Sometimes you spit people out and yet they return again and again.  What are your feelings on this?

What is my place here?

You, murmuringmurder, are closely aligned with the way of the Shadowbox, are part of its vast unity.  Because of the purity of your understanding, your desires for pudding and tea are closer to the path than the self-conscious searching and distinguishing of others.

The path of the Shadowbox is not an easy one.  You yourself have experienced this on many occasions, BillH.  Although many are drawn to the Shadowbox, its force must not be underestimated.  Some find themselves lost and must venture elsewhere in order to regain their sense of self.  And yet, once one has seen the heights of the great bird, one cannot return to the ways of the small landbound creature without having been awakened.

Who truly loves me?

Like your namesake, you are a warrior in love.  And yet, be cautious Ma Chao, for constant desire may lead to turmoil.  As you suspect, nearly all of the women of the Shadowbox love you, so be careful with their hearts.

Angel Raliel, I am merely the locus through which thoughts pass.  Those who gaze at me often gaze at themselves.  That which is in their hearts is also within the Shadowbox.

Understanding that desire is the creator of suffering will require patience.  The view of the small and the great is relative.  What is small may grow larger, be obscured by an even larger object, and then grow small yet again.

To wait for one voice to bring it together is as pointless as waiting for no one.  Bring all things together equally and allow the process of change to go on unimpeded.  It is also said: rising festival prices, wary law enforcement, and competition from “Eagles of Death Metal” and “Bach for Breakfast” will present many obstacles.

Why not all four?

Except, cocaine addiction comes second, and millions of dollars come first.

After you do millions of dollars of coke, you geek the FUCK out because you can't handle tweaking anymore, and then you're admitted to. . .  oh. . .  what's that place for famous people?  Cedar Sanai?  I don't know, some fancy shmancy place for druggies with the dollahs.

I guess that takes the "designer" out of it. . .

Mr. Anagrammatism and BillH, the Shadowbox is as difficult to contain as the wilderness.  The monkey does not wish to be kept in a cage; even if you treated it like a king, its spirit would not be happy.  And yet, is it not more perspicacious to walk the middle path?  Imagine that two people have a disagreement, and one gets the better of the other, does it follow that one is right?  Are both right and both wrong?  Neither can know, and others are even more bewildered.  Who can we ask to give us the right answer?  Someone who thinks one is right?  But then, how can he give a fair answer?  Someone who agrees with both?  But then, how can he make a judgement?  It is clear that these disagreements cannot be sorted out, even after many pages of discussion.   Those who rise above distinctions and walk two roads may step out into the world refreshed.

When I become famous as all fuck, I will have a forum dedicated to me... just like Brian and Amanda does. Joe Rogan's forums have more rules than mine will. Only threats, plans to commit crimes and criminal pornography will be banned.

Is The Shadowbox in everyone? Is everyone a part of The Shadowbox? Is the Shadowbox part of a larger whole? Does The Shadowbox like Breyer's Mint Chip ice cream?

The Shadowbox is merely a locus; those whose consciousness passes through it are contained within, much as if one were to meet at the crossroads of Mass Ave and Main for Chocolate #3.

Shadowbox: How do you properly pronounce my user name? Answer correctly and I will follow you to the end of my days.

P.S. Bunnicula. That brought on a gigantic flashback.  :)

Shadowbox, on whom would you bet: Bunnicula or Zombie-Rabbit?

It is said:  If one meets Bunnicula in the road, kill him.  However, this may not be applicable to Zombie-Rabbit.

Shadowbox...

1. What of Jussi Rautio? What am I to do? He is a terrible thing, yet he is as a part of me as I am to my Mother. He is and I hope will never always be my love. Cursed band.

2. Will Kati and I heal?

3. Who is this Jussi from Warlord. Who is the one that is suppose to heal me?

Words work because they mean something.  Yet, words are like the ebb and flow of sea.  If we cannot define a word's meaning, it doesn't really say anything.   What has clouded our understanding that we must distinguish what is from what is not?

Though goblins and sprites may disturb your rest, do not fear them, for their association with the night is simply a combination of ideas produced by the mind.

As the poets say:

And wilt thou have me fashion into speech
The love I bear thee, finding words enough,
and hold the torch out, while the winds are rough,
Between our faces, to cast light on each?

Cadenza, the Shadowbox is a indeed superior diet aid, much closer to the truth than the followers of the Zone or the Atkins.  If one follows the way of the Shadowbox, one may be rewarded with the cheese sandwich, the pint of Häagen-Dazs, and the Cinnabon.

The wise say:

Those who are positioned auspiciously have clearer vision.

No, about Gerard getting a shout-out!

You'll have to ask Pixiepaperdoll. I wasn't there.

So, you were at the show, but you weren't there for the shout-out.

That was the most complicated bit of simplicity ever.

Edit: Actually, you know what? I'm beyond confused and I doubt that's right, either. Fuck it.

Pixie, you tell the story!

Tara forgot her camera in the Jeep. I had to play gopher. When I returned, it was all over but the crying. It would be awesome if a clip popped up on Youtube. As I understand, Holly incorporated his deceased status into the discussion and lead in to the song.

Dear Shadowbox, What is the meaning of life?

Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them - that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally.  If one sits on one's hands, one may observe the world passing but receive a poor grade.  Occupying one's hands may lead to temporary enjoyment, but one may then lose focus.  The wise use their hands temperately.   It is also said:  It is futile to speak to a stone and expect to be answered.

Do not panic, young Briezion, for life cannot be reduced to a number.  For the experienced wanderer, all forms of life may be disappearing before one's eyes, and yet one's inner calm is undisturbed.

Briezion, your confusion has obviously clouded your mind, causing your words to be jumbled.  I recommend ten hours of vipassana meditation a day for the next year or two, after which things will be clearer.  Only through this process will you understand the truth.

Mars is quite lifeless.  The subway closes at midnight, and you can't get a decent martini anywhere.

For you, too, I recommend five or six years of contemplation.  You will need to greatly reduce your posting habits in order to focus your mind.

Wasteland, the Shadowbox welcomes you back into the fold.  Your confusion about the Shadowbox's great transformation is understandable.  All forms of speech are allowable* in the new regime of the Shadowbox.  Mr. A has been reincarnated as My Blue Period.

And can BillH give me a job adding bands on Myspace? I think I might really have a career in selling my soul. Can I talk about Tara, without talking FOR HER or starting a whole thread for it? Was that rule directed at Wyatt? Was she banned or is she just not here? Who's banned already, anyhow?

Hey, Wasteland.  Tara wasn't banned, she got fed up and left--you can read the entire saga:

http://theshadowbox.net/ddbb/viewtopic.php?t=16049
http://theshadowbox.net/ddbb/viewtopic.php?t=16072

The latest dust-up was in the Gerard Finneran thread (called something like "A Young Family Member"--you can't miss it--it should be on page 3 or so by now and is about 25 pages long).  I dunno...Coprophagiac showed up as the Master of Cheese and then got banned again...as far as the rules go, I think we mostly ignore them unless threatened, so I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.  I figure the time when my posts are deemed too offensive would be the time for me to leave, anyway.

That was pretty hilarious.

Whoa! You were there?

I believe this calls for a story.

...but I didn't realize she was there.

I'm not great at recounting stories, but yes I was there. (I'm kind of shy, so I don't usually say hi to Shadowbox people I recognize unless they come up to me.)  Before going into a new song (Defiled Corpse) about a dead friend, she mentioned that she needed to give a shoutout to another dead friend and then stumbled over pronouncing his name (which she had written on her arm,) correctly, and mentioned that he'd had some controversy lately or something. (I think Katherine was standing near me, and she assured Holly that she'd said the name right.) A few people cheered. That was about it. Most of the crowd seemed confused. Then they played the song, which I thought was a bit outside their usual style, but very good.

I wish I had caught the shout out though. It would have enriched my week greatly.

Well, my local pub has had free wireless internet in it for the past year, so having a Carlsberg, watching the football and posting on the Shadowbox at the same time makes no difference to me!

Shadowbox,

Is my sporatic presence here appreciated, or is there a great collective internet mumble of "Who is that?" when I appear?

The Great Darkness that passes over the Shadowbox is always there, casting its essence on the actions of those beneath.  And yet, if one were to see the Shadowbox as if one were a great bird looking down upon the earth, would not one see a consistent pattern?

The poets say:

Where order in variety we see,
And where, though all things differ, all agree.

Yea, it is said:  Unto the end times of the Shadowbox, the slaying of the provacateur by jealous Romans shall cause its spirit to be resurrected in a stuffed parrot in a Parisian garrett, whereupon it shall return to the Shadowbox and cleanse the self-righteous with its squawking.  In these days shall the parrot lie down with the badger.

Dear Mr. Shadowbox,

What can the various solutions of the Friendman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker Metric for an isotropic energy-momentum tensor at singularity point tell us about the true nature of Einstein-Riemannian spacetime and the future of the universe?

Indeed, whether the Shadowbox will expand, remain constant, or contract is one of the great mysteries.   However, the constantly wise suggest that the shadowy, even dark energy that permeates the Shadowbox will fuel its expansion, along with a decent album or two.

Hurricane Hugo, some say Kentucky is not Alabama, others that Alabama is not Kentucky.  And yet, are they not both the South?  The powerful Have Written:

"We appreciate that you took the time to contact us regarding one of our commercials. We are always happy to hear from our customers. In regards to your question as to why the song “Sweet Home Alabama” is being played in the background of this particular commercial, it is because it's Southern-inspired and that’s what KFC is all about.

Thank you again for contacting us.

I do not bring a question this time, but an observation. I expected humor and cynicism in this thread. While the former is present, the prevailing sense I have of this thread is that it contains simple wisdom. It reads much as an Ask Buddha thread might.

Because the Earth and Moon do not follow orbits that are defined by a plane through the middle of the sun.
More precisely,
'cause the plane of the moon's orbit around the earth is declined by more then ~.5 degree,
from the earth's orbit aound the sun
one has to take into account the diameter of the earth

perhaps the shadowbox will still reply!

Dear Shadowbox,
is it odd that I rediscovered this thread the day before it was bumped?

Let's consult my grandmother!

Quote from: Grandmother Schoen
Not broken? Every social system is a little broken. That's why communities evolve. Besides, there are ways of changing things that aren't necessarily fixing them. When Grandfather painted his 1972 Imperial, was that fixing it? No, but it sure did improve the damn thing. As long as you have summoned me from beyond the grave, ask them if they really can't think of a single thing that might have inspired a feeling of needing to fix things. From up here, when the orgies stop for long enough to allow me to pay attention, I could see a few glaring problems.

It's not as if you need to solve a riddle to get to any of the sections. This is leisure activity. You have time. If you want to check the new sections, you can. If you don't, you don't have to. Easy and simple. Easier and simpler, in fact, than sifting through dozens of threads like "Talk about the last person's butt", Inventory all the items in your bedroom", "Happy Birthday, spambot #119" to get to a thread discussing an actual idea. Some people prefer green M&Ms. Now they are in separate bowls. They are all still on the same table. They are easy enough to get to.

I have seen this arrangement on dozens of forums. It solves a HUGE problem. Unfortunately, it is a problem that is only recognized by a certain percentage of people. It's like having kids at the grownup's table. The kids don't see the problem, but the adults would like to see conversation a little more segregated. It makes the forum more appealing to a number of people who might try it on for size. If someone wants idle chatter, it is still there. Fucking hell. Are people so offended by the suggestion that list threads are idle chatter that they not only want them to exist in quantity, but they want simultaneous billing with mindful conversation? Is the indignation so deeply ingrained that you can't see the value in giving subject driven threads a sanctuary from form driven threads? (Those two terms should be credited to another forum member, but I won't call her out unless she wants to take credit).

It's not confusing. It's not complicated. Forums all over the globe do this. Don't insult yourself by suggesting it's too complicated for you to grasp.

It's just an extra click or 2 to get to some of the more serious topics.  I'm lazy as hell and I can commit to those extra clicks if I have something I wanna say or of I wanna follow a thread.  Give it a coupla weeks and maybe you will like it better?  Maybe...

I think it was sarcasm.

It might not have been necessary, but I think it makes things a bit nicer and simpler in terms of finding exactly the threads you might want to respond to.  I don't really have a whole lot to contribute to the Personal or Enterntainment sections, but I do tend to gravitate to stuff in the Grey Matters and Current Events arena.  The new sections mean that I don't have to scroll through a lot of threads that I'm not interested in to get to what I want to respond to.

I was the one who said that the new division seems to be between threads that center around form that tend to be much more broad and varied in scope (Random thought, This or That, etc.) and threads that center around subject that tend to be more in depth (Current Events, Personal, Entertainment).  By nature, because form threads tend to have a lot of randomness, you're not going to get in depth to one subject so much as have fun with different creations around the form.

One nice thing about this is once discussion about a subject is over, it gets pushed to the bottom and not really revitalized, but there are a lot of people who contribute to "form" threads everyday and so they are consistently at the top/most recent of the former Everything Else section.  Again, I enjoyed the form threads for a while, but just don't contribute as much anymore, and so I have to scroll through those to get to the threads that interest me.

I think after adjustment, this will be easier and people will be able to find what they want to post in faster.

Very good points. Some conversations deserve to not get buried. We all know, as rich as a conversation might be, it gets lost if it drops to the bottom of the page... or off the page. With the proliferation of "Tell me what your dog did this morning" threads, this is likely to happen far too often, just because the conversation lapses for a bit.

Necessary? I don't know what the standard is for "necessary", but I do know that this move is a good one.

Doesn't a happy birthday thread lose all its meaning when they are all the same, extremely frequent and with nothing personalizing them?

That's something built into the board system.  Since they are all boards within a board it lists them as such.  If I could change it I would.  I hate children.

But, Shadowbox, am I missing something?  Why are these new subsections called Child Boards?

Big bump (no pun or sarcasm intended)....

crossposted from random-thoughts:

I just realized that I have no idea what I'm supposed to wear for graduation. I'm kinda suprised it took me that long considering I've sorta been obsessing over anything graduation related. Haha.
Typically, isn't there a cap & gown kinda thing involved?  ...and you should probably wear
something underneath as well, but since no one can see it, does it matter what?
I don't know, I've never graduated...
Ben's mom said no long pants, and no flip flops, and no heels, and she suggested nothing white or yellow or light colored. That leaves me with pajama shorts, a dress-like Dale Jr. t-shirt, and pink rain boots. Baby is making me fat and all of my other clothes are uncomfortable, and I don't have any other shoes.

Any sensible advice from someone better qualified than I?

not to each single person, and almost all  the birthday threads have had persoanlized posts.

i know i have seen the one (two?) threads in honor of my birthday quite different than all the rest!

Revived.

Who is the Shadowboxer in the band called Bird Eats Baby? I haven't used twitter in a long time, but I've just started using it again and they've tweeted at me once or twice. I'm sure they're related to Amanda or the box in some way, but I can't remember how.

OK I NEED HELP.

I have not a lot of money - I'd say about £300, or pooooossibly up to £500 - and going to uni this year. I do not have a laptop. I feel I may need one. I'd actually really like a proper desktop computer, not a huge one but... a proper one ;) I don't know anything about computers, so I don't know what I can get or if I'm even kidding myself that I'd get anything any good, but...

Basically, like I said, I don't know a fucking thing about computers and need some help on what to get, etc.

Whatever you do, DON'T get a Compaq laptop or desktop.  Compaq fail at everything.
hm, i have a compaq laptop and it works perfectly, never had any issues with it. i used to have fujitsu desktops and there was always something wrong with them.
i've never had a toshiba or lg though, but what i've heard is all pretty good.

edit: by the way, i have the compaq presario cq71-310. it cost me a little less than £400. the newer version is a little over £400 i think.

What software do you want to run?
Consider also that if you have a desktop computer you'll also need a monitor (unless you buy a package deal but it's probably cheaper not to).

don't take the compaq insult personally.  i just had a few friends that all got compaq computers and they all broke within the year.  i've heard they're really slow, too.

i was skeptical about getting a toshiba, because i thought it was quite an old fashioned make (which it actually is) but my laptop's fantastic.  it's a bit bulkier than my old one, but she loads up really quickly and i've not had any problems with her at all.
i didn't even know lg did computers til we got one  :embarassed: but it's pretty good.
i didn't take it personally! i just thought i'd share my thoughts. i got my compaq in february, so i suppose a lot can still go wrong, but with the desktops that i've had, the issues started pretty much immediately. my compaq is pretty fast though. i don't really have any laptops to compare it to, but compared to my previous desktops, it's really fast.
haha i've only known about lg computers for a few months or so. first i thought they only made phones :P

oh and indja, do you know if you might need to take your laptop with you to uni or somewhere else? in my first year, i'll need to take my laptop with me to school regularly, which is the main reason why i didn't get a desktop. when i'm at home it's connected to a monitor and an external keyboard, so it feels like working with a desktop when i'm at home.

I have no problem at all with mixy-matchy. On thinking about it, I should be getting a big smelly payday at the end of this month - think like three months worth in one xD - so my budget might swell a fair bit. Then again, this is the prime season for Manchester vintage fairs, so it may in fact buckle and collapse entirely in the name of to-die-for skirts and monster-killer jackets ;)

...sorry, got distracted.

The stuff I'm going to be running is nothing too shmancy - internet, word documents, MSN and Skype, nothing else especially magnifico. Then again, I really, REALLY don't like having to buy new stuff - I'm not one of these to upgrade if I can help it - and I'd really like to do some music stuff on it later on, maybe some arty things as well. The main thing is that I tend to do everything at once (right now I'm streaming a video, on the Box, on MSN and Skype, downloading some stuff onto my MP3 player and typing a bunch of stuff up, though I don't think any of that takes up a big amount of... whatever it is that running things take up).

@Lucy - I don't think I'd need to take it with me - I fucking hate typing, I really only do it so people can read it, so if I'm making notes it'll be on paper. Same as if I'm revising or researching things - books, pen and paper ftw.

Also, OH MY GOD STOP ALL WRITING NEW REPLIES WHEN I'M TRYING TO WRITE A POST!! xD

@Johnny! - I'll be studying theology. I think apps means what I said already. But I dunno. What's an app? I thought an app was like one of those things that you use on other people's iPhones to make pictures of them look like they're fat.

iPhone calls the various little tricks it can learn "apps" because it has delusions of being a computer.
Darned handy, sure, but not real "applications" such as one uses to do things on one's real "computer"....

...and I belong to the bad-experiences-with-Compaq club.  We got one new many years ago, and it
never worked as well as the refurbished-antique machines we've had since.

We've had good luck with Dell machines.  Macs are good, of course, but they're absurdly expensive,
and if you're used to dealing with a PC, there's a learning curve.

On the app conversation, and the fact I've been watching "Castle" pretty literally all day, there was a jolly larks moment in one episode I watched today when a hardcore FBI lady took a photo of a fingerprint and sent it to the lab for analysis and the lovely Nostril King stares and goes, "...there's an app for that?!" Cracked me right up.

1) because the company has acquired other companies over the years that made those things and slapped the parent company name on 'em.

2) on one string or all strings? most likely it's a crappy fret job, but it could be neck bow.

this happens mostly when the string is a bit loose.  are they new strings or have they not been changed in a while?

brand new nylon ones. the buzz seems to have faded away mostly. I think it was just a string settling issue.

Only off-pissing part of that is that I want to be getting different strings soon  >:(

Also, does anyone know about/care about/have an opinion on the whole Worth vs. Aquila thing?

Well, not the Box itself, but the people who make the Box tick (or tick the Box ;) ) certainly do. And where would we be without them?? Or, indeed, us??

It would be cooler to give us helium though, then we could be witty and open-minded with funny voices to boot ;)

Shadowbox, how the HELL do you draw Nathan Fillion?? The man's proportions are purest devil-work (but the way they all fit together is purest angel-cum xD). I'm making a comic, or trying to, and I have the story and he's in it (there's a sad girl, rotten life, spends her time daydreaming instead and has an imaginary friend who is... Nathan Fillion - it's not as shit/stalkerish as it sounds though xD). Anyway, I can't draw him. At all. Srsly. HELP!

It depends what the blog will contain. I find the blogspot is more suited for more word oriented blogging, and tumblr for media blogging.

I watched an interview with Amanda recently where she said 4 or 5 songs on Yes,Virginia were written about the same guy and I'm 99% sure Backstabber was one of them. Buut I can't find the video now  :-\

Since Backstabber predates Amanda's actual association with Mr. Folds, unless it's a fan-protest
thing like Christopher Lydon, I think it unlikely she wrote it about him...  (Or they could have met
years before and just kept it a secret.)

That's what you say if you wrote it in deliberately vague terms about a specific person,

You'll need to ask someone more PC-savvy than I am, but I think it would
involve going in and adjusting your autoexec batch file.

I think it was while she was on tour with "The Danger Ensemble", Steven Mitchell Wright started calling her it first if my memory serves.

help me out here, 'Boxers:

While looking for something else entirely, I found a sealed package of some really good Euro dark chocolate. I must've been given to me as a gift, but damned if I can remember when.

The only English words on the wrapper are, "April 1996."

Do I dare?

Open it, and see if the chocolate has a white look to it, if it has, I'd throw it out. If it hasn't you might as well try... But my guess is that, after this long, it will look white...

As long as we have doors in our walls for the people we invite, there will be those
we don't want trying to get in, and no matter the locks & latches we install, some
will get in and need to be evicted by human means.

Still, better locks & latches will be welcome when they arrive.   :)

Dear Shadowbox,

Recommend me some pretty motherfucking good music artists. I don't want low quality indie shit, although I sometimes like it, that is not what I'm looking for at the moment. So please dear shadowbox, point me to some good Folk Rock or something heavy but still acoustic. I appreciate any recommendation.

THANK YOU! :D
