Grams and Spellin's
« on: August 10, 2007, 05:45:07 PM »

I know this probably be likes a shortish threads. But I vaguesly recalls this poopin' up in the old Box and its'a been happenin' here too. (kinda like da who 2 bang thread?)
K.

Seriously, I understand people getting annoyed by seeing grammar errors and misspells. I had a friend who would get so irritated if someone said, "will you itch my back?" that her head would implode and I'd have to get the mop out and start all over.

I said this before, but scientific studies have shown that there is a particular area of the brain where spelling skills, in particular, are located. A lot of people we deem as precocious or highly intelligent can't spell worth a hoot. Intelligence and spelling are like a fish and a tricycle. Point made poorly, but made.

Less "proven" studies have been done on grammar because it's a more complicated task to set up in the first place. However, language itself is "fluid" and constantly undergoing changes. This is why, if you go to a reference section in the library or Borders, etc. --you'll find a ton of books on everything from how to write a resume to the most recent compilation of slang/euphemisms --and on and on it goes.

The story as to how and why the English language has become the "international language" is interesting in itself...pm me if you care enough. I'll tell you all about, "The Story of English."

In the above paragraph, you will see an e.g. of what I was taught was the proper way to utilize quotations. When I read many entries now--it would look more like this: ...about, "The Story of English."--OR. Even more common, it's been accepted that one-word quotes, such as-- my "blob" came over <<don't require a comma at all. Even MORE! (yay!) If "blob" comes at the end of a sentence, people don't write it as - "blob." They often write--"blob".

I'm pretty sure my use of quotations is correct. However, I've made flaws with apostrophes in my past frequently --when it had been a while since I'd written anything at all...

My Point & the Important Message: Since there are several people here who speak a foreign language, and since typo's and misspells and the use of commas to separate and "pause" and -again, on and on and on...(run-on intentional)

When addressing someone's error, perhaps we should try and do it in a polite way. If you feel inclined, please vent your most irritating grammar/spelling issues in this very thread. e.g. -I hate it when people use "e.g." for expediency when they could simply type out--"for example."

If you can think of no eruptions that surface on your skin when you encounter someone else's grammar/spelling mistake, then try and withhold executing a fellow Box member should you come across a mistake. Even better, point out what you see as the problem with tact.

Final NOTE OF IMPORTANCE: IF this all sounds boring, you could personalize this thread to a --"please stop misspelling "epistle" folks." Whatever.

And for shit's sake people, STOP starting your sentences with "AND!" And please stop typing in phrases. Instead of sentences!

even though sometimes it bothers me to see improper grammar or misspelled words on here, I really dont feel that a message board is a place where you must have proper grammar. I am the grammar police, as it seems many are, when it comes to life beyond the internet. But here, I dont see how it really matters. Its too casual. Yes, I DID start that last sentence with BUT! whatever. ;D

I love when people correct my spelling and grammar. Otherwise I don't learn.

Much respect to you for that. I don't correct some people when they make mistakes because I don't care if they make mistakes. If I respect you; I will correct you. Beginning a sentence with "but" or "and", although technically incorrect, can be a stylistic choice. You will find many examples of such in novels written by highly literate writers.

As far as the informality of a forum negating the need for proper grammar; I would concur if I believed, for even a moment, that most people knew better and were discarding the rules by choice. Communication suffers, no matter how subtly, in the wake of poor usage and grammar. In the eyes of some people, your credibility suffers when you do not observe the rules of language. The choice is yours.

but seriously. it's definitely. i can't stress the importance of this enough. everytime you spell it definately, God creates a war based on mass genocide.

I sahke my head in earnest every time someone uses the adverb then when they should be using the participle than. That's not spelling or grammar. That's improper usage. Than introduces the next item in a comparison.

Apples are louder than snakes.

Then means "next in time or order" or, in some cases, "therefore".

John went to the roof then peeled the wrapper from his CD

If Kimmie is going to wear that glove, then Walter should take a cab.

Those drive me nuts. >_<

I don't know if this counts, but when people don't type an entire word it bothers me. For example: "U r all crazy ppl! I love you tho!" Arrrgh.

Oh yes!! I cannot stand that half-assed-type-half-a-word shit either. That disturbs me greatly.

Agreed. I dont mean so much speaking correctly on the forum. I mean more in the form of puntuation and capitalization. I do believe that even in an informal place such as this forum, proper grammar and spelling is vital for accurate communication.

I'm sorry, but how is definately written correctly then?  :embarassed:

I'm fortunate enough to understand how most words are written correctly. One word that I remember writing miserably wrong was "with" which I used to write "whit", but then again I was 11 at the time, and had studied english for less than 2 years.

I have a theory, though. I'd say that people who don't speak english as first language, have struggled to learn the spelling and grammar are more prone to at least try to spell things correctly, or are more willing to correct their errors. Instead, people who are native speakers, might not care so much, and even feel it's their right to write as they wish, because it's "their" language.
