London Questions & Ideas.
« on: August 11, 2008, 08:59:52 AM »

I know the last we heard on brigading for the European Amanda solo shows was to 'hold off' on planning until Amanda & the Danger Ensemble got more concrete ideas about what they want to do, but what about the pre-tour show at the ICA - are there any particular plans/themes for that?

If not, I was wondering whether someone could give me some advice - I was thinking of dressing up vaguely army-style and going around before the show giving out little 'missions' to people (you know, fancily lettered etc) - anything from 'pick a stranger to hug' to 'sing everyday in the shower' etc. Is this is any way a good idea?

There are limits to what I can do particularly as I'm currently in India and materials are hard to find; I fly back to Italy on the 19 and up to London for the gig on the 20 so time for organization is shoooort but I'd appreciate anything anyone would be willing to throw out there.

Also sidenote but this might go in a separate thread if a few other people think it's an idea that has merit: BUBBLES, lots of them, at the London Koko show. I'm personally willing to throw in some money to buy lots of party-favour-bubbles to give out to people so we can turn the venue into a massive bubble storm. I know brigading isn't meant to cost money but I reckon this could be worth it if I can get some more people to participate. Of course, we might have to check with the venue if that would be ok, and we might have to make an announcement for people not to blow bubbles DURING the performance (only before, and while waiting for the encore - if there is one (when did people start taking encores for granted? ARGH pet peeve)) so that nobody gets bothered.

Sorry for the chaotic mind-spew.

[sidenote: wasn't sure whether this was more appropriate for the command center or boot camp board; hope this is ok]

Aye, true that about the bubbles Raliel.. Amanda had to tell some people at the front to stop blowing bubbles whilst she was playing at last year's London show. Sounds like an awesome idea for before the show though! The indoor sparklers went down really well at the Roundhouse, I don't know how happy venues would be about them though..

I love your idea about handing out the little slips of "missions"  :)

Hello!

I'm in the London area and would love to Brigade. However, I have zero ideas right now. What I'd really like is to meet up with one or a few other people and do something together, or even just help someone out with their project. I'm clearly uninspired (right now, at least) but I make good tea. Is anybody interested in collaborating? Of course, I don't know when exactly, but it would be good to link up. We'd be prepared. Like Boy Scouts. Only less dodgy.

Bubbles could be good. We could get those bubble things that look like ice cream cones. We'd probably get discount, buying in bulk. We could also stick little labels on, saying 'please don't use near the stage' and also something random/inspiring.

Your missions sound great, absurd.

I ended up doing something like it at Amanda's gig at Koko in October - I handed out around 50+ party bubble things in the queue outside, telling people not to blow bubbles during the show. The one problem I faced was people thinking I was trying to sell them. Once that was overcome, we turned the outside of Koko into a bubble storm. Much like the snow-foam they're blowing everywhere these days, but less dangerous (someone I know just broke their arm out there because they slipped on the foam. Not cool.)

But yes: I'd definitely be up for repeating / scaling it up at the next Palmer show / DD show if there is one.

the theme for  the AfP Human Scenery Project for The Electric Ballroom is Masques..... I am constructing about a dozen full face masks (also to be used for the later tea party installation on the south bank) each character mask will be able to do pretty much what they wish ( one will hand out jigsaw pieces ) so Bubbles.... especially if done like at the Koko show would be excellent!

I have been meaning to post in Electric-Ballroom-art-related threads for ages but for some reason lurking instead, BUT (cutting the ramble) can i get involved?
I have vague ideas for pre-show art but can't seem to process them into anything fully formed yet also practical!
What is the AfP Human Scenery Project?
It sounds beautiful.

You're welcome to be involved.
I'm not totally sure exactly what Raliel has planned because he is really freaking vague about it.
But what I do know is that there is going to be masks involved and characters and costumes and...God, I have no idea.
I think some of us are going to be meeting up at some point to discuss it, though I can't see that there'd be a whole lot of time for that seeing as it's about a month away now.
Anyway, the point is that you can definitely get involved. There's going to be threads and stuff on it soon.

A definitive answer about electric ballroom......
I am making a bunch of masques for people to wear in character for the beginning of the show..... planned masks so far consist of jigsaw-face, tarot card/playing card.... chest of drawers type thing, dictionary face
plus a few more!
I envisage particular characters handing out mask appropriate items and wearing something vaguely suitable...... the masks will be available for online viewing asap.... and people will get to choose one to wear for the occasion well before hand..... everyone is more than welcome to take part and I am looking forward to doing this..... Audrey is in charge of getting me to get on with stuff and general helping out, plus will be taking the masks over to Paris
