This was posted in the old 'Box, but since I'm not sure if people will still be checking the old forum and I still need to put this project into play, I'm reposting.

As part of my Tailoring and Clothing Construction Independent Study next year, I have decided to design, draft and tailor two costumes. My goals are
-To learn to work directly with a female client, allow to communicate their wishes and incorporate them into the design;
-To learn techniques and further build upon my technical knowledge of clothing construction;
-To have a small portfolio of self-designed clothing suitable for college and work applications.

As a general premise for the photo shoots, I’d like to take the pictures in a busking situation (i.e., live statue in traditional pan face). So, here’s where you guys come in. I’d like to design/construct/sew two (lucky?) brigaders costumes.
Here are some requirements:
-Female living in the Northern Massachusetts/Southern New Hampshire area who is can make the trek to Portsmouth or somewhere thereabouts 2-3 times (and commit to a photo shoot, to be scheduled at a time and place of our general consensus)
-Willing to send full body shots, measurements etc. online to me
-Has an idea for a costume which they can either describe or sketch and send to me
-Will be willing to pay a smallish amount of money after the garment is finished if fabric is ridiculously expensive

The process
- I will sketch out a drawing of the costume as described/drawn
- I will assemble a mock, scale toile on my trusty American Girl Doll
- I will sew a muslin of the garment which must be tried on and fitted
- I will sew the finished garment which will be tried on and fitted
- We will complete a photo shoot. The “client” must fill out a bit of a “customer survey”

Sound good? Are you interested? Send brief descriptions/sketches of your idea via pm or to keb375 @ yahoo . com.

Thanks!

ETA: I now only need one brigader!

It's all a matter of planning... I try to make it to Boston every month or so... we'd just have to plan fittings around that. Which can be done, quite easily.

well then, I'd love to help you :-)

Sweet.

I finally gathered up some time to get back to the sewing machine... and it won't fucking work right.  I don't know how to fix/unjam a stupid sewing machine and I have about 80,000,000,000,034 unfinished projects and I am NOT happy.

Stupid New Jersey...

Long distance sewing does not normally go so well.

I once did an corset/garters set for a girl in Ontario, which sucked. I sewed the toile and sent it to her, she hat a friend help pin it etc., sent it back to me, I sewed the final garment, sent it to her, she had a friend help pin it again, then she sent it back to me... I did the final binding/finishing and all that and finally sent it back. She loved it, but it set her back quite a bit with the postage on top of the garment (first paid commission ever! busked sweet-heart neckline corset in black and white polka dots with red binding with a waist strip and 4" reduction).

I will search for pictures, but I think that was before I embraced digital photography, so the pictures are probably still on a roll of film. Somewhere.

What's wrong with your sewing machine? I hate it when machines get sick. Mine just had it's feed dogs replaced...

It just... keeps clogging up the thread for NO reason.  It didn't used to do that.  And now I'm having bobbin issues.

I have ideas, I have material, I have some patterns and shit (because as much as I'd love to just make stuff without patterns, I'm soooo not on that level)... but I DON'T have a functioning sewing machine!  I want pretty home made thingsssssssssssss.  I'm so frustrated I want to cryyyyy.

Check your tension! If it's really loose, it makes my machine clog up. Sometimes my machine also does well with having some compressed air (like you use to clean keyboards and stuff) sprayed into the bobbin area etc.

Yeah, I already checked the tension.  That was my problem once before.

Just for entertainment, sketches for roxma's costume. (except, most of them are just me being weird and trying to use up the entire page of models...) She wants either an outfit of a vestal-virgin-esque (pictures 1&2) or a black corset with blue skirt and black accents (or the other way around)(picture 3)... there's a reason I don't draw, really.

You'd only have to get to Portsmouth twice. And I'd feed you a picnic in the commons and read you poetry (okay, maybe not the poetry, although I am known to spout off random verses at certain points...)
