I have a band tattoo that I've had since I was 13.
It says "AFI" with a rose underneath of it.

Everyone told me not to get it but I did.
Everyone thinks its stupid, and I still don't.

I still love AFI...and I have since basically elementary school.Plus I got it more for what it meant to me than just it being my favorite band at the time...

Symbols are good. Likenesses have a huge potential to go wrong.

I'm sure a lot of you have seen this:

Be careful with likenesses, or anything not in profile.

I've been thinking about getting my first tattoo and have also been entertaining the thought of using something Dresden Dolls like.  I don't know, I'm kind of a tattoo chicken.  Think about it all the time and never do it.

GOD, that is absolutely terrible... I hadn't seen it before. It's cringeworthy... I don't think I'd ever get a portrait tattoo, but if I were to, it would have to be done by an artist I trusted wholeheartedly - say, Kat Von D. Her black and grey portraits are incredible.

Wow... That is absolutely stunning, I love the colour. Definitely the nicest Dolls tattoo I've seen. I'm so jealous!

Ahhh, you got it done! I really like it, it's seriously pretty. Are you happy with how it turned out? How painful was it....?

Hey I have a question. Does anyone have any good ideas for a tattoo that could incorporate the song 'Half Jack'...? More than just lyrics though, I was thinking an image of some sort... I seriously relate to that song, I'd really consider a tattoo that linked to it somehow.

One idea is to find an artist you are really happy with and impressed with and take the lyrics with you to see him/her. Explain that you want something to fit in with the song but not just lyrics and they'll draw some ideas up to see if they work for you. This works doubly well as you know the tattoo they will draw is well within their capabilities if they have orginially drawn it (it's harder to judge when they reproduce someone elses work) and with their eye for tattooing they know what works and looks well in that medium and what doesnt.

I have a bass clef on my right wrist and treble clef on my left wrist.
I'm hoping that i can meet Amanda at her london gig, and ask her to write "Just Sing" on a piece of paper so i can then get that tattooed underneath the treble n bass clef.  :)

Wrist to elbow would be a lovely spot, I vote wrist to elbow! I considered getting some writing there at one point. That will hurt like a bitch though, completely on bone and all....  :-\ But don't let that put you off, I think you should go for it! Are you sure you've spent long enough thinking about this though....?? You sound rather impulsive, lol  :icon_tongue:

Ooohh, Kat Von D but prettier? Well she must be sexyyy. Is she as good a tattooist? Where's she based? You're from London right...? I seem to remember you posting on the Electric Ballroom threads....

Yeah im thinking wrist to elbow.... just gotta decide for definite on the content. YES i am very impulsive - although i booked the tattoo in october but its recently ive started to think more about the content. ive had a couple of band-related tattoos and not regretted them so i guess this'll be ok too!

Nah im from Birmingham :) im travelling down for the gig! eek! my tattoo artist is also Birmingham-based. She freehanded the most incredible pair of eyes on the back of my neck - they're beautiful! i shall put a pic up. Inspired from the film 'Prey for rock and roll'

Retrospectively? It really wasn't that bad... the only part that was bad [and by 'bad' i mean 'a different kind of pain'] was the tendon that runs along the underside of your wrist... it felt like his tattoo gun/the needles got hotter. The tattoo itself... I dunno. Felt like someone rubbing a ballpoint pen on your skin super fast/hard. I have super skinny/bony wrists, so that probably didn't aid me any, haha...

I think that tattoos are different for each person. Personally, I wont get a tattoo that I haven't wanted for 3-5 years. Both of my tattoos are incredibly meaningful to me, but one of chinese writing and the other is a band tattoo. People tend to be rude about them, asking me if I even know what the writing means, etc. What they don't know is that my students in Hong Kong wrote it for me when I taught English there.....*sigh* The point is, don't judge other people's tattoos. And if you really want something, get it. No one else needs to understand it.

hah, i have the same issue with my tattoo on my side. it says "dance with me" in japanese. i always get the "are you sure that's what it says?"
YES. after i was out of high school i went back up there and spent some time with my old japanese teacher (who is also one of my favorites teachers ever and an incredibly inspiring person) and she wrote it out for me :). i'm going to have a good music loving friend of mine draw up music notes that i'll get swirling around it. i can't wait to get it finished.

It's so annoying X__X. People always act like I should regret my tattoos. Oh lawls, I wanted the Radiohead minotaurs for seven years. I wanted the chinese for.....four. So seriously. *sigh* Your tattoo sounds lovely!

this what what i have so far:
<a href="http://tinypic.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i44.tinypic.com/11rdiz5.jpg" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic">[/url]

i'm ridiculously excited to get it finished.

it's crossed my mind to start the notes with a slightly larger ampersand at the top as they swirl down... but i don't know.
