Dresden Dolls Computer Games - Help Wanted
« on: August 15, 2007, 08:29:13 PM »

Hi,

About a year ago I proposed in a similar thread to develop a Dresden Dolls computer game and then release it under open source. There was a lot of interest and offers of artistic aid from other Shadowboxers, but I had to shelve the project due to my work commitments at the time and nothing came of it.

Well, I decided to return to it this month and release some games of different complexity (as my games development skills improve). My first game to be developed in C# (the language I use at work) and released in September will be a simple Dresden Dolls-inspired "space invaders"-style game (something quick, easy and fun). The next one will be a short 3D game written in C++ (the language I'm most eager to learn) to be released at around Christmas. Other ideas, please put them forward to the board.

The help I would like for Dresden Dolls Space Invaders is an attractive intro-splash screen (640 x 480 ideally) and a set of icons/sprites corresponding to the Amanda and Brian themselves, bullets/rockets etc. and bad guys (which I shall leave to your imagination). These will be included as characters in the game, and credits listed at the end. If any of you could design a set of icons, it would be a great help to me!

For this to work the icons must be bitmaps only 40 x 40 in size, with a jet black (Hex 000000) background and no more than 256 colours. You can do this in Paint, GIMP or Photoshop. Remember that a good contrast of colours is necessary for it to show up on a black background.

Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated. After testing and release, the games and source code will be either downloadable freely as open source or submitted to the Dolls themselves so that no-one can profit financially from it.

the main ship in the space invaders should be something like a heartplane?
targets could be the crappier things in the world and they get blasted by punk cabaret.
each one blows up to a different sample of an instrument. drum accordion piano cello etc
more you ashoot the more music u make?

Interesting.... I like the musical sample idea, although it may not be shared by everyone (I'll include an option to switch it off anyway).

More ideas and sprites/icons please!....

Put backstabber as the music if you can... and then perhaps use panic- to make a link to the backstabber video...

No, it shouldn't be sold, especially if a number of Shadowboxers are doing it. That would be against the spirit of punk cabaret!

Besides, part of the reason I'm doing it is just to get my fingers stuck in software development again, something I do very little of these days in my job. I'll get my just rewards in the second game when I can add C++ to my CV!

Better be Mac compatible... otherwise Amanda (or myself) can't play it!

In that case, I might as well do a cross-platform one in Java then. Not having a Mac or a copy of Mac OS, I won't have the means to test it!

If you know javascript you know actionscript. They're like Swedish and Danish - mutually intelligible, both being based on the ECMAScript standard.

For a project like this Flash is the only way to go. C++ is overkill...its not Half-Life 3

It's ok, I'm not using C++ for a simple game. I'm saving that for doing the 3D game development and DirectX. It is important for me to learn C++ anyway as if I add it to my CV and find some way of using it commercially then it improves my prospects quite a bit.

As for actionscript, I know very little about it but will learn it at some point. It's actually more sophisticated than javascript, being object-oriented. It's similar to another language I know a bit of, Java.

Journey Escape, on the Atari 2600. Basically, you play the part of the band Journey, trying to escape love-crazed groupies (that's what one of the enemies is actually called) and other people while flying in the ship that Journey had on the cover of their album Escape. I'm pretty sure that my parents still have a copy somewhere. Now, all I need is a 2600 to play it, because my father tossed out our unit a while back.
