Was at the show last night... I have to say, I was kind of disappointed.
I didn't mind the small space, I was excited that the show was going to be that personal but the sound was terrible... was only tolerable when it was just Ms. Palmer and her keyboard. Earplugs didn't help me much.
I was not impressed with Dixie Dirt but I definitely liked Aberdeen City.
The crowd was eh, I saw Katie Kay lurking about and definite props to the audience member in the wheelchair.
Loved that Amanda did her cover of Avril, and I loved the reworking of Night Reconnaissance with the members of Aberdeen City.
Anyone else have any opinions?

Hey, that's hole-in-the-wall bar sound for you. I didn't mind the sound other than the vocals being waaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the mix. Even Amanda's vocals weren't very strong, and she's always very high in the mix. At first, I thought he voice was just kind of shot, but it wasn't really that. (Her voice was a bit off.) Oh well.

Dixie holds it down for Knoxville, TN, so I can't hate them. (I actually kind of liked them.) I liked Aberdeen and how the guitarist almost hit me a few times. There needs to be more chances for random disfigurement at rock shows.

The crowd was eh,

They were weird. They were chatty and seemed into it (in the front anyway), but when the set was over, they were dead fucking silent. I screamed and tried to get them to make noise, but they didn't comply. No encore. :( Oh well.

Yep. :) A pleasant surprise.

w0rd. I feel like I've seen her somewhere before. I could be nuts, though.

Jersey bagels are good.

Setlist:
(Amanda solo)
&
Strength Through Music  (Amanda, I love you, but please don't play this song at bars! It's more of a small auditorium kind of tune.)
Guitar Hero
Another Year
(AC joins Amanda)
Don't Take the Flowers  (Might be a working title, but maybe not. We'll see.)
Night Reconnaissance
You Owe Me a Coke  (WORKING TITLE)
(Band vamps "Eye of the Tiger" while Amanda gives them and random audience members chiclets)
Take Ecstasy With Me  (Magnetic Fields cover)
Awful Detail
Together  (Like, totally Avril)
The Mouse and the Model

See you tonight!

See you tonight!

NY crowds will be better I think (I don't really know, but I'm tryin to put out the universe vibes). I know we will be making some extra  noise.
Oh, and I'm bringing my sister to Cafe Gitane before the show... a lot before really..like 5 or 6ish... but if anyone else is there, do say "hi"!
See ya later kids!

Ecstasy = Magnetic Fields cover. I was thinking Lou Reed when I first heard it myself. Also, AD is, AFAIK, new and written by the hand of Master P-almer.

Tonight's set, 'cause I'm slightly drunk and feel like posting it.

In a Manner of Speaking -> Umbrella  (or whatever that "ella ella ella" song is called, and it was just a snippet to end the song, 'cause FUCK FULL CoVERS)
The Point of it All
The Living Room
Guitar Hero
The Astronaut
(Aberdeen City quit music and place robots on stage, all Kraftwerk style n' shit)
Don't Take the Flowers
Night Reconnaissance
(Katie Kay gives Amanda chiclets, like last night, and she gives them to the band members, although the whole thing kind of reminded me of when Hank III would lick an envelope in one of his vest pockets. I bet the crazy motherfucker had acid on the envelope. I don't think Amanda did acid, though. If she did, she kept her hallucinations to her hippie-ass self.)
Take Ecstasy With Me  (Magnetic Fields cover)
Together  (Lip gloss poppin' or whatever the fuck girl cover.)
The Mouse and the Model
You Owe Me a Coke  (WORKING TITLE N' SHIT)

Encore ('cause New York makes fuckin' noise, unlike those schmucks in Hoboken):
Creep  (Amanda on ukulele w/ singer dude from AC, and I feel bad, 'cause I should know his name)
Kiss  (Prince cover. Amanda on ukulele, non-axe guitar dude on guitar, drummer dude on drums)
Hallelujah  (I cried. I admit it. I want this song played at my funeral.)

The sound was actually good tonight. I could understand Amanda! It was sweet. It was a great night. Thanks to all who I met or met again. I'll be in touch one way or another.

Bedtime. Pleasant dreams!!!

EDIT: oh yeah, and they smoked everybody in the room. That shit was on fire, yo, and it wasn't 'cause Kim Thayil's feedback made a speaker blow up. (True story.) They gelled and brought it, all the way. You should've been there, whoever you are, whether or not you like Aberdeen City.

Hi Guys,
  Good Morning to All !!!
Last night's show was magical. Amanda and Katie really "took me under their wing."  I could not have been more content with life.  It takes a night like last to remind me that everything that I have gone through in my life has been worth it.  Amanda was so kind and sweet and could not stop hugging and kissing me............sigh!!  I have never been this happy, and I know that I will carry it with me for the rest of my life.  I promised her that I would never stop painting... I am so awestruck and delirious that I have not been able to sleep yet. As soon as I edit my photos, I will post them !!!  It was so nice to meet you last night !!!!!  Talk to you all later!!

 Love,
   hayley

What the fuck?

I feel like we were gypped in Hoboken! I wouldn't care if the effort to get there hadn't been enormous and if our parking cost $25, which it did.

I'm mad.

Heh. Heh. Oh, the things I do once a couple of drinks are in me....

Honestly, Hoboken was a bit of a bust. I mean, I had a good time for various reasons, but the effort required did nullify it a bit. I finally paid $28 after 30 minutes of searching, and on top of that, I think the valet helped himself to the $10 I had set aside for toll money. Then, there was the shitty sound and the overly talkative crowd.

I must say that the New York crowd was awesome for once. When Amanda played her quiet songs, you could hear a pin drop. When it was time to cheer, they actually cheered. (I wonder if the Hoboken kids even understood the concept of an encore.) The people I met were quite friendly.

I have more to say but just got back and am half-dead. I'll write more when I've recovered. Until then, enjoy my setlist comments again.

i didn't have the parking charges to deal with, but i did have to pay for a nyc hotel room, as well as the trip from boston

i sat on the bleachers against the back wall and the sound was fine.
of course, the sound booth and soundman were next to me,
which might have made a difference

with eyes closed and ear-drinkin' it all in

the talkin' fools were just that, but i ignored them and concentrated on amanda
to me it was a small glitch in a near perfect night
where are the bounchers when we need them. ;-}

i'll post a comparison between middle east and maxwells, when i'm less tired - just back from the rest of my ny travels

I'm just sad that it wasn't a better experience, for me and for my boyfriend- I've recently turned him into a Dolls fan and he was interested in going to see Amanda... wasn't the best show to take him to, after all. Oh well. There will be other shows- hopefully another Dolls tour at some point.

bummed to hear that maxwell's was a bit of a bust. and surprised to hear that the sound there wasn't good. it usually is ... though if one is standing right up against the stage, you're even with or in back of the PA, so the sound in the well there isn't going to be as good as elsewhere in the club.

as for calling it a hole-in-the-wall, i beg to differ! it's a classic club with a long history of some pretty amazing shows through the years. its age shows, yeah, but still, it holds a candle to all the places in manhattan AND has out-lasted them too. so there!

i'm a little mystified by the lack of cheering for an encore though. that is pretty strange. i don't think i've ever seen that there -- i've seen bands work their way back through the crowd there to play an encore even when one wasn't wanted.

i was at the mercury lounge show and enjoyed the evening. missed the nashville band. aberdeen city, 10-15 years ago, i probably would have lapped up. as it was, i liked what they were doing but wasn't awe-struck. my compadres complained that they never really did anything interesting. i don't agree, but i can see where they are coming from. i guess interesting is in the ear of the beholder.

amanda's set was strange and wonderful and rather unexpected. finally heard the point of it all, the living room, guitar hero and the astronaut. for the first time. i had heard the first but it was very nice to hear it for real. the living room is great. guitar hero wasn't doing much for me until the end. the astronaut has been stuck in my head all day.

wasn't quite sure what to expect from the guitar rock part of the show but it was pretty entertaining too. obviously a different vibe from the dolls but good in its own way too. not knowing any of those songs except "take ecstasy with me" and "night reconnaissance" was a bit challenging, but it's good to be unfamiliar with the live material too.

the encore was fun -- creep in the crowd, kiss (prince covers are still the rage!) and hallelujah were all very nice.

and a happy birthday wish from amander herself right before hallelujah! woo! sorry i couldn't stick around afterward to say thanks for that though. as it was, we barely made it back to new haven alive. the merritt is not a good road to drive at night when one is asleep.

okay, dinner time now.
