I have 3 tattoo designs in mind that I have wanted FOREVER and only don't have due to lack of funds, but lately I just want to get EVERYTHING tattooed on me. I blame the meds I'm on right now because they've sort of made me stop giving a fuck about ANYTHING, but yeah, if I had more money, I'd probably be covered in shitty, half baked ideas right now.

This just pains me to look at.

The only thing is I would want it to be smaller but other than that, I can't find anything wrong with it.

well scale is something you can speak to your tattooist about ( i would also recommend letting them rework it a bit too as they are the experts)

it's not going to be a very detailed article, so just your personal experience, or an anecdote, anything would work, on whether getting a tattoo made you feel more confident, (or not), or made you feel as you belonged to a group, and why :)

I think tattoos and piercings are an aesthetic thing in the same sense as make up, clothes and new hair styles. People naturally feel more confident if they like their appearance, and body modifications are another way of bringing their appearance around to their personal taste. In terms of a sense of belonging, piercings and tattoos are part of the aesthetic associated with the deathrock subculture for example, which leads to ideas like this:

The best thing about tattoos in the modern day is that tattoo artists are artists first. Tattooing just happens to be one of the mediums they work in. Tattoos these days can be anything from marking an anniversary, a life-changing moment, or simply a piece of art that person wanted. Every single piece has a story. Most folks who have them can tell you what they were doing at the time/what their state of mind was/what was going on in their life at the time.

As for me, my two pieces are the first two parts of a 4 part tattoo reflecting the four elements. I have Earth (Dragon head) and Fire (Phoenix). My next two are going to be Air (Griffin) and water (Kraken), sleeving my legs from the knee down. The dragon piece came to me in a dream. My artist and I talked about it as I had, literally, nothing drawn. The end result, which involved three or four phone calls over the next two weeks, was as if she had gotten into my brain and drawn it exactly how I pictured it in my mind.

I got my tattoo (a rose) for a few reasons: 1, my name means "little rose" in Irish and 2, I knew this really great woman who was called Rose and she was one of the strongest people I've ever met, a true inspiration.

I have my lip pierced which is obviously very noticeable and I like it lots. I didn't get it cos I wanted to fit in, I guess I just wanted to form my own identity. My parents have been against it forever and they still are, but I didn't get it just to annoy them, I genuinely wanted it for years. And then when I could, I got it done. I want more piercings (tragus, septum and nipple being some of my choices and just cos I like them), and I have more tattoos in mind for when I can afford them. It's never been about fitting in though (for me, I can see how and why it would be for others). But like Amy said, it's as personal and expressive as the clothes you wear or the music you listen to.

...not sure if any of that is relevant.
