Favorite Christmas Songs
« on: December 13, 2008, 06:30:04 AM »

Well, first of all I searched if there was a topic like that but did not find and second yes I know this topic is so unbelievable uncreative. ;)

Still, I would like to know: What are your favorite Christmas songs? Traditional and Modern ones.

The reason is that every year I realise how many great christmas songs exist that I dont know about. Took me till this year to find the Springsteen Version of "Santa Clause is coming to town" and the Irish Classic "A fairytail of New York" by the Pogues.

So if you know great songs which you like to tell about, do it. :)

I adore We Three Kings. That one gets looked over so often.

My personal faves, for no particular reason, and in no particular order.....

Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses ("popular")
or Happy Christmas (War is Over) by John Lennon
and
O Holy Night (a bit more traditional)

(Oh, and anything on bagpipes... but that's not just Christmas...  but some X-mas songs work really well.)

I played that song for my piano class last year...

I think if I could only have three christmas songs...

{"Merry Christmas" (I don't want to fight tonight)- Ramones
{"A Christmas Duel"- The Hives & Cyndi Lauper
{"Nut Meg"- John Legend & Steven Colbert

Carol of the bells.

Recently I just added "Wizards in Winter" by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra to my fav. list:

Mostly anything by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

& Los peces en el río by Pandora:

Merry Christmas - The Ramones

The Night Santa Went Crazy - Weird Al

We have an unofficial ban on all religious Xmas songs in my house - memories of being a catholic schoolgirl singing in the choir at mass come back to haunt me whenever I hear them.

Carol of the Bells is probably my all-time favorite Christmas song just...well because. I spent a good portion of my childhood wondering what that song was called and was very pleased when I found out.

Other than that, I like most Christmas music. And the strange thing is, even though I'm not particularly religious I tend to lean towards the more spiritual songs, Silent Night, We Three Kings, etc. I just think most of them are really beautiful. And also, Judy Garland performing Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas; that song usually makes me cry, haha.

Within Temptation - Gothic Xmas. They gave it out as a free download back in 2001 and I still like it, haha. It's funny. Yay for bands being able to poke fun at themselves. (I won't go into what has become of this band since then.. ugh)

As for more mainstream Christmas music...

"Happy Xmas (War is Over)"

"Silent Night" (and the Irish Gaelic version, "Oíche Chiúin"  :love5:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch/v/Uy6ba_M6zww" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/watch/v/Uy6ba_M6zww</a>)

"Angels We Have Heard On High"

Sarah McLachlan's christmas album, Wintersong.

Mmyeah. :)

... Are you serious? The Silent Force? The Heart of Everything? As compared to Enter, The Dance, and Mother Earth?
They were so much better back in the day. A lot of people hated on Mother Earth when it came out, older fans, I only got into them around that time (though not because of the album, or Ice Queen) but I think it's a good album. The newer stuff, however? Meh. Mediocre at best. There's a couple of good songs, but overall, I don't think it's an improvement.
