Jesus fuck, I'm not saying there's not a reason to be angry here. I just don't think this is an appropriate place to deal with it - the subject of stolen artwork is important and relevent to everyone, but a personal dispute between one individual and another is not, especially when it turns into a repetitive public attack on one of those individuals. As for "fuck the shadowbox happy family bullshit", I don't see why wanting one corner of the internet to resist the general trend of selfishness, abuse and of hiding behind the anonymity a screen-name and an avatar give you is so reprehensible. The main reason I come on the Box at all is because it's a respectful and considerate community. This discussion is neither of those things, and if objecting to that is "bullshit" then clearly something has gone very wrong here.

it's important for me to point out that in offering my professional opinion on this i'm not making a judgement on the validity of the subject matter, or on whether or not someone has the 'right' to use any design they want to.  quite the contrary in fact.  my commentary is as mechanical as i could keep it, and critique is something i also try to keep to a minimum regarding tattoos, especially here, because it is quite easy to offend someone over one's aesthetic opinion and have them take it personally, as a tattoo is essentially an irrevocable change to one's appearance, and to critique it you are suddenly critiquing a part of someone.

i will say that i don't understand the offense taken.  insofar as my experience as a visual artist goes, both in and out of the tattoo shop........this is par for the course.  i have had literally hundreds of original designs mocked, traced, and otherwise utilized for someone else's 'original idea' as well as stolen quite a few lines myself.  visual art is as layered as music, and as one knows, music is built off of past music almost all the time.

it might also be pertinent to mention that tattoos, once placed in skin, do not fall under the same constraints as even a tattoo design on paper, either legally or ethically.  while there is some sort of nod to ownership of designs in the tattoo world, it does not exist in the same capacity copying/tracing exist in other forms of reproduction.  as per the legal aspect of this reality, you can totally thank the disney corporation, of course, copyright nazis that they are.

tl;dr, i'm not really on a 'side' about this.  i'm just talking before i think, as usual.

@NU & Mockers - Damn right I'm pretty ;)

@Aggybum - I wasn't really responding to your post in particular, though I both read your post and wrote mine when I was pissed off, so I'm sorry if I was overly huffy. I just really would like to see this particular piece of conversation come to an end soon.

Can I play devils advocate and say the girl in this image is more attractive (but her tattoo is stupid)  ;D

Really hot girl, suitable for inappropriate thinking-about.

Indja, my dear friend.

One simply cannot compare these two utterly dissimilar items.

I'm saying good-bye to the cupcake tattoo for now. I'm really looking into the direction of an octopus. I thought about having an anchor incorporated in it, with the tentacles wrapping around it. I don't know just yet. I know I'd like it sometime this summer.

Also, I'd really like a pinup girl on my calve.

The reason why I havent said anything is because im in the process of moving house and havent been online in a while, however as i sit with my many boxes i would like to say a couple of things just to clarify.

I asked my tattoo artist for an image of a ballet dancer, with some kind of Gene Kelly singing in the rain twist, and dds lyrics incorporated into it - I compose music for dance, as well as other music things, and generally adore ballet which is why i wanted a tattoo like the one i have. I got this tattoo in 2010, although had been thinking about it for around 2 years. To my knowledge my tattooist hand drew a selection of images, then presented them to me, and I selected my favourite parts from each one - which were then drawn in a final design. I was not there when the images were being drawn as she did them on evenings in her home.

Looking at the images side by side i can see similarities, however i didnt approach the idea with an image or a sketch - just a brief image in my mind which I verbally described, as i cannot draw. The last time i went to an afp show was in 2009, and the 1st time was 2006 when the dds played a festival i was at - before this discussion I had NEVER seen Audrey's drawing, on a sticker, in a collection of Audrey's art, or online. I genuinely had no idea that this was anything like her work, and if i did i would have more than certainly asked permission beforehand!! In the past, for example, Sylvia drew a stag which I asked permission to take ideas from for a tattoo (although this still has not been designed), i would not steal any ones art and claim it is my own.

I wholeheartedly apologise for causing such a stir, and most importantly, for upsetting you Audrey - I had no idea that the tattoo i have is similar to your work, and certainly did not steal it and if i had directly used your work i would have asked your permission.

My concern is that a lot of the lines are completely identical.
But thanks for clearing it up.

I do believe this, and true I remember you asking about my drawing so it would only make sense that you'd ask again -I had completely forgotten about it. Maybe it's just a coincidence, I've had weird trippy things happen to me before, or maybe your tattooist had a look online and found Audrey's drawing - since as Ag pointed out, it's not that rare to ''get inspired'' on other people's work - and decided you might like it.... but yeah, that's really not your fault. xo
