You know, I never liked Aaron Carter. I had the hots for his brother, Nick.

Nick had that whole rugged thing going on. Aaron was the cute sweet brother. Personally, I think they had a thing going on.

Can we say, "Projection"?

The first CD I bought with my own money was Fiona Apple's "Tidal." All of the CDs I had prior to that were all bought for me as birthday or Christmas gifts.

The  first CD(s) I BOUGHT was at a Yardsale in Florida when I was...five? six? I bought Queen's Greatest Hits (which I still have) and Micheal Jackson's Thriller (which I think got lost in the shuffle of childhood).
The first music thing I ever owned was a Lion King cassette my dad gave me.

Still an epic song, though.

No, because projection occurs when someone's feelings are repressed and then attributed to someone else. It doesn't fit.

I think the first one I bought was Billy Joel's "The Stranger" album (1977), and that wasn't until I was in college.  Before that, I mostly listened to the radio.

I did have some regular music albums before that, including Herb Alpert, Stan Getz, a Christmas Brass anthology, and Beethoven Symphonies.  But a lot of my kid collection was comedy and novelty, including the following gems:

Alvin and the Chipmunks
The Best of Bill Cosby
More of the Best of Bill Cosby
Snoopy vs. The Red Baron (by The Royal Guardsmen)
Return of the Red Baron ( " )
Snoopy's Christmas ( " )
Songs by Tom Lehrer
An Evening Wasted With Tom Lehrer
That Was the Year That Was (Tom Lehrer)
Monty Python's Matching Tie and Handkerchief (a 3-sided album on one disk!)

...and my prize possession to this day, over-the-top in amazing dorkiness:

Jan and Dean Meet Batman

The first CD I owned was the Spice Girls, Spiceworld - but that was given to me, I didn't buy it myself. Surely that makes it a little better? I think that the first album I purchased myself was a Christina Aguilera cassette, and my first CD paid for with hard-earned pocket money was... god, I'm not sure. S Club 7, maybe? I was a true child of my era.

And then the first vinyl I bought was a second hand copy of Sergeant Pepper a few years ago. That's a little more respectable, I guess.

(and the first CD I ordered online so as to procure a signed copy was No, Virginia  :love5: )
