The latest dust-up was in the Gerard Finneran thread (called something like "A Young Family Member"--you can't miss it--it should be on page 3 or so by now and is about 25 pages long).  I dunno...Coprophagiac showed up as the Master of Cheese and then got banned again...as far as the rules go, I think we mostly ignore them unless threatened, so I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.  I figure the time when my posts are deemed too offensive would be the time for me to leave, anyway.

(I'm kind of shy, so I don't usually say hi to Shadowbox people I recognize unless they come up to me.)  Before going into a new song (Defiled Corpse) about a dead friend, she mentioned that she needed to give a shoutout to another dead friend and then stumbled over pronouncing his name (which she had written on her arm,) correctly, and mentioned that he'd had some controversy lately or something. (I think Katherine was standing near me, and she assured Holly that she'd said the name right.) A few people cheered. That was about it. Most of the crowd seemed confused. Then they played the song, which I thought was a bit outside their usual style, but very good.

It's not as if you need to solve a riddle to get to any of the sections. This is leisure activity. You have time. If you want to check the new sections, you can. If you don't, you don't have to. Easy and simple. Easier and simpler, in fact, than sifting through dozens of threads like "Talk about the last person's butt", Inventory all the items in your bedroom", "Happy Birthday, spambot #119" to get to a thread discussing an actual idea. Some people prefer green M&Ms. Now they are in separate bowls. They are all still on the same table. They are easy enough to get to.

I have seen this arrangement on dozens of forums. It solves a HUGE problem. Unfortunately, it is a problem that is only recognized by a certain percentage of people. It's like having kids at the grownup's table. The kids don't see the problem, but the adults would like to see conversation a little more segregated. It makes the forum more appealing to a number of people who might try it on for size. If someone wants idle chatter, it is still there. Fucking hell. Are people so offended by the suggestion that list threads are idle chatter that they not only want them to exist in quantity, but they want simultaneous billing with mindful conversation? Is the indignation so deeply ingrained that you can't see the value in giving subject driven threads a sanctuary from form driven threads? (Those two terms should be credited to another forum member, but I won't call her out unless she wants to take credit).

It's not confusing. It's not complicated. Forums all over the globe do this. Don't insult yourself by suggesting it's too complicated for you to grasp.

I can understand and work with the change, but I'm still undecided on whether or not I think it was necessary. Not that my opinion will count for much. :shrug:

It might not have been necessary, but I think it makes things a bit nicer and simpler in terms of finding exactly the threads you might want to respond to.  I don't really have a whole lot to contribute to the Personal or Enterntainment sections, but I do tend to gravitate to stuff in the Grey Matters and Current Events arena.  The new sections mean that I don't have to scroll through a lot of threads that I'm not interested in to get to what I want to respond to.

I was the one who said that the new division seems to be between threads that center around form that tend to be much more broad and varied in scope (Random thought, This or That, etc.) and threads that center around subject that tend to be more in depth (Current Events, Personal, Entertainment).  By nature, because form threads tend to have a lot of randomness, you're not going to get in depth to one subject so much as have fun with different creations around the form. 

One nice thing about this is once discussion about a subject is over, it gets pushed to the bottom and not really revitalized, but there are a lot of people who contribute to "form" threads everyday and so they are consistently at the top/most recent of the former Everything Else section.  Again, I enjoyed the form threads for a while, but just don't contribute as much anymore, and so I have to scroll through those to get to the threads that interest me.

I think after adjustment, this will be easier and people will be able to find what they want to post in faster.

Whatever you do, DON'T get a Compaq laptop or desktop.  Compaq fail at everything.

hm, i have a compaq laptop and it works perfectly, never had any issues with it. i used to have fujitsu desktops and there was always something wrong with them.
i've never had a toshiba or lg though, but what i've heard is all pretty good.

edit: by the way, i have the compaq presario cq71-310. it cost me a little less than £400. the newer version is a little over £400 i think.

don't take the compaq insult personally.  i just had a few friends that all got compaq computers and they all broke within the year.  i've heard they're really slow, too. 

i was skeptical about getting a toshiba, because i thought it was quite an old fashioned make (which it actually is) but my laptop's fantastic.  it's a bit bulkier than my old one, but she loads up really quickly and i've not had any problems with her at all.
i didn't even know lg did computers til we got one  but it's pretty good.

i didn't take it personally! i just thought i'd share my thoughts. i got my compaq in february, so i suppose a lot can still go wrong, but with the desktops that i've had, the issues started pretty much immediately. my compaq is pretty fast though. i don't really have any laptops to compare it to, but compared to my previous desktops, it's really fast.
haha i've only known about lg computers for a few months or so. first i thought they only made phones

oh and indja, do you know if you might need to take your laptop with you to uni or somewhere else? in my first year, i'll need to take my laptop with me to school regularly, which is the main reason why i didn't get a desktop. when i'm at home it's connected to a monitor and an external keyboard, so it feels like working with a desktop when i'm at home.

I have no problem at all with mixy-matchy. On thinking about it, I should be getting a big smelly payday at the end of this month - think like three months worth in one xD - so my budget might swell a fair bit. Then again, this is the prime season for Manchester vintage fairs, so it may in fact buckle and collapse entirely in the name of to-die-for skirts and monster-killer jackets

...sorry, got distracted.

The stuff I'm going to be running is nothing too shmancy - internet, word documents, MSN and Skype, nothing else especially magnifico. Then again, I really, REALLY don't like having to buy new stuff - I'm not one of these to upgrade if I can help it - and I'd really like to do some music stuff on it later on, maybe some arty things as well. The main thing is that I tend to do everything at once (right now I'm streaming a video, on the Box, on MSN and Skype, downloading some stuff onto my MP3 player and typing a bunch of stuff up, though I don't think any of that takes up a big amount of... whatever it is that running things take up).


@Lucy - I don't think I'd need to take it with me - I fucking hate typing, I really only do it so people can read it, so if I'm making notes it'll be on paper. Same as if I'm revising or researching things - books, pen and paper ftw.

Darned handy, sure, but not real "applications" such as one uses to do things on one's real "computer"....


...and I belong to the bad-experiences-with-Compaq club.  We got one new many years ago, and it
never worked as well as the refurbished-antique machines we've had since.

We've had good luck with Dell machines.  Macs are good, of course, but they're absurdly expensive,
and if you're used to dealing with a PC, there's a learning curve.

Since Backstabber predates Amanda's actual association with Mr. Folds, unless it's a fan-protest
thing like Christopher Lydon, I think it unlikely she wrote it about him...  (Or they could have met
