Boston-based Carny Rock: MIGHTY TINY
« on: July 04, 2009, 11:00:02 PM »

Editing this post periodically to display the most recent information:

Heya strangers, long time no nothin'. I come here partly out of the selfishness of supporting my comrades, partly out of consideration for you - I can verrrry easily see Dolls' fans digging this act, both the music and the performance techniques.

So! If you remember me from back in the day, you know how discriminating I am with my music, and you know how seriously I take physical theater. These folk put on a SHOW. They are a new band, just formed last autumn, but they are already turning heads in Boston and NYC. Come out, rock out, drink in this much-needed injection of new blood in the Boston music scene!

MYSPACE!: http://www.myspace.com/mightytinyband

WEBSITE!: http://mightytinymusic.com

Their upcoming shows are currently as follows:

November 13th, Harper's Ferry, Allston/Boston, MA
Supporting That 1 Guy!
18+, 8:00 PM, $12

And if you or your buddies are proud residents of Allston Rock City, they play a fuckton of house shows around the area... so keep your ears to the ground.

Here's an advert they made for their July 9th appearance at the MidEastUP - there's a track from their EP:

http://www.youtube.com/v/6L2Wjdg-TOU

Traditional gypsy, 20's jazz, classic blues, and roots bluegrass all inform the twisted web of foot stompin throat hollerin messy bloody lovely dark carnival fun that is MIGHTY TINY. Instruments are violin, accordion, guitars, bass, and drums, the cast is smarmy swaggering top-hatted showman, broken dolls, razor-sharp sprites [one elegant and puckish, the other a silent blank-faced demon], a looming judge of souls, and the look is Venetian masks, tailored dress, keys, charcoal and blood, reds blacks blues and golds.

I can attest that these guys are great performers, and I will be there on July 9th.

I saw them once play to a fairly small audience, on Easter Sunday, of all days, and they still gave all of their heart.

My favorite person to watch is the second guy who does some fucking beautiful and graceful things with his body as he plays. It's hard to explain beyond it being a sort of creeping and slinking that goes along with the songs being played. The music is very theatrical, and I really can't describe it any better than scarletdulcinea described it above. There are so many different styles being brought together.

I enjoyed myself a lot last time I went, I was dancing my heart out and watching a very, very good show being put on. And... I was inspired to write poetry afterwards, which is always a sign of a good experience.

I imagine most people who like the Dresden Dolls, or musically speaking, bigger bands like Luminescent Orchestrii, for example, would really, really like these guys.

I plan to re-activate this topic from time to time as developments occur and new performance dates added, so I will definitely keep you advised when they begin traveling further than Brooklyn! I know they'd love to get around eeeeeeverywhere, but they are still in the very early stage of making a name for themselves, and as you probably know, touring don't come easy. However, they've come pretty far already for only being a composite entity since last autumn, so I'm personally excited to see how quickly "the future" may be upon us.

Thanks for the support and interest, guys!

Hey all! Just a quick reminder about Mighty Tiny's set at All Asia in Cambridge this Thursday as part of a series by CNC Music Productions. The night begins at 7:00 and goes until closing. 21+.

Two of Mighty Tiny's members will be out of town, and it will be a very, very casual set, so if you're looking for a wham-bam introduction to these folk, this isn't the show for you. But if you're in Cambridge looking for something to do this Thursday - welcome!

What Mighty Tiny is reallllly gearing up for amid the slew of house shows with which they've been keeping busy is their EP Release on August 28th at Cafe 939 in Boston! I got my greedy paws on the EP early and I can firmly say that even without the intense immersion of a live show, this is your new favorite band.

Also, amid the carnival of jugglers and unicyclists to be present on the 28th, my friend Samara [you may know her from Providence-area Brigading] and I are going to be performing as a pair of diabolical sprites. Mmmmmmmhm.

this sounds like something i'd like. anything that has influence by 20's jazz and gypsy music is pretty much fair game for me to love.

seeing as i don't like driving in boston, i may see about training in for the 28th show, or the halloween show (although i may have rehearsal that night so we'll see).

If you want an auditory taste, go ahead and listen to the demo tracks they have on their myspace [ http://www.myspace.com/mightytinyband ], or watch the vid at the top of page one for a track off the new EP.

Late notice, but - !

This Thursday, October 1st, Mighty Tiny will be taking the stage at Cambridge's Lizard Lounge with Goli [Vess & Val of Fluttr Effect!] Doors are at 8:30, 21+, $10.

And I hope y'all have your calendars marked for the Halloween Show with Caspian on October 29th at The Middle East Upstairs. It's going to be splendid fun.

Annnnnnnnnd,

Mighty Tiny's long-anticipated EP, Eat People, is for sale on their website!!

Mosey on over to http://mightytinymusic.com and click on "store." They also have a Demo available for FREE download, so check it out!!

The release show on August 28th couldn't have been better, by the way. Thanks to everyone who came out!

I'll leave you with a little love note from the band's myspace blog:

Dear You,

We of Mighty Tiny just can't get enough of you, our listeners. And there is nothing more that would please us than to please you. And there is nothing more we can do to please you than perform for you. And in order to perform for you, you have to know what's going on with us.

It was this very deduction that led me to believe I should keep you delightful individuals in the know. So, after nearly 18 months of pondering, pacing, and thoughtfully smoking a pipe, I decided to go mad. After a 3 year stay at an asylum, I was considered well enough to once more exist in society, and after a brief position as a cashier at a Piggly Wiggly in Higginsville, Missouri, I realized I should start a blog.

Of course, I entered insanity with such vigor, I had only actually been within the depths of madness for several hours, and have never even been to Missouri. I figure, why half-ass it?

So, my esteemed colleagues, here's the rub.

In less than one week's time, you can be a part of yet another Mighty Tiny expedition at the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge, MA. You will most possibly be amused, and we will most amusingly be possible. The doors are at 8:30 and the festivities begin at 9. Alongside us shall be DJ Phillips, Kate Miller Heidke and Keir Nutall (on tour with Ben Folds), and the lovely Goli. Our new EP "Eat People.", and free copies of our demo will be served alongside it simply for coming to see us.

Stick with me here...

Also coming up is a Halloween show at the Middle East (actually on October 29th) with Caspian, and, holy lord, we're just thrilled. Seriously, we are. It will be glorious, and it's the best Holiday invented since Flag Day.

Also on the burner is a possible show in November with Emperor Norton's Stationary Marching Band, and one in December with New York-based Copal. Both potentially amazing experiences. More details will follow, I'm sure.

Until then, it has been a pleasure, nay, an honor to update you astonishing, astounding, and, frankly, awe-inspiring individuals (thank you thesaurus.com). And, until our paths once more coincide, do take, care, won't you?

Thanks to those who came out last week! The show was rockin'.

Another love note from Mighty Tiny to you:

For those of you tuning in from last week, you might remember that our old friend Detective Dolles was posing as a security guard in a mint to catch the counterfeiting bandit when he was locked in a closet. Well he escaped from that very closet and acted just in time to stop the shipment of false coins, proving that you can never be too careful when it comes to close quarters!

Good day ladies and gentlemen, hes shes and zhes, Mighty Tiny here keeping you informed on our escapades and shenanigans but as always, not our exploits. Thank you dearly to the whole lot of you who joined us at the Lizard Lounge on the first to celebrate just about anything worth drinking and celebrating over. Surely you were regaled by our friends D.J. Philips, Kate Miller Heidke & Keir Nutall, and the ever-charming Goli. If you weren't, shame on you, we expect you to make it up to us. We enjoy cookies and cakes and are delightfully devoid of food and nut allergies, so please make any baked goods out to your friends in Mighty Tiny, and make sure to mail them in a wicker basket with a red checkered table cloth or the post office will not take them. I cannot stress that enough! They will rot in the post office. The letter carries aren't even allowed to eat them as per a law recently pushed through by the department of homeland insecurity.

Friends (and if you are not our friend we respectfully request that you close your browser now and clear your history as this is really something tender to be shared amongst close acquaintances) we here at Mighty Tiny absolutely love you. By god we are crazy about you. Talking to a three legged dog crazy dammit! And because we love you so very much we are throwing a Halloween Gala at the Middle East Upstairs just for you. You may not realize but we operate on the old Etruscan Calendar and hence our Halloween falls on your October 29th, but no matter what method you use to enumerate your days and nights (ours is in fact a tidal calendar) we hope with all the whimsy and grand designs of a kid in a puppy store to see each and every one of you. Make sure to come dressed in your best Halloween attire as well! You know that we love our costumes and being the polyamorous group that we are, we will love the lot of you even more than usual if you show up and truly join the Masquerade!

So on this coming Halloween we do have a few surprises for you, and I would love to ruin a couple for right here and now! If you are among the first fifteen lucky folks to sign our mailing list you will be rewarded with a free Mighty Tiny sticker! These things are so damn new we can't even show you a picture of them, so hot off the presses you'll burn all your fingers and toes!* Oh and don't sign it a second time if you already have because it causes a rip in spacetime and we are, quite frankly, tired of sewing it shut. We aren't your mother you know! Furthermore the first fifteen people to buy our EP Eat People get not only the finger-melting sticker, but a sexy 8.5"x11" poster of your friends in Mighty Tiny. This fantastic poster comes complete with black magic so we know exactly when you copy rip and share our EP with the torrent community at large, and if you think we called it Eat People on a whim you will be sorely (and deliciously) mistaken!

In summation friends, come to the Middle East Upstairs, in costume, October 29th! Come and watch us praise the musical gods along with Caspian, Dreamtigers and Beware of Safety, all top notch performers! Finally, come buy our cd and sign our mailing list and be rewarded with presents! What could be better?

Don't even answer that, the definitive answer is that nothing could be better.

See you soon, (or so help me Gods)

Mighty Tiny

Thanks to all who came out to last week's SOLD OUT show with Caspian at The Middle East! If you missed out [tickets were long gone hours before doors], or you simply can't get enough, they are playing another show next Friday, the 13th of November at Harper's Ferry in Allston, supporting the phenomenal That 1 Guy.

[If you don't know who That 1 Guy is, you are seriously missing out: classically trained double bassist who invented a one man band contraption called The Magic Pipe, a seven-foot tall collection of steel plumbing pipes and joints, orchestral bass strings, and electronics. His songs range the subjects of raining meat, how the moon is disgusting [it's made of cheese!], various fruits and mustaches.]

Mighty Tiny opened for That 1 Guy last spring, and he liked them so much he invited them back. Won't you join the party?

of a child burying into a breast;
a tangible connection but also the perfume
or stench that is language. Ah,
the irregular verbs. Oh, the conditional.

Love note!:

Tales of Wizards and Gizzards

Indulge me a bit my captive audience of gregarious gagglers. Years ago in this past March, Mighty Tiny happened upon the strangest of fellows on a dark and winding road. Perhaps it was in a swamp down in Mississippi or high above the continent out in Colorado, or possibly at the Middle East Upstairs in Cambridge Massachusetts, but we were there and much to our shock we stumbled upon the most mysterious of troubadours. He gave us no name, only the secretive handle of That 1 Guy and he noticed on us the distinct Mark of the Albatross (Chapter 4771), our magical guild/sanctioning body/union. Rolling up his sleeve to reveal his branding of the Silver Monkeys (Chapter 17) and thus revealing himself as a friend, we engaged into a lively chat which developed into a wonderful jam session, then a minor disagreement, a possible scuffle, and finally a fond and friendly hug. Before the night was over we engaged in the proper farewell which would bind us to meet should again we found ourselves in the same city, and continuing along our journey we left him to play his magical pipe by his lonesome.

Years (or roughly 8 months) have passed...

That 1 Guy has decided to return to Boston and, aren’t you lucky good ol’ Mighty Tiny’ins, your friends at Mighty Tiny (thanks to our proper use of magic) will again be playing along side this magnificent man. Yes friend, this Friday November 13th, you will bear witness to the spectacle which is Mighty Tiny, playing with Heatbox and That 1 Guy at Harper’s Ferry. Now I know what you are asking yourselves, curious observers. You ask “But how can I get tickets to this wonderful event? Will I be able to get my little brother in to help me steal things? Is it legal to own a possum as a pet in the state of Arizona?” and I have answers for the lot of these. Tickets can be obtained through the Harper’s Ferry website (http://www.harpersferryboston.com/). Your little brother can get in so long as he is at least eighteen years of age and while possums are usually not considered a legal pet it is crucial that you check with your local municipality.

Now, some of the above details may have been a little fabricated to stave off certain inquiries by the Council of The Albatross, but I assure you that this Friday at Harper’s Ferry, you will find Mighty Tiny, Heatbox and the wizardly That 1 Guy, complete with shenanigans and magic pipe. We hope dearly to see you all, each and every one of you and we will be making a list. Christmas is coming you know, and if you think a band like us doesn’t have a direct line to Santa Claus then you are sorely mistaken. So if you want presents this year you had better make sure to come out this Friday, because in the end Santa hates poor attendance.

'Till then,

-D
