THERE WILL BE NO INTERMISSION. New Amanda Solo album!
« on: September 25, 2018, 03:55:05 PM »

Starting a topic on here to discuss the new solo album!  Patreon's Community section doesn't seem to get a lot of activity/ discussion happening with these things, or the posts/comments just get lost easily in mass of content.  Facebook just feels like an echo chamber...

I guess I was prompted to make this topic after Amanda posted on Patreon a photo of the list of the songs she's recording in the studio now.  It took me right back to WKAP era and all the hype/excitement that happened on the forum when Amanda was in the studio, all the photos, short video clips etc.  It got me excited about the new album and this forum's musings. (Hopefully, there will be more activity on here now, leading up to the new album)

So I wanted to start us off by talking about the recent tracklist.
Thoughts on the songs shes recording? re-recording? covering? Potential running order? Predictions?

I'm not sure if I can post it because it's for Patreons? Presumably, most ShadowBox members are patreons?  Let me know, and I can remove it!

Bigger On The Inside
Mother’s Confession
The Things About Things
Drowning In The Sound
Death Thing
Voicemail For Jill
Machette
The Ride
Look Mummy (No Hands cover?)
All The Things 1
All The Things 2
Judy Blume
Brick (Ben Folds Cover)
I Want You ( But I Don't Need You, Momus Cover?)

I'm guessing that Brick, I Want You and Look Mummy will be bonus covers, given their content and how they fit well into the current set lists of Amanda's recent gigs.  I also think that Look Mummy No Hands, sound similar to The Ride and will maybe drag the album down a bit.  I am glad these songs are getting recorded though and are finding a home to belong to.  I also remember Amanda saying this album would have 10 songs? That would dismiss the 3 covers, and if you count All The Things pt1, pt2 as one song? is it a song?

I am also curious with the pace of the album given its mostly ballads (long ones too).  I have been looking at the list for a while and haven't been able to predict a running track order, maybe The Ride being the closing track...

great post!

the tracklist from Patreon is unlikely to leak from here.

sadly, its unlikely you'll get a lot of replies here.

the reason for both, is that new accounts can't
be created right now on this forum.
team AFP is aware, but has other priorities.

Yeah, I'd figured these tracks were all going to be on the album, since the word "demo" was added onto their links on Bandcamp, YouTube, etc. Except, "demo" was also added onto Small Hands, Small Heart, but I think that one is a little less personal than these other ones, so not surprised it didn't make the cut (same with In Harm's Way).

I hope there's very little uke on the album - preferably not at all, since TTAT and BOTI are so much better on piano. That said, I hope it's not all just piano & vocals, as that will get a bit monotonous. I must say I'm a little disappointed there's almost no new material, but oh well. Intrigued by "All The Things Pts 1 & 2 - wth is that gonna be? Haha

Still really excited for this. Any ideas on its title yet? Probably not...

no idea about the title.

Amanda has social media-ed the last few days that at least two artists
have been in the studio to add special sound effects.

other than that, it seems its mostly piano & vocals.
THOUGH being Amanda, there could be a few surprises!

omg The Thing About Things sounds so good with uke, guitar, and those synths!

And really happy they're adding to The Ride's instrumentation. the demo she released a few months ago is nice, but pretty boring. the song definitely needed something else to give it life.

i hope Machete isn't too different. it's actually the most finished song she's released since starting the Patreon, and it sounds GREAT. i wouldn't even mind no changes at all . . but as long as the essence of it is in tact, i'll be happy :)

Amanda said at the Edinburgh gig, just before the intermission of the show, that a possible title could be There Will Be No Intermission.  Given the content of the album, its a fitting title as life has no intermissions...  And in the context of the gig, it was quite a light comic relief to have an intermission in the show as the new show has been very emotional.

I think BOTI should be left alone, there is so much significance in it being the first Patreon release and with Zoe Keating's hugging cello.  I've never heard a piano version of the song, but I'm curious...  I think BOTI just be left on the uke, with the album being piano ballad heavy I think the uke would have a nice rhythm to the pace of the album.  The passion, authenticity and sadness contrast so effectively with Amanda's constant yearning strumming on this little, unserious, instrument.

I prefer the piano versions of TTAT, I thought the uke versions were lacking.  There can be a lot more play with the piano too in that song, so looking forward to hearing it's reincarnation because I think it's a great song and with the addition of a few other instruments, I think it's gonna pop.  Not heard the clip with uke, guitar and synths, link?

I stumbled across these images from Nicholas Kahn's Instagram, whos doing the album art   https://www.instagram.com/kahnselesnick/.  Really enjoying these visuals and how theatrical they are.  I wonder how they are going to be used?  Tori Amos has done this in the past with The Beekeeper and Native Invader with having set outfits/props/backdrops to visually describe the songs in her cd booklets.  Do people care for cd booklets now? the images are really great so I doubt they would be reduced to that small quality, perhaps an art book?   what songs do we think the images are linked to?

i like that title - i'm totally here for it. for my own itunes collection, i'd been putting all the Patreon songs in an album called "The Thing About Things" with her book cover as the cover. think those both really capture the essence of the patreon. but the album doesn't need to be named after a song, of course

i agree on the piano version of TTAT. based on the insta snippet, it sounds like uke is still there, with some guitar. but i really hope there's some piano on it, too.

any idea which song?

(this URL likely has a short lifespan (i'm new to Instagram).
if anyone can add an absolute URL good "forever", please do!
i would also appreciate knowing how to find one.)

psssst.  There's a live recording of Death Thing Down on youtube,  I was tempted not to watch and save some of the new songs for the actual release...BUT I caved...

it's a real beaut.  the song has been sticking around me for the past few days, I'm really looking forward to hearing the studio version of it.  it's made me think that this could be the closing song with the opening lyric "I was trying to end on a pleasant note"?  I also enjoy the "Jai guru deva om" lyric nod at the end of the song.
