2015/04/09 - Thursday in Atlanta @ the Variety Playhouse

This is mostly for those that are coming to Atlanta for the show and have never been. It might offer advice or suggestions to others as well. I've broken it into sections to make it a little "easier" to consume. I have not included anything that isn't somewhere that I've eaten, shopped, stayed, etc over the last 20+ years of living in atlanta.

Arrival:

Atlanta traffic sucks and trying to give a recommendation of the best route to take to get to a specific location changes during morning rush hour, lunch, and evening rush hour. I could try and provide the "hours" that suck, but even that varies. If you are arriving between 4pm-7pm, start by buffering an extra hour. If you exit the highway for surface streets and need directions to the venue, make sure to stress LITTLE Five Points by/near Virginia Highlands. This is because we also have Five Points which is not where you want to go. If you can arrive from out of town prior to 4pm you'll likely be arrive stress free.

If you are like me and have/will fly to other cities for concerts and then use local public transportation, go ahead and start hating this city. The closest rail stop on Marta is Inman Park/Reynoldstown but while easily walkable to the venue, there aren't sidewalks. So keep that in mind. Also, not only does the city suck at public transportation, hailing cabs can be a pain in the ass depending on where you are. Some locations are better, so keep either a cab company number on hand, or try/use Uber.

Accommodations:

The only real hotel that is walking distance from the venue is The Highland Inn at 644 North Highland Avenue NE, Atlanta, GA 30306. They have a small number of rooms so once sold out, the closest hotels are a little further west down Ponce de Leon where it intersects with Peachtree. This is "THE PEACHTREE" everyone mentions. There are others (road/ct/lane/hell), but "we" use this one as a landmark. You can also look into airbnb.com or vrbo.com to try and find closer. There's also couch surfing sites, etc.

Little Five Points (L5P):

part 1: "culture"

The area of L5P has changed considerably since I first moved here. But musically the main staples to me are the following:

Wax n' Facts
http://www.waxnfacts.com/
432 Moreland Ave N.E.
Atlanta, Georgia 30307

Criminal Records
http://criminalatl.com/
1154-A Euclid Ave NE
Atlanta GA 30307

I couldn't begin to listed the number of bands that have done in store appearances, short sets at, both, and/or I drove them there to do so. I find Wax n' Facts to be more of a crate digging vortex where I've sourced some vinyl I still don't come across on ebay. On the other hand Criminal Records is closer to shopping in the "High Fidelity" shop. I've gone in just to ask if they have the latest [insert insulting single/album here] just to see the response. Then again this is the only store in Atlanta that I ever found new releases from the Legendary Pink Dots, Edward Ka Spel, Tear Garden, SWANS, etc. At the moment I'm too lazy to look at my music collection to sort by purchase location to extend the "etc." Sorry.

part 2: "food"

There's plenty of food and drink to be had near the venue. These are in no order at all so don't take placement as a recommendation; i've been to all many times and keep taking people to them (or sending them when i can't join them):

The Vortex (21 and over)

438 Moreland Avenue NE
Atlanta, GA 30307

Savage Pizza

484 Moreland Ave

351 Moreland Ave NE

Tijuana Garage Taqueria & Cantina

351 Moreland Ave NE
Atlanta, GA 30307

The Porter Beer Bar

1156 Euclid Avenue
Atlanta, GA 30307

The Brewhouse Cafe

401 Moreland Ave
Atlanta, GA 30307

Venture Out:

As much as I want to sell ATL as a weekend getaway, a Thursday night stop-over on the way to a Saturday night show in New Orleans is a very hard sell to a road tripper. Friday night's show is a 2.5hr drive away from Atlanta, and Saturday's is a 7hr drive from Atlanta max. If you arrive at the right time and place, any of the following are worth the journey, to/from the venue:

The Majestic
http://www.majesticdiner.com/
1031 Ponce De Leon Ave.
Atlanta, GA 30306

The Clermont Lounge
http://clermontlounge.net
789 Ponce De Leon Ave NE
Atlanta, GA 30306

El Bar
around the back of El Azteca Midtown
939 Ponce De Leon Ave NE
Atlanta, GA 30306, United

Goin Coastal Seafood (has gluten free menu items)
http://goincoastalseafood.com/
1021 Virginia Ave NE
Atlanta, GA 30306

The Varsity
http://thevarsity.com
61 North Avenue NW
Atlanta, GA 30308

Eats
http://eatsonponce.net
600 Ponce De Leon Ave NE
Atlanta, GA 30308

Fellini's Pizza
http://www.fellinisatlanta.com/
909 Ponce De Leon Ave NE
Atlanta, GA 30306
and
1634 McLendon Ave NE
Atlanta, GA 30307

Flying Biscuit Cafe

1655 McLendon Ave NE
Atlanta, GA 30307

Taco Mac

1006 North Highland Avenue Northeast

I thought this might be the best place to post....

I originally really wanted to go to this concert but I bunch of things happened in the last week and I just can't deal with it right now. I don't have the time or emotional energy to drive up to Atlanta (I'm a few hours away).

I can transfer my ticket to whoever wants it. Just let me know. Free.
