Back in the early 70's There was this band of freaks that made musical theatre. They were weird. They were wonderful. They eventually became quite a different band, and their older music gets overlooked by many younger people because they think of the later era cheese pop.
Peter Gabriel used to wear funny costumes and act out the storylines he was singing on stage. Phil played drums(quite well too),looked like a damn hippie with his long hair, overalls and sometimes even had a beard. Tony Banks barely moved, but played some cool sweeping mellotron chords and organ swells. Mike Rutherford was an amazing bass player, later to become their mediocre guitar player.
The most overlooked member, and the one who's absence marked the sharpest decline for Genesis(imo) in the later years is Steve Hackett. He had a very interesting way of playing the guitar, and his spectacles were pretty amazing too.
They wrote long songs, but every part seemed to essential to the feeling of the story unlike the bloated filler employed by many more popular "prog" bands at the time. Though I never thought of them as prog, because they served the song. It was all about the song and evoking moods and feeling.
It pisses me off that what they did in the later years makes me always have to say "the early stuff" every time I mention I like them. So many people don't even know that Peter used to sing for them and had a sort-of reverse Mohawk at one point.
