Delete 10 Facebook Friends, Get a Free Whopper

Facebook's developer platform has been used for a zillion marketing campaigns so far, but this one is actually dead-on hilarious.

Fast-food chain Burger King has created "Whopper Sacrifice," a Facebook app that will give you a coupon for a free hamburger if you delete 10 people from your friends list.

Burger King has put out some interesting campaigns as of late ("Whopper Virgin," "Subservient Chicken"), but this one caught our interest because of how gleefully it pokes fun at our social-networking obsessions. "Now is the time to put your fair-weather Web friendships to the test," the Whopper Sacrifice site explains. "Install Whopper Sacrifice on your Facebook profile, and we'll reward you with a free flame-broiled Whopper when you sacrifice ten of your friends."

The funniest part: The "sacrifices" show up in your activity feed. So it'll say, for example, "Caroline sacrificed Josh Lowensohn for a free Whopper." Unfortunately, you can't delete your whole friends list and eat free (however unhealthily) for a week. The promotion is limited to one coupon per Facebook account.

My Facebook friends had better appreciate the fact that I made a New Year's resolution to cut out red meat. Hint, hint.

We should start a pool:  How long before someone is murdered or commits suicide over
this, causing BK to [attempt to] hastily shove the whole thing back in a closet...

The idea is fine, since a lot of people have loaded their socoal networking pages with people
with whom they have no actual connection, but a lot of other people (somehow, I'm thinking
most of 'em teenagers) will "sacrifice" people they actually know for a laugh...

Feeling will be hurt, people will over-react, there will be drama...  Someone will die.   :angry7:

I call February 2. (The actual death; the investigation, finger-pointing, and program cancellation will take longer.)

There are a few acquaintances I'd definitely consider sacrificing for a Whopper...

I suppose there's nothing to stop people adding each other again afterwards though, is there...? I'm hungry, perhaps I'm thinking this through too much...

I made a facebook account a couple years ago, but never added any friends.  So, if ten people want to sacrfice themselves for a whopper, I'd graciously accept your gift.

I like them. the only problem is that they are cooked on the same grill as the meat, so it kind of make the whole thing pointless unless you just eat them for the taste, or those who just are trying to not eat factory farm meat.

news flash:  they're not cooked on the broiler. they're microwaved. any fear about sharing the meat grill can be left behind.

it says in the BK manuals that the only thing to enter the broiler is whopper patties and tendergrill chicken patties.

The veggie burgers are pointless for most people, because they contain milk and eggs. So not vegan, and only for veggies who eat eggs.

Also, if you're trying to cut down on red meat, obviously you're trying to be healthy... So perhaps you should avoid fast food?

Also also, those angry whoppers suck. The only spicy part is the peppers, and that's nuthin. The rest is too sweet.
I do love onion rings though. <3

i always took out my frustrations on the spicy food. when those firecracker tendercrisps came out, i used to smother those things with the spicy sauce as a subtle protest to my current station in life. i guess it's good i'm gone because i don't even know how many jalapenos i would have thrown on those angry whoppers.

Exactly. Eggs are animals, it's like saying eating an aborted fetus isn't eating a human. If you're going vegetarian for purposes of saving animals, I don't think dairy should be consumed either, haha. No milk or cheese for you!

I'm vegetarian because I don't like meat - couldn't care less about the animals. Am I still allowed the tasty tasty fetuses?

I'm not the rule maker, haha. I just think those who are in it for the animals should just go all vegan. But I guess half way saving the animals is alright too >.>

IT'S NOT GONNA SAVE THE FUCKING ANIMALS!!!

Gah. They'll still be raised in captivity, they'll still be killed, they'll still get all munched up. It's what they're for - it's what they're bred for. I hate it when other veggies harp on about how it's cruel and unnecessary - it's fucking nature, alright? What's cruel and unnecessary is some of the ways the animals are farmed, which can be easily solved by buying free range, happy-pig meat. I think the only thing I object to about meat-eating is that so much of the animal gets wasted - if you do choose to eat dead stuff, at least eat all of it, 'kay?
