Well I'm tempted to start by asking people about their thoughts on 4e...

4e is gay. I don't care how offensive it is to say that. 4e is gay.

3.5 is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better.

Oh no, you're one of them! 3.5 is clunky and unbalanced. Incidentally, what do you tend to play?

YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!

What is this we're talking of?  I'm totally the type to just jump into a game, regardless of editions, as long as the campaign is awesome enough.  Wait, we're still talking tabletop yes?

Talking about 4e and 3.5. A lot of people complained when the new edition was brought out, but the same happened when they switched from 2e to 3e.

I remember the original AD&D box set
any rpg is only as strong as the storyteller/dungeonmaster etc
also kill all power gamers nice and early.... a twisted Games Master knows how to use plot to make all of those dice players start enjoying the story

You remember that guy...  probably 20 years ago, went to gen-con and similar events and
routinely wiped out massively powerful parties of adventurers with a den of kobolds?  He didn't
"cheat" or anything, he just played the little bastards "realistically"...   Like, why would they dig
their tunnels high enough for a 6' human warrior to stand upright when they're only about 4' high?

Anyway, when I was in about 5th grade, I had the basic boxed set (the 8.5 x 11), the ORIGINAL
boxed set, and the Chainmail boxed set.  I bet those'd be worth money now...

Somewhere around here, I'm pretty sure I still have Deities & Demigods...

That is, the hardcover book that was re-released as Legends & Lore but without
the copyrighted fictional characters (Elric & co. and assorted Newhon figures).

4e is incredibly lame because it prevents you from moulding your character in the way you want. It has reduced the number of alignments from 9 to 6, it has cut back on skills and feats, pretty much done away with spells (making the wizard class insufferable), and all but done away with the concept of epic levels but making characters fade into agnosia upon reaching lvl. 30.

3.5e is good as long as you're committed; D&D was intended to be a game that people actually put a little time and effort into, not something you just start playing on a rainy day when you're bored.

D&D along with most role playing games has been condemned (several times over the years) as being a route to insanity and godlessness, ultimately leading to suicide, murder, rape, and devil worship

Epic level in 3.5 sucked. Wizards were ludicrously broken in 3.5, and now they're balanced along with the other classes. And I prefer the 5 alignments 4e has. The 9 alignments didn't make any sense.

That's not how I saw it. And someone else in my group saw it differently. That was the issue: everyone had a different opinion on the alignments.

I haven't had a chance to really check out 4e yet, so I won't necessarily condemn it... But I love 3.5. It suited me and the campaigns I was in veeery niiicely. <3
I'm pretty much always an elf, and usually a druid. Although I love playing rogues, too.
And this is another reason I love WoW, because it's pretty much DnD except without the hassle of finding a campaign. Although you don't really get a chance to really build a character for yourself, which is something I miss.

I'd say borrow a copy of the DM Guide and the Players Handbook of both editions, and decide which one you prefer for yourself.
Or ask around, find the group you want to play with, and see which one they prefer. Because if you go out and buy all the 4e books, then find out they all want to play 3.5e, you'll be full of sad. D:

I strongly suggest 3.5, but I can't make you pick anything.

As for our discussion, Alyss, you strike me as a very objective player -  a numbers guy, as we call them. I think 3.5 rules are better suited for people who offer a more subject viewpoint on the rules. Of course, I may be misinterpreting...

How do you mean?

4.0 rules are generally easier to deal with, but I think that some of their qualities sap away from the true fun of the game because, instead of making it a roleplaying game where characters are developed in detail by their players, the game is turned into an inflexible template--a formula with variable values for x and y and nothing else. While this makes it easier to manage, given that the characters are now more similarly managed, I think that eliminates the very, shall we say, "user-created" aspect of gameplay which I think gives the game its charm.

I guess that sums up my qualms with it. Maybe that style of gameplay works for people, but I'd much rather have complex rules than simple ones.

I've never played 3.0. I pretty much heard that it was similar to 3.5, except with a couple of possible inconsistencies.

3 was a mess. 3.5 has it's problems, but 3 was much worse, a really clunky system.

well the rangers were waaaay to powerful, and druids had like 50 week pets, instead of one powerful pet.

idk, I just thought it worked well enough granted I wasn't DMing but, it was easy to follow. and it was what I strated out playing so it has that. idk I have not played 3.5 a lot, and am yet to try 4.0, so maybe I am just bein stupid.

I love D&D. Played a rogue in 3.5 but I absolutely love 4 so much more.

Playing a ranger now. Pew Pew.

And I do play WoW. Sadly.  :violent1:

ah i love 4e! its pretty awesome. warlords  ;D god i just love making people hit stuff, and some moves are just ridiculous lol.

although i can see why some people prefer 3.5, the spells seemed a little more loose. like clerics with umm.. comand i think? well you could pretty much make someone do whatever and now it like just makes them fall over or something i think..

but yeah i only started playing late last year when some friends got me into it, and soon im going to be dming my first game :D im very exited! im writing the story myslef, and theres gunna be super powers!

Due to natures beyond our control we've lost our gamers. I am going through D&D withdrawl.  Every Sunday night it was wonderful to kick back and play until the wee hours. . .

How can I go about finding some new players? Hubby is a bit of a laid back DM but we don't want to just post on like Craigslist for a bunch of psychos to come into our home (or worse fundies who are going to tell us we're going to hell for gaming!).

Any ideas?

Do you have a local gaming store? I'd put up signs there, and meet with the prospective group first before inviting them into your home. It seems safer than posting on CL.

Yes hubby knows where the gaming store is but doesn't want to just go out and talk to perfect strangers. LOL. I cannot imagine playing online - for me it is not the same and I'd run the risk of never getting offline - lol.

I had suggested once that I set up a chat to get all our old gamers from back home so we could game and he refused. LOL.

It's a mixed experience. I game online at http://z9.invisionfree.com/Travellers_Respite with people I've now known for over a year, but it can be weird with strangers. Plothook is good as well.

I think that is really the BEST way. . . very few rules and lots more creative fun.

I had one DM who used to make us fill in these stupid bubbles every time we did a spell. And if there was a casting time we sat out for those number of rounds. It kinda sucked. The way hubby DMs is as long as we don't abuse a spell we don't have to count it - and all spells are instant and we don't need spell components. The only real house rule we have is BLAH and Say What You Mean.
