Explosions at Boston Marathon

Are all of our Shadowboxers accounted for? I just flipped on the news and saw this happened.

HORRID.

Amanda is fine - been tweeting up a supportive storm from
her bookstore hangout in Cambridge.
Brian is in NYC (to the best of my knowledge).

For those who need to follow this minute-to-minute,
Sean just set up a twitter list of reputable twitter feeds:
https://twitter.com/indeciSEAN/boston-4-15-info

I was home and didn't hear either explosions from 3.5 miles away.

Amanda hit a twitter limit.  She and Neil have talked.

Team AFP is working on this:

They are looking for reputable places for people to donate and help.

I am OK, although I'm not sure if newbies know me.

Renegade and his seem to be OK via Facebook.

Jarboe is OK via Facebook.

Official police advice for Bostoners: stay at home, away from crowds.

Offer your home up in Boston here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1dqIKVq6IqX4BVXqOW_a9-qmXt1KJ_4Nu3NPNnC1g1mw/viewform

I'm away from home in CT right now, but if you need a hug, I'll be back by Wednesday.

I'll post again if I learn of anything specific that out-of-towners can do (but I'm sure that Amanda and Sean will be on it as well).

For now, find someone who needs it and hug them hard.

I might not be around as much as before, but all you guys are still on my mind a lot. Glad to hear Amanda, Musings and Len are okay. I hope everyone else here is okay too. Such a tragic and horrible thing that happened today. I had to switch off the news at one point, it made me so sad and sick to my stomach. Too many people lost their lives, and too many people were harmed in such a terrible way. My thoughts are with all of them and their families.

Stay safe, everyone <3

Unless your friend was planning on being a spectator at the finish line of the Marathon, she is probably fine.  This was a very localized event.  (I'm not trying to be dismissive or diminish your emotion, but am trying to reassure you.)  Also remember that cell phone service in downtown Boston is very iffy at the moment, due to overwhelmed lines.  Do you know what part of Boston she is from?

Boston Police shut down cell phone service,
to prevent remote detonation of explosives.

No I'm not sure. And I know it's far more likely that she's ok, it's just that I haven't seen any activity on her facebook or anything like that. I don't have the facilities to call her directly so I have to rely on that.

As far as I know, this has been debunked: http://mashable.com/2013/04/15/boston-cellphone-service-down/

A friend of mine who was a runner said that he was able to call out but it was very difficult for people to call in.

Thanks for all the concern and support. I'm freaked out but fine. We watched the marathon in Brookline for a bit this morning, then headed out to a nature sanctuary for the afternoon. My friends and colleagues are accounted for. Several of them were at the finish when the explosions occurred but were not injured. It's strangely quiet here. Choppers and sirens in the distance, very little traffic. It feels like the city is holding its breath. My office is at 500 Boylston, a few blocks from the blast site, in the zone that is locked down as a crime scene, so I won't be going into work tomorrow.

The most fucked up part about this is that it feels familiar.

This is so saddening, being over 800 miles away doesn't help, I grew up in S. NH just a short distance from Boston and only moved out here to Chicago this year, I spent a lot of my high school and college days walking the streets of Bean Town and know a lot of friends who call Boston home. It's hard to imagine something like this happening. I'm glad my northeast family is safe and sound, and my heart goes out most to all those effected.

If you are in Boston, here is one thing you can do:

http://nesn.com/2013/04/boston-college-students-organizing-walk-to-finish-boston-marathon/

There is still very little idea on how organized this is/what police presence there will be on Friday.  I first saw it on facebook as a BC alum thing, but I think it went viral pretty fast.

There are a few donation links popping up for the Richard family (who lost their 8 year old son, and a 6 year old daughter and the mother are still in the hospital with bad injuries) but I haven't seen anything official yet.

I personally will be also joining in the restarted (really, though, should it ever stop?)  #RandomActsofKindness campaign, to do acts of kindness for victims of this and other acts of violence around the world.

We were allowed into the office today and this is the view out the window. Hard to see detail in this phone photo, but the streets are still filled with trash, barricades, overturned tables, water bottles signs...no cars, no people. The surrounding streets are filled with cops, FBI, soldiers and media.

Ho-ly shit, Boston! What the hell is goin' on up there?

Internet says one of the guys is dead, and they're hunting door-to-door for the other.
There's "video" that's mostly audio, but sounds like about a thousand shots fired in a
residential neighbourhood.

Not just exchange of gunfire, but also smaller explosive devices were being employed by the two Chechnyan brothers.

Thanx.  Been Sheltering at Home, even before the Governor asked.

Ho-ly shit, Boston! What the hell is goin' on up there?

Internet says one of the guys is dead, and they're hunting door-to-door for the other.
There's "video" that's mostly audio, but sounds like about a thousand shots fired in a
residential neighbourhood.

Y'all be careful, stay safe.

According to the media:

The two brothers robbed a 7/11 near MIT (dumb),
about a half mile from their apartment.
Then shot an MIT Campus Police Officer dead
(sad, they are very friendly responsible police),
stole his patrol car.
Switched to a car jacked Mercedes SUV.
Dropped the SUV driver off (dumb, but I'm glad the driver is safe).
All in Cambridge.

A high speed chase followed to Watertown,
where they shot back at and threw explosions at the chasing patrol cars.
Older brother got out.
Younger brother drove on five blocks and escaped into a residential neighbourhood.
Older brother in gun battle, and got severely shot up.
Taken to Beth Israel/Deaconess where he died
(I'm surprised they didn't take him to Mt. Auburn - much closer).
Manhunt for younger brother ongoing for 6 hours now.

They are about to have a controlled explosion at the brothers' apartment building,
having evacuated that neighbourhood.
I hope enough is left for some answers to be found.

Both brothers refugees from Chechnya, next to Russia,
and been in and out of local colleges.

Less surreal than any war zone ...

Older brother was an accomplished boxer who failed to make the US Olympic team. Is the motive a simple matter of misplaced revenge, hence why he bombed a sporting event?

If they are American citizens, why is everyone going on about how they're Chechen?

So that the attack can be tied to Islamists which can thereby be tied to the Saudi national "person of interest' which can be tied to the Obama cover-up and the deportation of said Saudi national in order to divert attention away from Muslims so that Obama can continue with his Muslim takeover of the United States.

And if that makes sense, then congratulations, you're a right-ring conspiracy theorist/wing-nut!

Starved for details, the press starts hyper-focusing on the minutia of the facts they DO have. Look for them to start making stuff up by this evening.

I really, really hope this isn't the beginning of ongoing hostilities, but the realist in me says that this is likely to get worse.

I really don't like how sensational the media is making this!  guy at work was saying that during the gun fight the suspects were yelling things at the cops, and I have to wonder how the heck to they even know they said those things? It's all just hearsay, until facts are released or witness statements taken.  I've been sticking to updates on this (and Texas explosion) through here and NPR.

Not "ongoing" but continuing hostilities.

Segregation based on racial and religious difference has a long history in the USA.
New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and many other towns and city join Boston in this.

Amanda just posted her third blog about this:

http://amandapalmer.net/blog/20130421/

The comments here are a lot more entertaining:

https://www.facebook.com/amandapalmer/posts/10151448369958375

Her position is one I ultimately agree with this time, which I guess makes it all the more unfortunate that so many people have chosen now to become disillusioned from her constant romanticizing and indulgent writing.  The comments on the facebook post have elicited from me the emotions Amanda's music used to.

I am really struggling with this story. It would be a lot easier for me if Jahar were not so likable. The magnitude of what's happened has made it so polarizing that it's difficult (for me, at least) to have any sort of meaningful or helpful discussions about it.

In the grand scheme of things, the tragedy in Boston wasn't bad at all.

I was more sad seeing the government essentially declare martial law without actually declaring martial law. Many others state it's the only way they could catch these guys so quickly. I would only mention the ex-cop that the LA cops managed to take down a couple of months ago without giving a "Shelter-in-place, no travel is allowed, don't open your private business, and we'll search what we damn well want to without a warrant" order.

How sad is it, especially in the city where the American Revolution began, to see my fellow citizens so willingly give up their constitutional rights all for some fleeting notion of "safety."

Given the scarcity of hard facts available to law-enforcement in the instant, I would far
prefer they over-reach a bit and inconvenience a few people, than fail to take sufficient
measures and get more people killed.... if something similar happened in my town.

Doubtless if they come back and arrest some guy because they noticed a 30-gallon trash
bag full of weed while they were searching his house for a mad bomber, it'll make for an
interesting court case.

As I understand it, that thing with the ex-cop was a god damned disaster that saw multiple civilians shot by police anyway, so the lock-down was probably for the best to protect Bostonians (apparently that's a word?) from bombers and cops alike. Remember that you're eight times more likely to be killed by a cop than a terrorist.

That whole Dorner thing is the other extreme, they were knee-jerk and acting with no real plan, and the victims ended up with only a dead body and no explanations other than the manifesto, which was disjointed with moments of clarity.
