there are technical reasons driving this pricing change

---
only a certain amount of data can be transmitted through the sky.

so if a few people are using that capacity for videos ,
many people can't use that capacity to read email, or do
less data-intensive web surfing

so, charging extra to the people who use a lot, is a way to let
everyone use the capacity a reasonable amount

this capacity limitation is true of wires too,
but it's quite possible to add another wire.
it's not possible to 'add' another sky
More plausible if they didn't have excess capacity at virtually any time, and existing user-agreements
didn't already include a qualifier that transfer speed is subject to network limitations.......

i was speaking to the physical limitations,
not the possible business models to deal with it

not having access to the usage data both daily/weekly usage,
and growth over the years,
and what they say about future use,
i can't judge the industry's change

My simple point being that the current pricing/service adjustments (we should be
seeing "Truly Unlimited Data Plans" in the very near future, followed, in all likelihood
by a failed class-action lawsuit) is purely financial, without any basis in actual
limitations of anyone's network.

Yes, data.  Remember data?  That stuff you can up/download from/to your smartphone,
that AT&T wants to throttle charge extra for, even though people have "unlimited data"
billing plans...  The stuff that revived this discussion:

Cee, i'm looking from some reporting or analysis from reputable sources that supports the fact that this is a decision to just increase the bottom line.

that capacity isn't being approached +/or exceeded

It's decision-making by a major corporation; there is ONLY one thing that drives their
decision-making process: How can we make more money?  Can we charge more for
something?  ...charge for something that used to be free/included? ...provide less of
some product/service for the same price?

Everything else is just a cover-story.

While there's nothing inherently dishonest in wanting to increase profits, there are right ways
and wrong ways to go about the process, and I think this is in the "wrong" column.

often when a cell provider maxes out the capacity of a cell tower for air/sky transmission of data (including phone calls -- which are now just another form of data), they do have to add more physical wires from the tower to their central backbone (which cost money to install, maintain, and operate)

Cee:  you could be right about this one, but i have yet to see clear enough facts

you are a bit of a fundamentalist on this issue of corporate pricing

I am very much a fundamentalist on corporate pricing:
You provide people with a useful product or service, and you charge a reasonable price,
based both on your expenses and their willingness/ability to pay, and you have every
right to make a nice profit.  If you have to hide/disguise the actual cost of your product,
or misrepresent the product itself, you're doing it wrong.
