Interested in Beginning
« on: August 21, 2007, 04:36:17 PM »

I've always thought that brigading would be fun, but I've never gotten into it.  I was just wondering how to actually begin.  I'd like to do the statue thing; I could just start off by doing it in my small hometown, but I don't know where to get the supplies.  Can anyone help me out, please?

Simple answer.... the supplies are basically what you can find in charity shops, from your wardrobe ( and those of friends/ family ) or can make...... The more specialist makeups take some tracking down unless you live in or near a big city, but fancy dress shops or goth shops carry quite a range of basic makeups to use... avoid water based makeups as they tend to deteriorate quickly with sweat or rain..... all you really need to get started is imagination and confidence!..... as for brigading at shows, there is usually some form of Brigade organisation on here for each specific show.... if there appears to be no official brigade for a particular show just turn up and do what you do! ( avoid getting in the way of show staff or requiring anything specific from the venue ) good luck and best wishes!

i started off just by grabbing all what i could get hold of
my costume was awful
i couldnt apply the makeup well
and i was so scared it was unbelievable
but a few months down the line im confident as hell, the makeup is pretty good and my costume is all rather well done
just do what you feel comfortable with, and grow with it
aslong as it makes you happy  :)

Thank you to all of you, the link is very helpul, I just need to find somewhere to buy the makeup and I'm going to brainstorm on a few ideas as to the "character" I'll portray.  I'd like to do the white monochrome and some robes, but that's as far as I've gotten. I'm working on it though.

I once saw a bronze soldier standing in Columbus, Ohio.  He was fantastic! He was the first one I had ever seen, and that's when I was...9ish.  Ever since then, though, I've been fascinated by living statues.

Honestly, you have the right idea.  The first thing I ever did was statuing at my college campus.  In the south.  In the August heat.  It sucked, I was awful, but it was a learning experience.
Statuing's also a pretty easy way to start, though.  It's hard enough being confident enough, getting up and out there in the first place, but once you do, you're more open to trying different and possibly more challenging things.... (aka standing pratically naked in front of thousands of people while someone paints you)

Anyways, just go for it.  It's truly thrilling just to know you've added a little beauty to the world, even if it's simply in your little corner of the world.  Who knows where it'll lead?

I like the thought of that =)
I was terrible the first few times i did it but after a while you find out what works for you
like what to concentrate on, what positions work well, best way to apply the makeup
it all comes together after a while...
even though i do get the occasional idiots that calls me things and trys to make me move
but when you see that little kid in awe of you with a massive smile on there face
it makes all the shit you sometimes get worth it
well for me anyway... =)

Ooh, my first ever post! Hello, all.

I was just wondering, cos although I'm a massive DD fan, I've never quite got totally submerged in the whole this-type bit of it - forum, Brigade, etc - so I'm a bit in the dark, to be honest. What do people do in the Brigade apart from living statues? Cos though it sounds awesome, I just don't have the patience or self-control. Also, where I live is over-run with chavs, and I have anger issues (!) and doubt I could control myself if they starting ragging on at me!

Brigading at a Gig can end up being all sorts of performance art from mime to statue, all the way through juggling and stilt walking or just being an exagerated character that interacts with the audience in some way.... if you want to try something not gig related, try looking around for school fetes or local events and offer your services as an entertainer ( for free if you are starting out ) this will provide a cantrolled environment for your act.... public performance in the Uk can be tricky as each local council can have very different  attitudes to busking and street performers.... if in doubt contact them and explain what you want to do.

Thanks a lot, that's given me a couple of ideas. My only obstacle now is my total lack of skill and/or talent!
