sudden brainwave.....
we are making circus freak puppets at the moment for this... images soon.... but this is a general callout to all that are coming to the show.... bring puppets!
specifically I will also make as many sock puppets as possible and would encourage others to do the same as I want every single member of the audience to have a puppet on them during the show.....during the show I want amanda to look out at the audience and see an Audince made entirely of puppets watching intently and singing along! remember the flowers at KoKO? this is going to be soooo much better

I have been working on some promo ideas for the Fringe, mostly for the album which has been talking up a lot of my time to distribute during the 5 days or so I'll be there but I will definately try and squeeze some time to make a few puppets...I can't promise anything too impressive though as I'm not very creatively gifted. Is there a number if I start I should try to reach roughly, just for an idea?

Yes puppets won't be a problem however
what would we do with them?
other than be a visual interest for the queue...

Awesome idea - shame you couldn't organise it off the shadowbox. Couldn't you imagine Amanda's face if she started singing to a sea of ninja sock puppets?  ;D

Amanda is already somewhat aware of the puppet theme... however she is always somewhat scatty and will probably forget that this is happening until she is confronted with it onstage!
and to Johnny....... we will crowd entertain with puppets plus hand out a plethora (gooood word) of sock puppets for the crowd to use

Well I'm going to try and hit the hundred or so mark as well, I will make as many as I can afford to really, will have to see how many socks I can salvage from my house and then look into buying more and decorating them! Getting them over is a bit of a problem though as I will be flying and will only have one hold bag which will be pretty full from everything else so I may look into maybe sending them in the post to someone in Edinburgh and picking them up so I can do/bring more.

is there a sock puppet tutorial? i'm not really familiar with sock poppets.
since you kindly lent us your beautiful masks for paris, although you were not there, i'd love to contribute and make some puppets and ship them to you or anyone who's going to be at the fringe....

simply take a sock and invert the end to make a mouth..... this can be enhanced with the sewing of a circle of fabric...
stick or sew on eyes add any extras you wish! (hair etc is easy)

I would love to make some sock puppets! This is gonna the first time I've seen Amanda live, the only way I can think of celebrating this is with an army of sock puppets ^-^ But could someone post a picture so I've got an idea of what to do? I mean, I can make them, but I don't want mine to stand out from the sock puppet crowd.

I personally wouldn't worry about it, the more different ones the better! I am going to try and make some ones inspired by the songs of amanda and the dolls (deer (have to drive), Sheep (the sheep song) etc etc) and will mix up the plainer ones I make. The more inspired and colourful I think, the better. It will make it even more of a visual treat in the crowd.

all those who are definitely doing this please let me know as i will need to sort out meetup times when we are in edinburgh..... we will entertain the queue lines before the gig and hand out the sock puppets to the crowd before they go in... Amanda wants to make sure that everything goes on before any action takes place on stage...which was what i was planning anyway! we do not want to distract from the perfomance but also I do not want to interfere with our own enjoyment of the performance..... once inside the venue we can still play with our puppets and intereact but keep it low key and fun

I will be making puppets as I have said to help out but will probably NOT be able to help out with the entertaining/handing out of the puppets the day of the show.

I will be able to meet up though. I arrive on the 21st and don't have anything planned until the evening, and the day of the show I'm free until the show so will be about.

I'm going to there until the 25th if any impromptu gigs/ random art movements are happening during that time, I could definately make an appearance...

why not? justr let the puppets do the entertaining!
will probably recommend that everyone meet up at the forest cafe mid afternoon.....be it for getting ready to perform or merely to hang with fellow shadowboxers and be horrified at what we all look like in the flesh. a puppety sneak attack on the royal mile might be in order too!

Mark- a word on the venue- I wouldn't bother being the first there, it has a stage door and actually doesn't open till 6 anyway. You will be able to meet Amanda without queuing all day.
The venue is on Lothian road- not the best area of edinburgh. I wouldn't reccomend queuing more than an hour before opening.
Though I'm not sure if I'll be working that day or not, I do plan on getting there at doors and staking out the FABULOUS upstairs bar.

How is the bar fabulous may I ask? I've never been in this venue so I dunno what to expect. I was thinking about getting some drinks at Mr Modos before/afterwards since I LOVE the cocktails there. Otherwise I'd agree, Lothian Road isn't Edinburgh's best. Have a soft spot for Modos though...

The bar is fabulous because it's all brass and velvet and mirrors and TOWERS above the stage. You'll see.
Mr Modos? I was thinking Salsa... or something a little more appropriate to the night (Voodoo Rooms or Jekyll and Hyde?).
We'll arrange a pre party nearer the date, got to get my finger on the Fringe first.

does that mean we can't get Amanda to wear the princess Leia outfit?

On a serious note.... would be great to make a large puppet like this, but I do not have a workshop or the money....
something like this requires a large space to create and also requires a largish vehicle for transport.....

then its just carrying fabric 3 sculpts and a bundle of sticks and connectors

now needs a body and arms, plus all those little extras like hair, feathers etc to make it come alive

and Johnny even a chinese dragon style puppet requires a decent size sapce to build it in, which I simply do not have.
If someone else feels inspired to try it then please go ahead!

The puppets so far are completely awesome Robin...

I've been thinking about the sort of "queue entertainment" we'll be doing, and I'm starting to get a tad worried. I'm really concerned that I'll just be a pitiful third-rate ventriloquist, I've never done anything of the sort before. Ahh.

I am creating sock puppets for the brigade to hand out and will probably me making about a hundred or so, although I can't offer my time to entertain at the fringe when I get there which I'm pretty sad about. Nothing on the scale of Robin's epic puppets(probably more along the lines of childrens attempts as I am rubbish) but I am making Amanda/Dolls themed ones. So far there shall be a mix of these prototypes.

Wizard ('When the wizard gets to me I'm asking for a smaller heart')
Cat ('I can't trap a mouse, but I can pet a cat')
Sheep (The Sheep Song)
Flamingo ('Steal Flamingoes and Gnomes from the dark side of the lawn')
A Leeds United Football player
An Army Man ( Guitar Hero)
A Half Man/Half Woman hybrid (Half Jack)

and a couple of others that may or many not turn out so I won't mention yet. I also plan to handwrite and decorate little bits of paper and wrap little song related gifts in them to place inside the puppets for people to find when people put them on.

I don't know if that strictly counts as creative or brigading per se but I shall be contributing that way !

I'm doing pretty much the same thing, little sock puppets to hand out to the queue. I kind of lost my focus when making them though, they've turned into... fluorescent pirates, some of them. They've got nothing to do with the gig whatsoever, and tbh they're kind of crappy, but they're something for people to take away :) Better than nothing. If I can get enough hands to model them I'll put some pictures up :)

the sock puppets just need to be easy to make and fun.... there is no set theme for them!
as for the performin g and entertaining ther crowd lines.....we will meet up well before the gig and have fun practicing with the puppets.... not expecting any high class ventriliquism, and the puppets are dead easy to operate

I'd love to contribute some puppets, but my stock of socks grows smaller by the day, sadly.

Totally up for meeting folks though.

OOOOFt, who would that be, then?

Bongo cafe?... meadows (weather pending)?

The venue is on lothain road, at the western end of Princes Street. It's not the nicest of areas (not bad though, just attracts twats) so I would envision spending the afternoon in the area south of the Mound (sounds dirty).

Meh. I'll figure it out.

The puppets you've posted pictures of are looking pretty cool.

I'm in Cambridge, but can catch a train to London or somewhere nearer to you if it's out of the way [I'm really not sure of the routes to Edinburgh, being Irish].

I'm in Somerset, so if you're serious, your best bet is to head for Bristol and I'll pick you up there

You're driving up from Somerset!? Hardcore.

Also, would Birmingham be feasible to be picked up from? It's much easier to get from Cambridge to there than to Bristol.

Right there seem to be 2 groups (the Hausinka/me group and the Raliel/Two headed boy one)
So if you need to get in touch to meet up with us...

I can be reached on 07511596586
and Robin can be reached on 07783 864809
between those two numbers we can get everyone together in the one spot.
Cat (Haushinka) is from Edinburgh so knows good places to go

Saturday at the meadows mid-day seems to be the plan.
On the road in an hour or so can't wait to see you all.
