Say, isn't that a portrait of the famous author Jane Emo who wrote "Little Goth Girls at the Orphanage Cutting Themselves?"

She's cute, but she's either only half-dressed, or her wardrobe is substantially later than 18th C.

People who dislike themselves very much may refer to anyone they believe is a better person than they by some popular term, like "emo", and attempt to seem derogatory. Such words that are sometimes considered to be an insult are often not insulting at all, when understood. People are often called "nerd", in the same context. Do you think they really believe intelligence is a bad thing to possess, or are they just desperately, and unsuccessfully seeking to make their fears of being inept invalid by referring to that which they admire, but don't possess, as a negative quality, thus making the opposity quality, which is the truly undesirable one, good.

I don't know, I'm not a psychologist, nor a lexicographer. But I'm fairly sure their tactics of empowering their self by reversing the definitions of admirable and detestable usually end badly.

When I was at Best Buy today looking for a new computer. The salesman pointed out a laptop and said its nice and looks emo just because it was black and had a random design on it. Just because I was wearing black does not mean I am emo!!!! I ended up not getting that one and intead got the MacBook which I love to death.

...unless you're running for public office against a "member of the intellectual elite".

(Then again, that has worked out pretty badly for the country so far...  Did you mean "not well" for the person
doing the reversing, or of everyone?)

I get called 'emo' all the freaking time.
I have absolutely no idea why as I am quite sure I do not look or dress like one.

God, I have the same problem. I've been called an emo, a goth, a grunger, a punk and a metalhead - all by the same people. It's unbelievable, no-one ACTUALLY understands these terms. All "alternative" music/fashion styles are just grouped together, so many people genuinely think they're all the same thing! It drives me crazy. I had such a hard time explaining the difference between goth and grunge to a chav yesterday...

Can I ask what a 'chav' is?  Is it equivalent to prep or is it something entirely different?

It's an English slang term. 'CHAV' actually stands for 'Council House And Violent', but it's become a much more broadly used term. A chav is basically someone who hangs around in tracksuits, wearing "bling" and listening to "slow jamz".

A prime example:

.....See, imagine trying to explain the difference between Nirvana and Sisters of Mercy to her ^^

Likewise...emo(for wearing black & reading in public), goth(wearing black...again), grunge(torn jeans & alice in chains shirt...I enjoy variety in music...?), punk(heavy eyeliner and too many chains...?  or was it the rancid shirt...?) and metalhead(for wearing a motorhead shirt...what?)...along with hippie(for liking the beatles, led zeppelin and jimi hendrix and wearing a headband...?).  Do I have to dress exactly the same every single day...?  Can I not wear shirts with band names I enjoy on them...?  Can I not listen to variety without having labels put on me from each genre...?  Do I have to listen to corporate mainstream music...?  I cant stand the radio or watch any TV, so I refuse.  And trying to explain the difference is way too frustrating anyways...  And that by the way...is a prime photo example of a chav.   O0

chav    defined by the urban dictionary.

"Oh the simple Chav, what a constant source of amusement you are!
Chavs are the dregs of human existence. They live merely to piss everyone else off with their love of crap clothing and manky gold jewellery.
They have taken the wearing of tracksuits and baseball caps to a new level of pikieness.
Chav girls (or chavettes) commonly sport the Croydon Facelift (hair pulled back in a bun so tight that it pulls their faces tight) with at least 6 dangly faux-gold earings in each ear. Also often seen pushing a pram round shopping centers while chain-smoking and wearing fake burberry or nasty velour tracksuits. A favourite accessory is a hideous gold articulated clown dangling from a thick gold chain around their pimply acne scarred necks.
Male chavs hang around in gangs spitting alot and trying to start fights with small children or anyone else that they could easily overpower (which really is just small children!). Once they are of driving age they obtain a clapped out old Nova or Metro and then spend a fortune (no one knows where this money comes from, it is one of the many mysteries of the chav) "maxing it up" with big wheels, sound systems and a huge "wanker pipe" exhaust. Chavs can be seen in any copy of Max Power magazine proudly displaying their efforts at automotive design - tossers."

Ahhh... equivalent to the American wigger then.  Thanks.  I've heard tons of times, but never really understood what it was.

Basically a wigger! Certainly in the case of Miss Lady Sovereign, pictured above.

Although, having said that, you certainly don't have to be white to be a chav. You just need to adhere to chav criteria... Wear tracksuits, hoodies, bling, walk like you've got a limp, have a baby by the age of 14.... You get the jist of it.

^^Definitely still a chav.

Oh my God, I found a Punjabi chav!!:
