Some have been beautiful, pleasant and generally nice - others have been complete tools) here's a healthy way to view it that I recommend:

I love the music, the art. I do not love the musician, the artist, because all I know is his/her art and not the artist. If the artist is having a shitty day, on the rag, hungover, drunk, whatever - and is a total asshole to me in person or via phone (for radio interview) I can't let that affect the art - especially when it's something that is so meaningful to me.

So, distinguish the difference between the art and the artist. Love the art and admire the artist but in a way that doesn't place high expectations on the artist - who is, afterall only human.

I totally agree with your philosophy. It always makes me think about the Cat Power lyric "don't fall in love with the autograph, just fall in love when you sing that song". However, I just feel that subconsciously it's hard to completely extricate the artist from the art, and even though I know, rationally and logically, that my opinion of them as a person shouldn't really effect my opinion of their art, it sort of does anyway. That's why there are certain artists that I wouldn't really want to risk meeting, for fear that a negative experience might adversely effect my relationship with their art. Because in some ways it's not a rational thing, it's an emotional thing I don't really have control over.

I agree with the both of you. Meeting Amanda was amazing because she surpassed my expectations in terms of how amazing she was despite being jetlagged the first 3 times and sick the last time whereas other experiences I've had meeting people I respect they've been arseholes, or stoned, which was kind of fun because I stole the joint of him and got stoned myself, but didn't really amount to a memorable experience...
