But alignment had a big impact on the mechanics too. And it got messy, a lot of the time.

I haven't had a chance to really check out 4e yet, so I won't necessarily condemn it... But I love 3.5. It suited me and the campaigns I was in veeery niiicely. <3
I'm pretty much always an elf, and usually a druid. Although I love playing rogues, too.
And this is another reason I love WoW, because it's pretty much DnD except without the hassle of finding a campaign. Although you don't really get a chance to really build a character for yourself, which is something I miss.

I really liked 3.5 at the time. But now that I've tasted 4e, I'm never going back.

That's it, I'm worshipping Stan.

And since there is a Great Debate over editions, somebody suggestion which edition I should buy.  Within the next month or so, I'm going to start a campaign here.  =D

I'd say borrow a copy of the DM Guide and the Players Handbook of both editions, and decide which one you prefer for yourself.
Or ask around, find the group you want to play with, and see which one they prefer. Because if you go out and buy all the 4e books, then find out they all want to play 3.5e, you'll be full of sad. D:

just go for the rules system that you find best suits your style...
personally I preferred other sytems to the AD&D system because of my love of role play rather than roll play

Bah, you get what you put in. RPing in D&D is no worse than in WoD. The other forum I hang around on is an rping site where we mostly play D&D. Been going for a year, all the same campaign and setting.

I strongly suggest 3.5, but I can't make you pick anything.

As for our discussion, Alyss, you strike me as a very objective player -  a numbers guy, as we call them. I think 3.5 rules are better suited for people who offer a more subject viewpoint on the rules. Of course, I may be misinterpreting...

How do you mean?

4.0 rules are generally easier to deal with, but I think that some of their qualities sap away from the true fun of the game because, instead of making it a roleplaying game where characters are developed in detail by their players, the game is turned into an inflexible template--a formula with variable values for x and y and nothing else. While this makes it easier to manage, given that the characters are now more similarly managed, I think that eliminates the very, shall we say, "user-created" aspect of gameplay which I think gives the game its charm.

I guess that sums up my qualms with it. Maybe that style of gameplay works for people, but I'd much rather have complex rules than simple ones.
