THIS BOARD MAY AS WELL BE DEAD
« on: February 06, 2015, 07:26:39 AM »

No disrespect intended toward the moderators, who do the best they can with the limited resources they have, but our lack of active Administrators is single-handedly killing this board.

The issue of security questions upon sign-up has never been implemented by an Admin. The Result? This site has more Spambot posters than flesh and blood posters.

Flesh and blood posters, due to the amount of spam needed to be sifted through, have grown tired of it and stopped coming here in anywhere close to the numbers we once had. And any potential new poster, seeing the spammy mess that is the current state of this board, don't have any desire to sign-up and start posting themselves.

No old or new posters coming here = site death, no matter how Awesome Brian and Amanda are.

No ultimatums (it's juvenile). No threats to leave (again, juvenile). I'm simply spelling out in detail how this site has gotten to its current "circling the drain" status.

It makes me sad knowing what this site once was.

"chuck of the internet" - I like that.  :)

back on topic: The decline in posting started way before the current spambot plague. If I had to put a date on it...well, when did that poem for dzokar (or however you spell it) first get posted? Right around there.

Only reason I've stuck around as long as I have is because the obsessive compulsive in me likes weeding out the bots every few days. Also I like you guys.

I think that was already during a sort of decline. Did that contribute? I'm sure it didn't help.  One one hear discussed it the way some people did on twitter and on blogs.  Most of it the kind of inflamed and blind rage that happens when people are hurt and distressed.  There was also the kickstarter kerfuffle over paying the musicians which was in my heart, felt it was petty and wrong to throw that into Amanda's face when it was something, as a fan, always kinda looked forward to. that interaction seemed so vital and real.  Personally I think everyone has had some life changing moments after all of this, we kinda went through it together, a kind of shared experience, even if our lives are all very different.  Some of us withdrew because life was moving in a different current.  touching back here seemed harder.
After the book tour,  coming here was easier, but now it was lonely.  I think we will find our way back, or maybe some of us won't.  I like how there isn't a standard for a 'true fan' which there can be in some fan boards.  it's a strength that I think will make this survive.

I miss lots of old boxers. But I think we can bring this chuck of the internet back to live with fresh amazing members like AnaRusalka, right?

There are several factors, the major one being the rise of other social media. I would guess that all boards like this have declined in usage. Amanda puts most of her fan time on facebook & twitter  so it's hard for us to sustain the energy when there's little input from her. Even her blog is sporadic these days. Secondly, it's hard when there's no tour or album to support. This community didn't seem to get energized about the book, probably because many of us are here for the music. As Amanda takes care of Anthony, doing only a few small gigs, the activity here will diminish. When the next Big Thing happens, it will be good to have the Box.

Can anything be done to revive the board or do we just hibernate for awhile? I think making it a "gated" community might help. There are so many other sites for drive-by commentary, would it hurt to have a protected space? I know that the vision of the app was that it would be a more private, fan-only space, but it never seemed to gain momentum.  I agree that the spam issue makes me not want to bother going through the new posts. The irony is, her fan base is bigger than ever, we're just scattered.

Awe, thank you! I like to think that too, especially because I just got here. I'd hate to see this place dissapear.

What River Vox said.

There are more views when Amanda is on tour,
but not all that many more posts.

The move towards other social networks (mostly Facebook) killed many of the boards I was in. This happened, I believe, because FB turned out to be the first real global social network - Orkut was once the defacto SN here in Brasil, but is dead by now. Beebo (not sure if the name is correctly spelled) was huge in the UK. And so on...

But none was so hegemonic as FB is today. IMO, that is bad. Specially when we talk about communities. Even when I'm participating in FB discussions on groups or posts neither of them seem to be a unity: They all look like comment boxes. It is all really vain and ephemeral, which, I think, has to do with the way FB organize things, where almost everything  get lost really quickly and you barely take part of things unless you are all day long there.

So I do believe the rise of these other tools helped people move away from here.
