In my family, we are taught that the English are horrible people who will knock you down and take your potatoes. I am not joking. There is this ancestral anti-English RAGE passed down through my family. It is not healthy. My grandmother on my mom's side would not come to the wedding if I or my sister married an Englishman. Fortunately, after their generation it turns into a generic dislike of the English, and when you hit the generation that includes me, my sister, and our cousins, it's really more of a lack of understanding of why British accents are so special.
This has been an in-depth look at Kevin's family brought on by way too much bandying of language.
English rage is still pretty fierce in modern day Ireland. Don't know if anyone knows this, but during the Famine there was actually plenty of food, it was just that the English took it all, left the potatoes for us, but obviously they died, so no food for the Irish while there was plenty of food for the Planters. Apparently.
Also, the whole Troubles in the North thing, still pretty much an open wound. I live super close to the border so I know people that were involved etc.
