Wav is totally loseless... But heavy.
If you can use other format, and search for a non-destructive audio compression, you should try the FLAC format - nearly 45% of compression, for an excellent quality. And it's a free format ;) FLAC can be read by software such as Winamp 5.
For better compression in a destructive mode, use OGG vorbis - another free format, far much better than mp3 (better compression rate, and better quality)

It´s a shame the iPod touch doesn´t "read" .flac files, I know alot of people who would love it.

Quote from: Apple Store
Audio
  • Frequency response: 20Hz to 20,000Hz
  • Audio formats supported: AAC (16 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV

Don't know much about iPod, never had, never will have it. But I'm surprised to know that for this price, he can't be updated, or modified to read other formats. Didn't know. I think I'll keep my portable CD player (yeah, the "bigger-than-my-pocket one.)

I used to carry around my cd player with a "carpet" full of cd´s, I left it when I finally got my iPod touch like 4 or 5 months ago.

I don't remember if iPods will play WAVs. They won't play FLACs but they will play Apple Lossless (basically the same idea as FLACs). Do what I do: copy as FLACs and then create MP3s from the FLACs as desired.

Or you can use a real music player, and convert your iPod in a more usefull way....

This is JUST a suggestion... ;D

I just checked my ipod touch and i have 58 albums on it, and it only takes a couple of gbs.  just in case you were wondering.

they are high quality mp3s, though... not full files.  i like quantity over quality.  :)

30 CDs * 12 songs each * 4 minutes each * 50mb each = 72gb

I think that you need to do a little research. A cd can store just 700 MB of data all total. Note: I said ALL TOTAL, as in, fully loaded (80 minutes of audio). Considering that your average album uses between just over half to two-thirds of that capacity, 30 cds in uncompressed .wav format would more likely take up 15 GB or less.

It's not quite that simple. Data CDs use three (I think) layers of data correction. This makes it easier for data CDs to handle scratches and whatnot but that extra data does eat up space. Audio CDs, on the other hand, have two (I think) layers. With audio being ~10MB/min, a fully loaded 80 min. CD is pushing 800 MB.

That being said, the math above is wonky. Assuming one just does straight WAVs and assumes 50 min./CD, 30 CDs would be ~15 GB.

If you had thirty CDs with 12 songs which were each 50mb wavs, that would be 600mb per CD. That would be 18gb.

I totally fucked up my math, but I still stand by my opinion.

But you don't have to do WAVs. ALACs/FLACs would knock that down to ~10-12 GB and you gain metadata (artist, song title, etc.) to boot. For most people, that's still too much for their MP3 players but makes long-term storage easier.

I agree that .flacs are superior to .wavs, but I said what I said with the assumption that the intention was lossless files usable in iTunes.

I've chosen AIFF.

I didn't choose FLAC because Ipods don't play them.

I didn't choose WAV because I can't put the lyrics of the song on it.

I choose AIFF because I can put the lyrics of the song on it and I can sing a long.

plus... AIFF and WAV formats ARE THE SAME QUALITY, and they are NOT compressed formats.

Does FLAC is a compressed format?

Does FLAC is a compressed format?

FLAC is compressed but the compression type is different from MP3, M4A, etc. Think of it this way. You have two pieces of clay. Unfortunately, you must carry it in a box. You just happen to have two boxes. One is a bit smaller than the first piece, so you just squeeze the clay together until it fits in the box. The second box is much too small, though. So, you rip off pieces of the clay and throw them away, then squeeze the remaining clay together until it fits in the box.

The first box represents FLAC, i.e., you're not throwing anything away. The second box is MP3, i.e., you are throwing something away.

thank you, that's why flac files are bigger than mp3, i'll consider this format when ipods accept it.

iPods already accept Apple Lossless files, which are basically the same thing as FLACs. (Think of it as a different way of squeezing the clay into the box.) If you're using iTunes, go under "Preferences," then "General," then click the "Import Settings" box. Choose "Apple Lossless Encoder." Bam. You're ready to go.
