help wanted for c/k abaret at the fringe
« on: July 29, 2008, 12:45:24 AM »

Hello lovely people,

I haven't been on here very much lately, I was more active on the old box (defeatedbutbreathing) but I would like to know if people are going to the fringe this year, if they would be up for participating at a "c/kabaret" night and on which dates they're going to be at the fringe (if they're willing to participate of course).
My friend and I came up with the idea of doing a c/kabaret night although he refers to it as: a freakshow-ghosttrain-seminar when I was painting a painting (after I got beaten up) titled:
"The ultimate betrayal of the semi-innocent". We figured we could do a whole series of them and display them somewhere in the forest cafe... Then the idea got bigger and bigger so we decided to turn my friend's house into a little venue for a night (probably around the 23rd of august, we will arrive in Edinburgh at the 15th). We'll have a meeting a couple of days before hand. When interested send me a pm or write in this thread and I'll get back to you.

Every room in the house will have something in it for people to see, paintings, films, music
(I guess the livingroom will be transferred into a lounge/jam room so byob).

One film (almost done) is basically a short film (7 minutes) consisting of abuse scenes (cut out of exsisting films) slowed down or sped up on the benny hill theme song and projected onto a wall in one of the rooms.

Another film made by liana stillman is going to be displayed in another room also played continuously.

I'm also working on this act where a woman (or a man) sits in a corner in white underwear (looking terrified) and a "therapist" character shout through a megaphone: " You're not a victim, you're a survivor" or something along those lines. Come to think of it the megaphone will have text balloon, shouting through that thing might not be very nice to the neighbours or the woman/man who's sitting in the corner.... (we might just cut it out of cardboard)

We're working on a mime self-defence class... so anyone who's good at mime or self-defence is more than welcome to participate by (help) "leading" the course.

There will be art displayed in another room so any artists who would like to contribute bring paintings...
OR
Bring your own act/idea
BYOI (that would be instrument)

ok before you wonder why:

How we came up with this freakshow is when my friend and I were talking and we got to how I sometimes get so sick and tired of all this "empowering" bullshit. whether it be selfhelp books, dr. phil (kill!!!), your mom, friend or therapy. I understand it, I really do. But... sometimes people just need to be allowed to feel. to be real and not perfectly capable of dealing with shit. Shit is afterall shit.
I found it making people deal with emotions way too rational, including me. I fall for it. I know exactly how to deal with all the shit that comes on my way or someone else's way, read the books, did the study. very sterile, clinical, even my emotions can be clinical sometimes.
ok this is not all the philosophy behind it but I have been up editing since yesterday and it's 6.37am and I'm tired as fuck so I can't be assed with more typing right now... ;)

ok so what I need is your opnion, to know who wants to participate and if people want to bring in their own ideas.
The more the merrier!
for people who want to see what painting set off the crazy idea:

Love,
Debs

Let me notify a few people.

Consider putting an ad on edinburgh.gumtree.com, that's where pretty much everything happens.

That would be nice, could you add that we'll have a meeting on the 17th of august at the forest 2pm?
I know you would babes, and wish I could afford to fly you over... but I'm spending my last 50 euros on a busticket... Do you know if any of the us people are giong to the fringe this year?
Maybe I could make a collage of some pics of your work and display that in the art room? what do you think?
Do you have more pics of your work other than ones on the website? Maybe you can do something in the US and we'll stream it or something... lol like award shows: Liz couldn't be here tonight but we have a direct connection with her live from....<insert location>...
Miss ya!

hmmm there's a video installation that I started and have been meaning to finish. maybe I could get the footage/directions over to you and possibly have you guys set it up? is that feasible?

also I dont know any US briga-folks off-hand that are going to the fringe this year.  a few of us are trying for next year.

the sizes of the actual paintings?

50cm x 70cm and there's a huge one that's 160cm x 100cm (or something)
and some small ones 30cm by 45cm or something... Let me take pics.. I'll be back in about 10 minutes with pics.. ;)

edit:
or even better click on the photo:

edit:

some of the paintings are no longer available on photobucket... (they don't like nudity, but they do like porn) <- they left the 2 barbies going down on eachother with words like "slave, wet, enjoy, life, pure" etc
