Jay kay.

ummm. . .  we have awesome hiking trails; First Landing is awesome.  The beach is pretty, on the north end.  I pretty much dig the weather here.

I live in Boston. It is the hub at the center of the universe, so they say. It is my home. I am happy here, and as much as I may wander the earth in my lifetime I like to have a home to come back to.

Honestly, the list is endless.  I get really, really snobby about my home.  I'm in the best part of New England, and since New England is the best part of the United States, I'm in the best part of the country... the only possible contenders would be the lovelier parts of Cali [I have a friend in Arcata, and apparently that's right-up-there with my town] and the Northwest, where I hear there's a similar mix of natural beauty and culture.

I live in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts, specifically in Amherst.  First of all, the earth.  The earth is magical here.  It sounds dippy, but it's true, there's something special in the soil, life resonates and vibrates.  The trees are tremendous breathing greens.  As we're in a valley, we are surrounded by gorgeous mountains, perfect for climbing.  There are lovely trails a-plenty leading all over the Valley.

Amherst itself is a quaint but very lively town-- this is a college community.  We have five colleges throughout Amherst and Northampton; the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Amherst College, Hampshire, Mt. Holyoke, and Smith.  Thusly there is a bustling city atmosphere, but without the grime.  There are so many people that you can literally carve out any kind of community you desire.  The locals are a bunch of ex-hippies and hippie-yuppies who take good care of Amherst's appearances, flowering trees, everything very attractive.  Most of the shops downtown are local businesses, and we have, like, six book stores in the center alone.  We're also home to the best pizza I've ever had [Antonio's, represent!] and the best coffeeshop I've ever been to [Rao's!], and Amherst and surrounding towns are full of great cafes which are vegetarian-friendly and totally delicious.

In Amherst you get the whole spectrum.  You can travel next door to Leverett, get totally lost in the woods, and visit the first Peace Pagoda built in the states-- a Buddhist temple, right in the Valley.  Or, you can head in the other direction to Northampton, which is a city and a total cultural hub with tons of shows and awesome musical acts coming through.  We are also only two hours away from Boston, which is important to me, since I grew up south of Boston... I just hop on the Peter Pan bus to come to Boston to see a show whenever I like.  And, we're just three hours away from NYC, so if you have a soft spot for that metropolis, you can head on that way, too.

Really, I can't sing Amherst's praises enough.  It's been so good to me, and so good to everyone I love.  I'm resisting posting images just to show you!

Ok. Since Katherine went in deep:

We've got Tombstone, in which there is the Boothill Graveyard. Billy Clanton of the Clanton Gang (they were there before the Earps) is burried there, as well as a lot of others (there's a list there). Many famous gun fights occured in Tombstone, like the infamous OK Corral shootout. It's a really fun place to go and see "shoot outs" and it's only about an hour from Tucson.

We also have Old Tucson Studios. Revenge of the Nerds, at least one scene (the panty raid scene) was filmed on the U of A campus.

There's also Suguaro National Park, which amazes the hell out of me, not only because of the cacti, but that bikers and hikers are out peddling and hiking those mountains in the freakin' summer heat. Gates Pass is no joke. It's such a neat place. The valleys, as you look out in them, it's just so easy to picture dinosaur just kinda crusin' around.

Kitt Peak Observatory is also a neat place to go, as AZ is well known for it's amazing celestial views and lightenting storms.

There's 4 wheeling, and rock crawling, mountain lakes (cold ass water), just all kinds of things for people who just enjoy nature, and being outside. We even have Mt. Lemon, yes, you can snow ski in Southwest Arizona. (Although I don't think the "season" even starts until January, long after all other parks have their trails open, but still.)

So. There you have it. I'm sure there's a lot that I've not mentioned/don't know about, but that's a start.

Yeah dead famous people!  Emily Dickinson lived in Amherst, and her homestead is a big attraction.  I've been cliche and visited her grave when I've had writer's block.  Some of the townies have taken to dubbing my spring/fall-weather statue character "The Ghost Of Emily," though that's off, because Emily's known for staying housebound and wearing nothing but white.  Ah well.

Robert Frost was born here and lived here, as was poet Robert Francis, and Noah Webster [as in, Webster's dictionary].  Uma Thurman [whom I worship for her portrayal of The Bride] was born and raised in Amherst, as was Augusten Burroughs, author of Running With Scissors ["the Finch's" house is in NoHo, his mom and dad lived in Amherst, and his father was a professor at UMass].  We also currently have James Tate, a famous contemporary poet, who is also a professor at my university, and, the extremely well-known Martin Espada who has been dubbed "the Pablo Neruda of North America" for his work, and teaches at my university, and will be my professor for the second time this coming semester [I took a seminar on Neruda with him last semester, and this semester it's a course called Poetry Of The Political Imagination]... I am very, very lucky to be able to work with a figure such as himself.  Also, he adores me.  Katherine for the win.

Ironically, "Amherst" is named after Lord Jeffrey Amherst, who committed the first conscious act of germ warfare on this continent: he purposely gave diseased blankets to the natives, in order to wipe them out.  It feels like all the super-liberal hyper-conscious activists which rule this area now are subconsciously trying to have their actions balance that fact.

Designer Jeffrey Sebelia.  Whom I'm obsessed with.  He hails from Detroit.  He named his son Harrison Detroit, and then tattooed it on his neck along with "the love of my life" in Italian.

Okay, my town has the second longest town green in New England. (Exciting, right?)

We have an AWESOME gorge in the middle of downtown, where the harbour meets a river, and there's a waterfall and rocks and it's pretty.

We have the International Headquarters of Subway, Inc. (Yes, the restaurants) and downtown is the first ever Subway.

We have Dunkin' Donuts on every streetcorner. I'm not even kidding, there are like 25.

And across the street, where my elementary school still stands, there is a swamp. They call it Calf Pen Meadow, because when the British were spotted during the Revolution from a house on top of the hill up the street, all the people living there hid their cows in the swamp, so the British wouldn't take them.

There's not a lot of things that I don't love about Detroit. I love the wind tunnels that form downtown during the winter. I love riding the skanky-ass People Mover. I love the old buildings. I especially love the Train Station, even though it looks rather forlorn and solemn with it's busted out windows and rain stained walls. I love Joe Louis and The Fox, and the history of the city.

I don't even know how to explain it all, I just love Detroit.

Weeeelllll... I have to say that I do not currently live in my favorite place.. NJ kinda sucks in many ways, not the least of which is that I am at least a 4 hour drive (up to 8 ) from anyone in my immediate family. Still there are a handful of things that are cool.
1. 45 minutes to Philly (some call this a minus)
2. an hour to NYC (I would still be there if I had all the money in the world)
3. My house is pretty fucking cool. Home ownership rules.
4. Close to the ocean.. I myself am not a fan, but it's kinda cool
5. Several major airports within a reasonable commute
6. A lot of cool history happened here
7. The weather is not bad. Still have seasons, but winter isn't ridiculous - I pretty much hate snow.
8. It's very green. Plants seem to like the weather too.

I guess that's about it. I'd rather be in any number of places to be honest, but hubby has a job here, and we have a cute little house in a cute little neighborhood that is walking distance from "the hood". What more can ya ask for?

Speaking about what's in the city itself, Niagara Falls. Oh, and hydroelectric power, and a couple of rather good spots for UE (urban exploration). In the general area, good fishing, which I'm not really interested in, excellent beer, which isn't my thing, either, a thriving art and music scene, the Buffalo Sabres, nice historical sites, such as Fort Niagara, and many, many sites conducive to UE.

I could also list a bunch of good restaurants, as well, but they should be in a category unto themselves. Despite the continuing economic depression in WNY, there are still many positives.

You're in Buffalo???! We lived there for several years before we got married. Still have really good friends in the Kenmore area, and my mother in-law lives in Angola. Oh, and the windmills.. ROCK.

You can see them along route 5 near the General Mills plant. Huge white things. Very nifty.

ROCK.

Heh, Niagara Falls, but Buffalo is just a short jaunt away. Which windmills are you referring to?

You can see them along route 5 near the General Mills plant. Huge white things. Very nifty.

You wouldn't happen to be speaking of the wind farm that is being erected on the site of Bethlehem Steel, would you?

Shawn can probably relate to this, since it applies to Buffalo as well. It's cool as fuck to live in an international border city, especially when your foreign neighbor is one of the best countries ever (welcome back, malcontent!). :glasses9:

1) I live very close to the borderline of Scarborough and North York. I just walk up my street til I hit Victoria Park and then I'm in Scarborough but if I walk back a few steps I'm in North York. It's really cool.

2) From my apartments balcony there is this very beautiful winding road. Well it's more like a backward 'S' shape. I'll show a picture one day. Or later on.

3) I live only 10 minutes away from the best art school in the world yo. A 10-minute walk but because I'm such a fuckin lazy ass I take the bus which is like a 5 minute bus ride plus me J-walking across the street across the field and into the school which is a 3-minute walk. So I save 2 minutes.

4) It is a half hour bus/subway ride to Downtown.

There's not much more I can think of. I guess for my mother we live 5-minutes away from the mall where they have a gym and she goes there to work out while I stay at home and do 30-minute cardio crap with a machine.

My city has a 'renaissance' and now pretends to be a little European. Despite how much the city fails....I find it endearing. We have waterfire..with gondalas...little fires lit in the water..and oodles of street performers. We have federal hill which is our version of little italy...with an fake italian piazza included

this is fantastically awful

also

also, I like that I don't drive and get around the city incredibly easily..and it's about an hour from boston..and less than 4 from new york.

Okay, the town my school is in is actually kinda cool. I go to the same school and and am in the same video program as the ever so lovely Pixie of PixieVisionProductions.com. That's pretty cool.

And I'm 5 hours from Boston, 1 from the city, 1.5 from Philly. So I'm right smack dab in the middle of everything.

And Kevin Smith.

and before you all start saying "baltimore is scaaaary" let me say this: it's fucking awesome.

my school is pretty damn awesome. it's art school. i make art. and turn it in for a grade. i cannot think of a better way of life.
i fucking love my roomate to death.
the inner harbor is pretty, but a bit too touristy for my tastes.
hampden, fells point!!!! best areas of this town, loads of indie shops
art is EVERYEWHERE, thanks to the college
and, it's a city, man. so much cooler than the suburbs. now i don't have to say, "oh, i live a half hour from the city." because i am in a city. and nothing could be better. (well, if the dolls came down here a little more often, i guess that could be better. but i have friends in boston, so i'll probably visit all you northerners when i scrounge up the bucks for the train)

I can walk 1 foot and be in a corn field. 10 feet and be in a corn field. i can drive 100 miles and still be in a corn field. and it sucks. BUT. i can also spit and scratch my butt and pick my nose without any problems. THAT is actually fine by me....

And that's how I like it.

Downtown is almost Disney-like these days imo; hell - even the Cass Corridor isn't the Cass Corridor anymore, except for those first few blocks north of I-75. The west side, though...man, what happened? It's not like 6 Mile & Livernois (where U-D Mercy is) was ever Easy Street (at least not in my lifetime), but these days...shit, I'd almost rather be in Baghdad after dark than there. If anything, it gets worse heading west from there. :o
Fortunately, I don't have to be down that way these days.

hmm, i'm guessing you live in jersey, somewhere around the redbank area? seeing as kevin smith's shop is there, unless he commutes a lot...which i don't really see why he would do that...anyway, i lived/will be living during the summertime about a forty five minutes away in roxbury.

that's cool. MICA gave me a shit ton of aid, which made me an incredibly happy panda.
i almost applied to RISD, but in the end didn't, because of the send in your work policy. i just wasn't ready to give up the best things i've ever drawn forever by folding them to a place that the chances of me getting accepted to weren't too high anyway :-\

but the good news is, now we can be art school buddies :D haha.

Detroit is probably the one area in the United States where urban explorers wouldn't look down on other UEers for being armed while exploring. So much to look at, but not without the risk of getting yourself killed, or at least beaten.

I live in Wisconsin.
We not only have that ginormous cow in our town,
but where I live is only an hour away from Milwaukee,
which is also known as Brew City. I'm not sure of how
many actual breweries are there, but there's of course,
Miller, Old Milwaukee (nasty shit), Leinenkugel's, Sprecher,
Pabst, Schlitz and many more smaller breweries.
One of the really great things about the drinking laws in
Wisconsin is that you can drink if your parent provides
you with the alcohol, until you're 21 and can drink on your own.
I love that law, since I like to drink, and my mom's actually cool to drink with.
Also, where I live is 45 minutes from Madison and 2 hours away from Chicago.
It's pretty rad.

I've grown up with the benefits of both suburban life (due to proximity to Dublin) and the clean air and safety of the countryside, and it's given me an appreciation for nature.

I'm almost tempted to post pictures, but I can't find any and it's still dark outside...

the trannies on Santa Monica Blvd. spice up my night every time. you'll not find the finest trannies anywhere else in all of the country.

seriously. i've seen trannies much hotter than i could ever hope to be as a female. and that's very, very sad.

Not only to West Midlanders have the worst accent in England, but we also have the worst buses.Considering I've not been on other buses, this is just a guess. But you can't get much worse than WM buses.

But on a positive note;
We have more canals than venice.
We have many, many bars, restaurants and what are they called?? Nightclubs.
We have alot of theatres and art galleries (there are many art galleries).
We also have the biggest collection of Sainsburys and Tescos imaginable.

And then there's the all singing, all dancing, Bullring.

Personally, I don't think it's that great.

I can see stars (though not nearly as many as a bit further up north.

I'm forty minutes from Boston and thirty from Manchester (there's a small airport there, way less congested than Logan.)

Until September 17th, indoor smoking has been at the discretion of the establishment.

We have a neat town forest that is very accessible, never crowded and beautiful.

America's Stonehenge http://www.stonehengeusa.com/  (I thought it was lame when I went as a kid, haven't been back since, but apparently other people find it interesting.)

http://www.canobie.com/   Canobie Lake Park (Overcrowded and expensive for the most part, but living in town you're bound to know someone that can hook you up with free passes/food once there)

That's pretty much it.

You wouldn't like the bullring if you lived in Birmingham.
We have alot of things to do round here, but I don't do it. Infact, the only graffiti wall has a sign saying "please refrain from graffiting on this building"
I might get some pictures next time I'm round there. It's quite an odd place.
I don't go to skate parks.
Colmore Row is full of teenage kids who look the same. Long fringes, Eyeliner, tight jeans, dark clothes. You know the type? I feel intimidated walking through there.
So really, the Bullring is the only place where everyone can go without feeling overwhelmed - That is, if you're confident around large amounts of people. I'm not. And I dislike shopping. So, I like to go into the hills. Clent and Lickey hills are great.
And you can't help wondering when those escalators are going to just buckle under the sheer pressure of people on them.

I used to walk by that every day on my way to work from the eight dollar parking lot around the corner. Breakfast was alway at the Finagle a Bagel nearby.

The job was across the river in the buliding next to where the Tea Party was, Did they ever fix that broken down landmark? It was in pretty bad shape in those days.

I miss those days.

Gee Tim...  Perhaps you recall:

To those who may not be familiar with the structure: it used to be, well, The Richmond Dairy.
Now it's overpriced apartments, but they kept a decor that highlights the bottle-shapes that
make up parts of the structure.  Yes, people live IN the bottles.

Also, it's right across the street from a cool artspace/venue called Gallery 5.

George Washington and that Marquis de Lafayette character camped in my backyard during the revolution 300 years ago? they built a headquarters, its down my street.
when I was younger, after it rained i would go out and dig for stuff they left behind. Ive found a ton of bottles and buttons. at the headquarters i found teeth and other such medical things.
Every year they do a reenactment of what it would have been like when they were here (: right on my street
they also do the reenactment of Georgie crossing the Delaware every Christmas its fun I know some of the guys who take part in it

I live in the woods, in a neighborhood that is a circle, surrounded by woods. I have a creek/ river in my back yard. When i was younger it used to be a different magical world to me

I'm surrounded by nature parks, and perserves and lakes and parks of the type.. its beautiful...

Across the creek is a church that was part of the underground railroad. It has a nice belltower and they ring them in the spring, it's nice. Once the spring comes lilies and daisies bloom on the hillside by the creek and the geese come and nest.
because of the church there is a graveyard across the street (: there is an Indian princess buried there

There is a railroad right down the road. It used to be used for transporting steel and what not back in the day of industrialization. It still is used for freight at night

Indians used to live here, back in the day before we did. every middle school here is named after a tribe. every elementry school is named after a founder of the county or town and the highschools are directions.

10 miles up the road in New Hope is a mule barge, and the Delaware canal. back in the day mules used to carry the boats up river to reach the river so they could reach the other river and flow through to deliever stuff.

Old York Road runs right by my house, it's now a highway but was a road that lead from New York to DC. It runs through Philly. People used to travel it on horseback to get around a billion years ago. Because of this there are tons of historical halfway houses around here where they would stop and hitch up their carriages from the night

new hope is the second or third gay capitol (in the us?) after provincetown. Its a really beautiful area and it has tons of theatre and shopping
dtown is 5 miles up the road, also a shopping place. Its our local scene. Tons of bands come through on their way to Philly and play sometimes, its cool. Its has some history about it too.
the area is pretty haunted because of it's age..
In dtown (doylestown) there is a castle, called font hill and Moravian tile works. Henry mercer lived there, he collected tile from all over the world and built it then he made his own factory, font hill, and made his own tile. its sick, also haunted. he has another castle building down the street that he built as an attic.
He was friend with Pearl S. Buck, who was an author ( I live in BUCKS county ;D)
Mercer apparently wrote some famous musical or play which i forget right now..

levittown, is close, built by.. someone levitt, back when they had steeltowns and American dreams. the houses are cookiecutter, the whole town looks the same. it's kinda a dead/poor area now..shock.

Bethlehem has musikfest every year, tons of people come in and play and litter the streets in all types of music. It's pretty sick.

My area is or was rather, all farming. we have tons of cows even though its really developed. its like suburban bliss. completely developed but some pockets of kickass farmage. I'm right outside of Amish land. its exciting

There is tons of shopping, like famous shopping districts, new hope, doylestown, hatboro, peddlers village..

I'm a 20 minutes drive from about 10 malls

Tons of famous people come to visit here and live here. its pretty cool
peter jackson is here filming a movie and stephen spielburg or George Lucas was here just the other day, flown in to one of the highschools.
and the m night shamalyan dude lives here and filmed the villiage, Mel Gibson filmed signs here.. so on.. so forth.

there is the state penitentiary (abandoned now I believe) they do a kick ass halloween thing there every year, have to sign waivers in case you die. apparently it's haunted

I'm an hour away from sixflags, hershey and dorney park ;D
Tons of colleges in Philly
and I'm surrounded by cities within a days drive
(that means a TON of concerts for me)

the German society is down the road, they have a polish and German festival every year
on that note
The shrine of Czestochowa is up the road, they have a huge polish festival.

They built a castle in doylestown, next to the park where they have Oktoberfest and pumpkinfest every year. The castle is a giant playground for children and it used to be the largest twirly slide in the..country or world. then we got outbuilt ):

we have tons of deer and geese... its a problem. the people are generally unfriendly and stuck up. The average people here are overlooked due to for the most part, people here are either really filthy stinkin rich or pretty goddamn poor.

3 mile island, a power and chemical plant is just a short drive. as is bam margeras house.

I'm sure there are more things I'm forgetting but.. Damn. Thats long
I didn't think this place was that cool..

last year we encountered a mid-april snow that stuck...I might have to start heading south...
Also there are lots of lakes...I live six blocks away from one. And then there are two connecting lakes that are only a couple miles each from my house. Funny thing is I hate lakes.....I don't like swimming and they are filled with god only knows what.....

I love PA. There's just something special about the people, and the country. Funny story... My grandmother lives in an extremely rural part of the state. Like, there are still red dog roads, farms, animals in fields, old men who make their own wine, that sort of thing. My cousin brought a friend up from college a few years ago, and the girl damn near had a heart attack when she saw a sheep standing in a field. Apparently, it's not safe to drive on a road that's not paved (or that doesn't have lines painted on it) or near where animals are grazing in a field.

I love Pittsburgh too, but the city has a whole different charm. Like, the sort of charm that the countryside doesn't have. Plus, the shopping's great too.

the tropical rain storms which almost drown the school bus

the palm trees

the way you can still be 100% original, since the population is like less than 10 000. i think, 9 000? not sure.

the way down town is so fucking small you can find anyone anywhere. Don't even look.

how there are no valid laws on anything concerning alcohol or clubbing

I live in Bakersfield, California.

Korn is from here. (Kern county. ha ha.)
There is a skate shop named Baked. Explaining it to my mother is what I loved.
The mall has cars inside it.
Ever 9 year old owns a skate board and practices in their drive way at the same time in a creepy children-of-the-corn kind of way.
My best friend lives a street away.
The vet is three houses down and they are afraid my dog will get car sick on the way home. HEHE. I know the truth. We WALK. AHHHH.
There are two major venues and no good bands play there. Why do I like that? Because then good bands are forced to play small venues, or just go to LA instead, I don't like that. Most of the small venues are near my house. Kimya Dawson is playing 7 miles from my house. :)
There is a trader joes. I like that.
There is a road called Coffee Road. The sucky part is that there is no coffee shops on that road. Not even a starbugs.
There's a Real rd. And a So. Real Rd. It's just, so real. I laugh every time.

I'm not from here so I notice everything.

There's thrift stores everywhere.
Has a Kmart. I thought those went instinct. Must be preserved. "And this is the original pizza hut grease stain from 98...."
There is a road called Korn road.
Extremely tight pants are popular, or extremely baggy. I think this is funny.

Theres an old Brick house that's been abandoned for god only knows how long and I happened upon it one day, and on the top left brick above the fireplace in the living room (I presume) is a scrawled signature and a poem in what seems to be old fashioned fast dry pen paint. " Mclean ~ upon of which her eyes so bold, held a stare of which so cold, it threw me into a state of shock, I could no longer feel my cock."
I think it's damn neat.

-our lake (lake erie) caught on fire from all the pollution (this was in the '70's I believe)
-our crime rate has increased something like 40% this past year!
-our public school system is so shitty that most of our highschoolers barely know how to read
-Drew Carey is from here
-Michael Symon, the newest Iron Chef, is from here!
-I was born and raised here!

Cleveland really isn't so bad.  Granted most people hate it and make fun of it.

From the window I'm sitting by, all I can see is trees and the ocean. And houses of course.

But here everything is close and central with in walking distance.

Peter Jackson lives here, Lord of the Rings was filmed in places around here.

And it isn't considered strange to see a group of people walking round carrying alcohol.

i just moved to strathfeild... its pretty much just the suburbs, but ive always lived in the city. quite an adjustment haha

i really really love my new house and housemates but the area is terrible. there's nothing and its far away from everything. luckily the train station is really good. well in the sense there are constantnly trains going to and from it. the station itself kind of smells and lots of people get stabbed there haha

the town square also smells. my street smells alright though, fresh air isnbice after being in the city for so long. and theres lots of trees!

not multicultral in the least though. the only food you can get is korean. nothing against korean food but do kind of like... you know.. variety

but aside from the shitnessof the area, by house ios awesome and giant and iots very easy to leave! so yay!  :D

For the passed week the streets have been packed with tourists. Oh my god. It's such a bitch to move around the streets when urrbody is takin' they lovely ass time to read every goddamn sign on every goddamn window. BUT having newcomers always beats the average Torontonian.

There's this really awesome art college, OCAD, and its structure is surreal. I envy those assholes.

We've got the lovely Kensington Market. Such a humble place. You will find many hippies and rastafarians. And there's that lovely park where everyone goes to smoke weed. The popo only hunt down dealers and people on shrooms.

Random mooses lying around.

The CN Tower from everywhere you look.

And today I'm going to the opera which is in this building.

Dude.... I LIVE THERE.

There's not much cool about the town I live in, except that we have more pubs per capita than any other town in the county and almost all of them are full of real ale and live music. That's pretty ace. We also have HILLS - real big fucking hills that are actually worth having, none of these shitty molehills they call hills in the south. Pfft. It's really pretty as well, and, most importantly, it's really easy to get out of and go somewhere actually interesting xD

A few things cool about the area I live in...
-I'm about an hour from New York City by train.
-if you drive long enough in one direction, you'll hit water.
-we have the best bagels, pizza, and chinese food (if you don't count the city).
-accessible theaters every few miles or so.
-take a ferry on the North Shore, you get to Connecticut. take a ferry on the south shore, you'll be on Fire Island.
-it feels like upstate is a completely different world.
-never (other than in the city) will you find a diner on every corner.
-never (other than in the city), will you be able to find someplace that's opened past nine on a Friday night.
-we started Carvel, and the original Nathan's isn't too far.
-we have the Amityville Horror House.
-we have mentions in a song by Billy Joel.
-we have some kick ass beaches.

Oh, the joys of Long Island. :D

I'll post about where I'm actually living right now and then some other time I'll post about where I live when I'm not at school.

Quote from: Wikipedia
In the early 20th century, Bronzeville was known as the "Black Metropolis," one of the nation's most significant landmarks of African-American urban history. Between 1910 and 1920, during the peak of the "Great Migration," the population of the area increased dramatically when thousands of African-Americans fled the oppression of the south and emigrated to Chicago in search of industrial jobs. Many famous people were associated with the development of the area including: Andrew "Rube" Foster, founder of the Negro National Baseball League; Ida B. Wells, a civil rights activist, journalist and organizer of the NAACP; Bessie Coleman, the first African-American woman pilot; Gwendolyn Brooks, famous author and first African-American recipient of the Pulitzer Prize, actress Marla Gibbs, the legendary singers, Sam Cooke and Lou Rawls, and Louis Armstrong, the legendary trumpet player and bandleader who performed at many of the area's night clubs

Also I'm just a few minutes away from downtown Chicago, which has too many cool things for me to list.

-if you drive long enough in one direction, you'll hit water.

The average New Zealander lives at least an hours drive from the ocean.
For me it's about 10 minutes to the closest beach, 20 to the best one for hanging with friends.

One of the singers from ABBA found out that Atlanta is the rap capitol and decided to move here and make a rap album with such pleasant lyrics like "Bitch you do not ride with me, bitch you do not ride with me. Bitch you ride the Marta bus, bitch you ride the Marta bus." I swear, I don't see how I put up with this city sometimes, between Mr. ABBA Rapper and that crazy Solja Girl (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXz-tlK2pkI)

That's so cool!

The unfortunate part for a Long Islander is you either have to pay money to park (especially in season), or the rich folk bought up all of the beach.
At least there are a few beaches that aren't too far and are easy enough to get into. :)

you have to pay to park at a beach? Stink.
During summer, it's just first in first served, if you can find a park, you gun for it, it's quite scary sometimes haha.
We also have the rich problem of rich folk, but only with their huge houses taking up what used to be parking spaces, but the beaches are still public land, except for the rare beach which falls on their property land, in which case you're not allowed to access the beach, but some rick folk are nice and let people anyway.

Yeah, it does. There's this one whacky beach not that far from my house that charges twenty-five dollars during the season. And some places you need a Town's Residence Pass.
There's loopholes in the whole "rich people" thing though. They'll have a gated beach community, but if you park on the other side, you can walk down to where the fence ends. xD

Whenever there's a tsunami warning, people do one of three things:
a) continue about their daily business
B) flock to the beach
c) flock to higher ground with a good view of the ocean.

Also, from anywhere in the North Island, it's about a 5 hour drive to the closest ski field.

I live in Milwaukee, WI. There are exactly 3 interesting/cool things about Milwaukee, WI.

1. Jeffrey Dahmer. Duh.

2. The Violent Femmes.

3. Someone tried to assassinate Teddy Roosevelt here, and shot him in the shoulder or something and he went on to give a 90 minute speech before getting medical attention because "if i'm not coughing blood my life's not in danger" though I guess really that's more something that's cool about Teddy than something that's cool about Milwaukee.

Dundee is supposed to be home to the best worst poet ever. It's the "City of Discovery" though I'm not sure why. Dundee is the home of Desperate Dan (from the comics!). There is a monument that stands on top of what used to be a volcano (many thousands of years ago) and it's 500m above sea level. The railway bridge collapsed in the 1870s sometime and had to be rebuilt (obviously). The ship that Captain Scott sailed across the Antarctic with was built here and it sits in the harbour.

It's actually a pretty interesting place, history-wise.

Miller Park, helloooooo.....   :knuppel2:
(Best ballpark I've been in...  although I'll admit I've only been in a very few...)

I've been to Milwaukee a couple times, and found it very pleasant, and warmer than Chicago.
Maybe I shouldn't visit that part of the country in January...  ya think?

Ashbourne
In 1820, Frederick Bourne made a village near his tollbooth and named the place after his favourite tree, and himself, i.e. Ash and Bourne.
In 1916, a couple of peeps went and shot all the police fellas, so they got a statue of Jesus, which was no where near the place where it happened.
In 2009, we got a cinema.
In 2012, the screening of Sex and The City 3 in the cinema triggered Armageddon.

The Velodrome was closed down in 1989 or so; a couple of years ago, some guys began cleaning it up, cutting down some trees that were growing along the inner edge of the track, and patching up the potholes as best they could. now there's (underground) racing (minibikes/scooters/bicycles) again at Outer Drive and Mound!

Our ability to recycle anyfuckinthing that was previously left for dead.

if you needed any more proof...Detroit's advanced state of dissolution has, among other things, made fertile ground for documentaries by indie filmmakers. Here's a link to one; the first guys you'll see is my late friend Blair, who died last July:

http://vimeo.com/28279409

there's plenty more at Vimeo; just put "Detroit documentary" in the search box.

Colorado... Big ass mountains. Great for skiing, white-water rafting/kayaking, and camping. 300+ days of sun a year (most after Hawaii).

Mariposa

The bar that I go to has the original foundation of the town as a wall. It's the only building with the original foundation, taboot, because downtowns burned down a few times since the 1800s.

It's an old 49er town. People still goldpan and we have a gem & mineral club. The mining & mineral museum is being shut down, due to lack of state funding. :/

We don't have a mall, or a movie theater. The closest is in the bustling Merced (bahah) which is 50 minutes away.

Our current population is 2,173 (up from the 1,500 on the sign).
From Wiki: "The county courthouse, constructed in 1854, is the oldest in continuous use west of the Rockies."
I've been in there. The floor is starting to sink and they're talking about moving out of there before the place collapses. Super cool building though.

Here it is, Mariposa, California:

The gateway to Yosemite National Park (an hours drive and 20 bucks per car to get in):

Colorado. It has so much to offer. Like fire. Fire and more fire.

and now a non-Photoshopped image from just one of our fires, the high park fire. This picture is beautiful, yet chilling because of what it represents.

Interesting(ish) things about my town (and actually I live in a teeny-tiny town off of this one):

-There is a candy company & a chicken factory -It smells like sugar or gross depending on which way the wind is blowing
-It is a bout 45 minutes from a big ass lake & there are pine trees everywhere (no joke its called the "Pineywoods")
-We were in the area of the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster

edit: and a player from the Cowboys is from here but he isn't really anything to brag about soo...

We have some bus stops painted with art. Some of them are great,  most trivial, others reproduce or emulate famous painters/illustrators art. It is been awhile since I first thought about photographing them, but I dont have the means - taking the bus to take a photo of every cool stop is not doable (too expensive). I dont have a driver license, meaning I cannot drive my father's car to these cool stops. Also, I cant ride a bike, and my bicycle is wrecked since 2003.

I live in the city where the famous philosopher Rumi lived and died.

We have a huge museum consisting of his schools, and the mousoleums of him & his followers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rumi

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mevlana_Museum

There also are various historical buildings, like an observatory school, and none of them were built later than 1500 A.D.

There is lots of wrong information going on about Rumi. People consider him as a religious leader or such but in fact what he did was quite out of Islam or any other Abrahamic religions.

Sufism, on the contrary of Abrahamic religions asking you to believe in an invisible god, suggests you to consider everything and everybody as a part of god.

On the other hand, Rumi is known for his humanism and collectivism rather than his religiousness. And there are some proofs about a gay relationship between him and Shams Tabrizi, which again conflicts greatly with Islam.

As a deist, i have great respect to his thoughts, he did a great work fighting all the nonsense conservatism and religious discrimination in center Anatolia saying "Come, come whoever you are. Ours is not a caravan of despair.". In brief, he was in favour of freedom of thought & belief before it was cool.

I went out to see the lunar eclipse..... It was completely overcast.

I went out to see the Lyrid meteor shower...  It was mostly overcast,
and combined with light pollution from the city, it made viewing pointless.

A decade or so ago, back in my city, the bus stops used to be like this:

Then, a project with support from the city's pro culture (arts in general) office invited artists  from the city to paint those bus stops. They would either paint their own art or their interpretation from someone's else. I always thought about walking around the city to photo shoot those, but I never did. I think I always took it for granted. Now, we went from this (thse are from an specific artist who used to post his work on FB):

to this

Fucking new mayor.

EDIT: when I mean interpretation, I mean this:

Juiz de Fora, my city, is a dull, sad and dead city, with few things that gives life to it. It is sad what they have done.

EDIT 2:

These are one of the few arts. Thee may more, but those I know by heart where they were located:
