man, this will never happen in America.

*sing-song voice*Sarcasm makes the world go round!

well, that was a mix of sarcasm and serious.  really, in a country where even the politicians like watching kiddie pr0n, you really think the red necks are going to vote for the candidate (or allow that candidate) to take their fake-breasted, bleached blondes in skimpy bikinis away?  if not for life, if not for liberty, if not for equality...

...people would probably riot for porn.

They can try, but they can't take away my lolis.

Update - Trials of the bullshit filter are set to start before xmas. They are now saying that at least 10000 sites will be blacklisted - some containing perfectly legal, but what they have judged to be objectionable  material.

If you are an Aussie and you haven't written an email or a letter yet please do! Time is running out.

This group on Facebook also has some good information http://www.new.facebook.com/group.php?gid=40261545086&ref=mf

And here's a video of the Senator responsible for this bullshit dodging questions in the senate yesterday -

Censoring our internet is the lamest idea I've heard in a long time.

I can see how it might be beneficial to stop pedaphiles etc but if they want to look at that stuff badly enough they will find a way.  Besides, maybe the government should think about why there are pictures of children on the internet in the first place, as opposed to punishing all of us because of the very small minority who do the wrong thing.

And if they are saying that it's because children are seeing things that they shouldn't - that's ridiculous.  It's more about the overprotective mummies and daddies who want to stop their poor precious angels finding out about life.  If the parents don't want their kids to see the stuff, that's fine and thats their choice - put a filter on and stop them seeing it.  By the time they get to the age where they can figure out how to get rid of the filter (or get their mates to) they are old enough to see the stuff anyway.

It reminds me so much of the parents who winge about people saying the f word on tv after the watershed - why are the kids watching tv then anyway?  And if you don't like it change the channel.  It doesn't take a rocket-scientist to figure that out!

Oh yeh, and are they just censoring for porn etc, or are they censoring for language as well?  If so I hope all us Aussies can still get on The Box!

I just feel that once they start to control what we can and can't do it starts to become less like a democracy and more like Big Brother!  I mean, who controls what sites are inapproriate or controversial - uptight politicians?  Does that mean that any websites that disagree with government policies or try to speak out and make a statement about something will be censored as well?  Or that if this doesn't happen right away, that the potential is not there for it to be abused?  That's freedom of speech, which we supposedly have a right to in a democratic country.
