New/Upcoming Movies!
« on: January 10, 2009, 04:00:31 PM »

[okay, I thought there might be an old thread wasting away somewhere, but I searched and didn't find it, so if there is one, it's too old for me to care...]

So a couple of us over in "Movies You Love..." noticed a couple of upcoming releases that look
very promising [see below] and we though it better not to derail that thread.

Post here, if you would, upcoming motion pictures that you think will be great, or will be good,
or that you think will actually be kinda dumb, but your favourite hot Canadian actress is in them...  :laughing7:

Discuss the films other people have posted, link to imdb, embed trailers...
Entertain our community, and provide essentially-free publicity for Hollywood, Bollywood, and
indie filmmakers everywhere...

What's this?  A stop-motion animated bit in 3-D?  How intriguing....

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/oSBoBnYpBVY" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/oSBoBnYpBVY</a>
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/ibl1iKiiwjo" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/ibl1iKiiwjo</a>

also promising (and I'd heard nothing of it before):

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/JIpZxBczWUg&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/JIpZxBczWUg&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1</a>

(Yes, Star Trek has its own thread...  May it live long and prosper.)

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

This could either be the greatest or the worst Terry Gilliam film ever.

looks way more intriguing to me than coraline.

BOOYA! that one was mine. I know I'm good. :P

another one I have heard of is The Memory Keeper's Daughter. A novel by I-forget-the-name-mainly-because-i- haven't-read-it-yet.... I lent it to my sister quite recently and she loved it and I was planning on reading it next (although I tend to change my mind easily... I also had World War Z in mind.... but this is for the books thread) Anyway I hope I'll read the book first..... I can't fucking keep up with them. THOSE BASTARDS.

Another movie I am excited for is Dead Like Me. I loved the show and own both seasons but I hate that they canceled it. It seems they might actually sum it all up in a single movie... depressing really I would have much rather seen another 3 seasons of it. Beggers can't be choosers right?

Waitaminnit....

So...  They're making a Dead Like Me movie, but it's a direct-to-TV movie?
What a rip...

After careful consideration, this is actually better.  I'm not sure DLM is big-screen material.

Coraline should be rather good as Mr Gaiman has been heavily involvbed with its creation, and is extremely happy with it

I am totally excited about Dead Like Me!!!  I loved that show...

Coraline was amazing in 3-d will probably go see it again. I haven't read the book yet, but will be getting it soon.
I think there was some questionable content for a PG flick though

Mmmmm, I have forced my roommate to read the book (and I know she will like it, because it's an interesting, and cohesive story), and I will fucking PAY for us to watch it when it comes out.  I'm thinking about paying for us to see Coraline.  Part of me wanted to do it as a treat to the kids...but after having $285 taken from me...nah.  I gave this house the gift of electricity until the 24th.  That's quite enough.

I was about to mention Watchmen! I think there are going to be so many flaws (apparently the side characters aren't in it as much which, for those of us who have read the book, makes what happened at the end not as effective. Seriously, I sat there for like a five minutes staring at the book in horror. They also apparently changed the ending and Veidt's line of "I did it thirty five minutes ago" but they might have changed it back) but I still think it's going to be amazing.

Love the comic. Alan Moore refused to sign off on the movie, he believed it couldn't be made into a film. He's pretty much right, but they can do a decent adaptation.

I'm going in hoping for something authentic, but not expecting too much. There are too many lines in the comic that would come across cheesy if not done absolutely perfectly, and too many scenes that use the comic medium that can't be reproduced in film. Plus, the "intermission" parts (the blocks of text written by various characters) can't be done, neither can the comic within the comic.

A lot of the timing can't be done...or at least I doubt it can. I guess it could by a master. For example, early on, the fight scene in the ally with Laurie and Dan, there's no dialogue, but the dialogue from the other scene is intermitently placed over thier scene, describing two things at once essentially. That'll be really difficult to pull off with film without seeming ADD. In a comic you can read and watch at will, in film they essentially have to move at the speed of the dialogue.

From the previews, it looks like he compensated for this with the super slow mo stuff, which could work great. Some of the stuff I've seen is chilling in how authentic it is. Like this:

Awesome.

So we'll see. If it does get pulled off, it'll be a masterpiece, just like the novel.

Well said. That's pretty much how i feel about it too.

I really hope they don't fuck it up. Alan Moore wont like it no matter what he's yet to like any of the movies based off his books, V for Vendetta was really good, and The League of Extraordinary Gentleman wasn't bad, some of the acting was awful and they kind of had to change a lot of stuff from the book in order to get any one to watch it.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned Dragonball yet?!

kidding.

NO FECKING WAY. I am excited.

NO FUCKING-DUCKING-TRUCKING-BUMPING WAY!

That dude does not look like Goku, at all, & Piccolo? come the fuck on.

I am excited to see this but I know I will be disappointed; most of this movie was apparently recorded around my University.

Master Roshi was a hell of allot older than that when Bulma was in any fighting state...when has Bulma been a fighter?
I just hope Oolong and Puar don't make any appearances, that would be painfull.

I'm excited for Krabat! It's a German movie and I've yet to find a DVD release with english subs (.. my German isn't anywhere near good enough to understand a whole movie) but it's an adaptation of one of my favorite children's books, so it should be amazing! It seems like it's just as creepy as the book. I like creepy. :love5:

Quote
"The Thirty Years´ War has brought much death and destruction to central Europe, and has left 14-year-old Krabat an orphan. Lost and devastated, Krabat’s keen survival instincts lead him to a remote valley, where he finds a mysterious mill run by an ominous figure known as the Master. The lure of safe haven, hot meals and an apprenticeship under the Master is hard to resist... But gradually Krabat uncovers a horrifying secret: the mill is in fact a school of black magic and the Master is in league with satanic powers. While Krabat and his young colleagues revel in the teachings of the Master, they realize there is a price to pay: complete submission to the Master and even death. After Krabat witnesses Tonda, his closest friend at the Mill, perish at the Master’s hands, the fire of rebellion starts raging within the young boy. He realizes that the only way out is to defeat the Master in a duel. In the face of such adversity, Krabat is able to find strength through the lovely Kantorka. Armed with nothing but courage and their united love, together the young couple brave the Master and the arsenal of magical powers that make him nearly invincible. But can the power of love alone be enough to eradicate the power of black magic?"

Promethea. Pure brilliance. It's referenced in Watchmen too, first time I caught it was last night. I need to transcribe his opening lines in the Watchmen script (comic book script...part of it's included in the Absolute Watchmen). It's something about veins pumping through his pen, ink flowing through his hands, I can't do it justice, but it's awesome.

this is the other movie I am so excited about, Gambit is the coolest.  also I just finished the Watchmen....and that is so fucked up, I think Alan Moore is unable to write any thing happy, and he's probably one of the most misanthropic men in world. But that comic was so good.

Both are fine actors (DDL demonstrating substantially more range than PSH, all of whose characters
are well... PSH characters, even when they're basically accurate historical representations).

Neither has demonstrated the ability to play as wide a range of characters well, or to sing
the lead in a serious Broadway musical.

When Danny Boy does a turn as a comic-book hero with a straight face, I'll reconsider...
(Any such discussion, of course, carries the IMHO tag, even if the highly-paid celebrity commentator on the Oscar-preview show refuses to admit it.)

I think Hoffman has a great range - I mean Capote compared to The Savages - c'mon. And as for the both of them they're both serious actors, I can't see them wanting to do a musical. Not that I've got anything again musicals, not sure either of them can sing, but I certainly think they have the range to do comedy drama etc. I mean let's be honest Daniel Day Lewis is far too serious an actor to play a comic book hero, he plays real people, you know he never drops character the entire duration of making any given film, in My Left Foot apparently people carried him / wheeled him around for the entire shoot. I'm an actor myself so I guess I'm coming at it from a standpoint of what I see as difficulty and accuracy of the portrayal, but that is just MY opinion also.

It was actually really good! I decided to drop all of my nerdiness and complaints that it wasn't gonna be as good as the book (because of course it won't) and just decided to enjoy it, and I did! It had me in tears in bits, I thought the ending change was pretty respectful and it kept two of my favourite bits in (John's speech to Laurie when they're on Mars and Veidt's "I did it thirty five minutes ago").

I don't whether it was a good movie or not. It seemed okay, nothing majorly special. I loved the effects. There was an overly long sex scene. I never want to see the guy who played Dan's naked butt ever again.

People brought children, if you'd believe it. One was six or seven. :( And it is very, very violent. But yeah, I really enjoyed it.

there were a lot of children in the theater with us. i think it was a little too much for little kids. that might just be me, though.

In Australia it's MA15, which means you can't go if you're under 15 unless you have a guardian. Given all the fuss Australia usually kicks up about this stuff, like banning the Grand Theft Auto games and censoring the crap out of others like them, I'm surprised this got away with what it did. Thing is, people see the DC logo and the poster with them just standing there and assume it's gonna be fun times for all.

my friend was mad that they didn't check our ID cards. they had security guards checking them at the door to the theater and they didn't check any of ours.

all it did to me was make me feel old, lol.

I saw Watchmen yesterday, it was not as good as I'd hope, but not as bad as I was worried it would be. I liked it a lot up until the end, it just seemed stupid and pointless to change the end after they had followed the rest of the story almost word for word. all the characters were well cast, even if silk spectra 2 who was not a great actor still looked like she should.

I just borrowed the graphic novel from my friend in hopes that I could read it before seeing it, but I'm going to take my brother to see it this week for his birthday, and with all of my homework I doubt I'll finish reading it before I see it.  :-\

Bumpety bumpety bump....

This could be interesting...
Quote
The graphic novel mixes Western and science fiction genres. Set in 1800s Arizona,
a skirmish between cowboys and Apaches is interrupted by the crash landing of a
space ship. The alien commander plans to tame the Old West and enslave everyone,
but the cowboys and Native Americans turn their six-guns against the alien invaders.

Oddly, there's no sign of Joss Whedon....

The Losers has given me hope for the upcoming Captain America movie.  I'm not remarkably fond of Cap, outside of the Civil War storyline, but Chris Evans is a funny motherfucker.  Hopefully that'll shine through and Cap won't be as preachy as he tends to be in most incarnations.

Fer real?  I didn't think you were anything like that old...

Tom Sawyer came on the radio in the car a few minutes ago, and I remember
thinking it's held up pretty well for a 30-year old over-radio-played song...

Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire (who strangely enough used to write for a playhouse I acted at in high school) adapted his play Rabbit Hole for the screen and it's being directed by none other than John Cameron Mitchell!  :headbang: Dream come true? I think so.

It's crap! very little screen time is given to the "centipede" & when it's on screen it just lays down doing nothing.
Martyrs was a brilliant movie, this isn't.
