Heartplane Messenger Bag
« on: August 17, 2007, 10:23:58 PM »

It's a messenger bag! With the heart/plane/arrow/pen logo on it!

Sorry for the lack of photos- normally I take about a billion, but the light was kind of gross. And I need to iron the bag and clip threads. I know.

A gift for a friend leaving for private school soon... I started this bag about two hours ago and just finished it (I thought her party was next week, but it's tomorrow!)

Tech Specs:
Made of heavy-weight natural-colored duck canvas interfaced and lined in polka-dotted cotton, the "Octavia" messenger bag is approximately 13x10". She has a four inch gusset and a 22" strap, perfect for a person of shorter stature to comfortably swing over their shoulder and have rest next to their waist... She has one exterior pocket on the back and an interior divider as well as a zippered pocket under the flap, perfect for the storage of music players and keys.

I know you can do printing and silk screening stuff. a lot of the art students at mah school do it to all their clothes and accesories. I ask where they bought them, but like always they say they made it. or at least the logo/design part.

I do appliqués... I don't like the way screenprints look. The heartplane is wonder-undered on, and then slip stitched (so the appliqué won't peel off).

ahhh I see now. I'm pretending like I understand but I don't so I'll just research it to save you some time instead of explaining it to me. sorry.

In layman (oh, how I hate that word!) terms, appliqué is a fancy French word which means "fabric stuck to other fabric".

So, the heartplane logo is actually fabric (the lining), ironed onto a medium which lets it stick to fabric and then stitched so that it will stay in place.

See? Simple.

I've just started another one (this time in black, with a houndstooth lining) for the Post-War Trade thing. But it'll be different measurements, I think.

And different pockets. Probably more of them. Because I have mastered the use of a zipper.

She was very much enamored with it, and ecstatic that the strap was short enough that it hit at her waist, and not somewhere around her hips.

As of right now (and I don't have much done, mind you), the black one looks really snazzy. And the heartplane looks incredible in houndstooth.

ok, b/c your messenger is kick-ass and will probably make it into the post-war I'd really want to buy it. what are some very believable things to tell my parents into buying me your bag?

Persuasion Wise:
I've been carrying a messenger bag of similar materials I made myself back and forth to school with 2 textbooks in it for a year and a half and it is still going strong. It's a bit dirty, but still structurally sound... if the bag breaks under normal usage, I'll either fix it or make you a new bag (through a fault in my workmanship, not "I've been carrying weights in your bag and it broke)... You're supporting an indie artist (which I count as, kind of. I sell other bags and tailor as my "job")... it's handmade with lots of love and a bit of cussing, and ever bag is different (and customizable. With lyrics, or what-have-ye).

That's my argument.

Thanks for the compliments, guys!

i assume you could make the strap adjustable?
so people can wear it how they wish,
and to handle people's different heights easier?

If I were to make these bags for PWT, I'd do adjustable straps (from 24-48")... for Octavia, she knew what strap length she wanted- 20"- (she's very short), so I just made it that length.

But I can do adjustable strap lengths, just like on a store bought bag.
