I wonder why no one else really hates it like I did.
It was lacking depth and deviated from the whole plot of the book.

I've forgotten the plot of the book completely, but as for lacking depth - IT'S HARRY POTTER!! It's not meant to be a deep and probing look at the darkest inner workings of the human soul - it's meant to be wands and sparks and very, very famous people popping up on screen for about two minutes in a silly wig.

Haha.
The bit about a silly wig made me laugh.
What I meant by the depth comment is that it didn't go into anything.
It sort of grazed over things that happened and didn't offer many explanations.
Rather than omit a few things and explore the storyline more, they tried to jam a lot of things into the movie just for the sake of having them there.

I'm going to see this again tomorrow, and this time I'm gonna pick it apart mercilessly, because I feel I was far too soft on it last time.
I will report back with my findings in approximately 27 hours.

could you elaborate on how the movie deviated from the plot of the book?

i don't think it deviated from the plot of the book at all, really.
i think it was actually that it left things out, but the PLOT itself wasn't really changed?

It just seemed like the plot was lost.
The movie felt like a bunch of things pasted together, with a little bit of young Voldemort and Draco thrown in there.
Key points [such as The Seer Overheard, elaboration on what objects they thought the horcruxes were and Dumbledore's funeral] were missing.
I suppose that's more of just leaving things out, but I felt those were things you needed to know.
The book was mainly centered on Dumbledore preparing Harry for his journey and arming him with knowledge needed to eventually defeat Voldemort.
All the while, we're given conflicting information on Snape and Draco's character is developed.
Instead of seeing all the memories, we saw few and did not learn about Riddle's persuasive nature, his fascination with the founders of Hogwarts or his ancestry.
We also did not learn about the protection Harry has at the Dursleys' house - the reason he has had to stay there.
What everyone was feeling seemed very basic.
While Draco's internal struggle was reasonably well played in the movie, Harry's [other than romantic] feelings were pretty much absent.
The movie ended without Harry's grim realization, but rather a light note about Ron's approval of Harry and Ginny's relationship.
Romance is a part of Half Blood Prince, but it seems as though the movie spent too much time on it.
They also spend a fair amount of time changing circumstances [i.e. The murder of Dumbledore, the reason Harry went down to Hagrid's, why Harry did not help Dumbledore in the astronomy tower] and grazing over information that is important in Deathy Hallows.
I suppose that the very basic plot is the same, [horcruxes, dead Dumbldore, yeah, yeah] but this new movie seems very loosely based on the book.

the end shot and ending just reminded me of empire strikes back
ends on a down note and a friends staring off through a window into the next film

This is one of my main problems with movies in general. They play out like everything needs an important romance angle in order to be interesting. Not true, and annoying when they stick it in there where it's not needed or play it up when it's distracting from other aspects of a film.

I was debating whether or not to go see it with my 8 yr old because he's afraid of zombies, but then he went with his day camp yesterday and saw it. He said there were two scary parts, but he didn't come wake me up in the middle of the night last night so I guess it wasn't too bad. Maybe we'll see it at the cheap-o theater matinee-style this weekend. I hate that movie tickets are $11 apiece.

Haaaaaaa I've seen iiiiiiit!!!

Fucking loved it. I screamed out loud, and the whole cinema laughed at me :( And I cried. And it made me laugh SO much more than any of the other ones - especially when Harry had that luck potion thing. Srsly, he was just stoned >.<

I know what people mean by it not going into depth on the plot and stuff - it seemed sometimes almost like one long trailer, the scenes were so short and they really were just cracking on through it. But then I don't think you can really hold that against them - they had an impossible task, trying to get SUCH a lot of story into SUCH a short amount of time. Also, I think people underestimate just how different the mediums are - it seems kind of daft to try and compare a book and a movie, even if they're dealing with the same story, because the limits and constraits are so, so different in each.

Mind you, if they miss ANY of Neville's glory in the next film, I'm suing. And he had more than one line - he also did Background Talking, Shocked Face, Sad Face and Cheering, so there.

I think they could have done a better job regardless.
Order of the Phoenix is the longest book in the series, and I was satisfied with the movie adaption.
I stick by this:
Rather than omit a few things and explore the storyline more, they tried to jam a lot of things into the movie just for the sake of having them there.

If they didn't stick stuff in, it would be completely dry and crappy - if it was solely the main plot, it would have been incredibly boring. They need the things like the romance and the extra fiddly bits on the side, or else it's just rubbish.

Also, when are you sending my damn cookies?? Jks!

I enjoyed the Half Blood Prince a lot and would like to start reading the final book (I did not read any of the others) so I don't have to wait till the last movie to see the ending.

I'd be very grateful if you could go into detail about how the book was different in the places you mentioned and what I should know before reading Deathly Hallows.

I'd also like to know why Snape calls himself the "Half Blood Prince" unless of course it is in the last book.  I'll just read that one myself.

He called himself it because he's half-blood and his mum's maiden name was Prince, I think.

I've not read the book in AGES, so maybe that's why I didn't mind the changes that much - I was seeing the film as something almost completely separate from the books.

It's been too long since I read the 6th book to get all nerdy, but I really enjoyed the 6th movie.
And am I the ONLY one that wanted to have sex with Draco when he showed his sensitive side? Not even have sex, I wanted to cuddle with him. And tell him everything would be allll right.
I'm a sick sick woman.
