tattooed friends, i need your help! i'm writing an article for the blog i work for, mtv voices...this monthly issue is body image, so my piece will be on how tattoos (piercings, etc) can actually boost confidence in one's body image and also enhance a certain kind of belonging / fitting it feeling...
would love to have your opinion on the topic...it can also be very short, a couple of sentences... i'll obviously quote you...

I might be too late, but this is an interesting thing to think about anyway...
I grew up swearing up and down I would not get a tattoo. I thought about piercings, but tattoos seemed gaudy and trendy- a permanent suck up to society. I thought it was silly to forever mark yourself, whether it be something artistic or your lover's name.
Therefor, when I suddenly started to think about getting a tattoo, I didn't get one right away...suspicious of my own intentions. I also did not get one to fit in or stand out. Though I suppose in some ways I did make a statement with mine.
It says "I have a sense of humour and I laugh at myself, especially my knees"
After two years of having them, it is starting to sink in that they're there forever. I think it's because my early 20s have been a time of feeling immortal and yet that I will die by sunrise...and when I wake up one day and realize that I will probably be a grandmother who wears long shorts.
Sort of depressing, I suppose. But then again, I wont be the only grandmother with ink. I'll probably seem tame.
I think it was a way of proving I had follow through and the ability to do something entirely on my own...with the help of a trained professional, of course.
