I live in Boston. It is the hub at the center of the universe, so they say. It is my home. I am happy here, and as much as I may wander the earth in my lifetime I like to have a home to come back to.

Honestly, the list is endless.  I get really, really snobby about my home.  I'm in the best part of New England, and since New England is the best part of the United States, I'm in the best part of the country... the only possible contenders would be the lovelier parts of Cali [I have a friend in Arcata, and apparently that's right-up-there with my town] and the Northwest, where I hear there's a similar mix of natural beauty and culture.


I live in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts, specifically in Amherst.  First of all, the earth.  The earth is magical here.  It sounds dippy, but it's true, there's something special in the soil, life resonates and vibrates.  The trees are tremendous breathing greens.  As we're in a valley, we are surrounded by gorgeous mountains, perfect for climbing.  There are lovely trails a-plenty leading all over the Valley.

Amherst itself is a quaint but very lively town-- this is a college community.  We have five colleges throughout Amherst and Northampton; the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Amherst College, Hampshire, Mt. Holyoke, and Smith.  Thusly there is a bustling city atmosphere, but without the grime.  There are so many people that you can literally carve out any kind of community you desire.  The locals are a bunch of ex-hippies and hippie-yuppies who take good care of Amherst's appearances, flowering trees, everything very attractive.  Most of the shops downtown are local businesses, and we have, like, six book stores in the center alone.  We're also home to the best pizza I've ever had [Antonio's, represent!] and the best coffeeshop I've ever been to [Rao's!], and Amherst and surrounding towns are full of great cafes which are vegetarian-friendly and totally delicious.

In Amherst you get the whole spectrum.  You can travel next door to Leverett, get totally lost in the woods, and visit the first Peace Pagoda built in the states-- a Buddhist temple, right in the Valley.  Or, you can head in the other direction to Northampton, which is a city and a total cultural hub with tons of shows and awesome musical acts coming through.  We are also only two hours away from Boston, which is important to me, since I grew up south of Boston... I just hop on the Peter Pan bus to come to Boston to see a show whenever I like.  And, we're just three hours away from NYC, so if you have a soft spot for that metropolis, you can head on that way, too.

Really, I can't sing Amherst's praises enough.  It's been so good to me, and so good to everyone I love.  I'm resisting posting images just to show you!

Ok. Since Katherine went in deep:

We've got Tombstone, in which there is the Boothill Graveyard. Billy Clanton of the Clanton Gang (they were there before the Earps) is burried there, as well as a lot of others (there's a list there). Many famous gun fights occured in Tombstone, like the infamous OK Corral shootout. It's a really fun place to go and see "shoot outs" and it's only about an hour from Tucson.

We also have Old Tucson Studios. Revenge of the Nerds, at least one scene (the panty raid scene) was filmed on the U of A campus.

There's also Suguaro National Park, which amazes the hell out of me, not only because of the cacti, but that bikers and hikers are out peddling and hiking those mountains in the freakin' summer heat. Gates Pass is no joke. It's such a neat place. The valleys, as you look out in them, it's just so easy to picture dinosaur just kinda crusin' around.

Kitt Peak Observatory is also a neat place to go, as AZ is well known for it's amazing celestial views and lightenting storms.

There's 4 wheeling, and rock crawling, mountain lakes (cold ass water), just all kinds of things for people who just enjoy nature, and being outside. We even have Mt. Lemon, yes, you can snow ski in Southwest Arizona. (Although I don't think the "season" even starts until January, long after all other parks have their trails open, but still.)

So. There you have it. I'm sure there's a lot that I've not mentioned/don't know about, but that's a start.

Yeah dead famous people!  Emily Dickinson lived in Amherst, and her homestead is a big attraction.  I've been cliche and visited her grave when I've had writer's block.  Some of the townies have taken to dubbing my spring/fall-weather statue character "The Ghost Of Emily," though that's off, because Emily's known for staying housebound and wearing nothing but white.  Ah well.

Robert Frost was born here and lived here, as was poet Robert Francis, and Noah Webster [as in, Webster's dictionary].  Uma Thurman [whom I worship for her portrayal of The Bride] was born and raised in Amherst, as was Augusten Burroughs, author of Running With Scissors ["the Finch's" house is in NoHo, his mom and dad lived in Amherst, and his father was a professor at UMass].  We also currently have James Tate, a famous contemporary poet, who is also a professor at my university, and, the extremely well-known Martin Espada who has been dubbed "the Pablo Neruda of North America" for his work, and teaches at my university, and will be my professor for the second time this coming semester [I took a seminar on Neruda with him last semester, and this semester it's a course called Poetry Of The Political Imagination]... I am very, very lucky to be able to work with a figure such as himself.  Also, he adores me.  Katherine for the win.


Ironically, "Amherst" is named after Lord Jeffrey Amherst, who committed the first conscious act of germ warfare on this continent: he purposely gave diseased blankets to the natives, in order to wipe them out.  It feels like all the super-liberal hyper-conscious activists which rule this area now are subconsciously trying to have their actions balance that fact.

Okay, my town has the second longest town green in New England. (Exciting, right?)

We have an AWESOME gorge in the middle of downtown, where the harbour meets a river, and there's a waterfall and rocks and it's pretty.

We have the International Headquarters of Subway, Inc. (Yes, the restaurants) and downtown is the first ever Subway.

We have Dunkin' Donuts on every streetcorner. I'm not even kidding, there are like 25.

And across the street, where my elementary school still stands, there is a swamp. They call it Calf Pen Meadow, because when the British were spotted during the Revolution from a house on top of the hill up the street, all the people living there hid their cows in the swamp, so the British wouldn't take them.

There's not a lot of things that I don't love about Detroit. I love the wind tunnels that form downtown during the winter. I love riding the skanky-ass People Mover. I love the old buildings. I especially love the Train Station, even though it looks rather forlorn and solemn with it's busted out windows and rain stained walls. I love Joe Louis and The Fox, and the history of the city.

I don't even know how to explain it all, I just love Detroit.

Weeeelllll... I have to say that I do not currently live in my favorite place.. NJ kinda sucks in many ways, not the least of which is that I am at least a 4 hour drive (up to 8 ) from anyone in my immediate family. Still there are a handful of things that are cool.
1. 45 minutes to Philly (some call this a minus)
2. an hour to NYC (I would still be there if I had all the money in the world)
3. My house is pretty fucking cool. Home ownership rules.
4. Close to the ocean.. I myself am not a fan, but it's kinda cool
5. Several major airports within a reasonable commute
6. A lot of cool history happened here
7. The weather is not bad. Still have seasons, but winter isn't ridiculous - I pretty much hate snow.
8. It's very green. Plants seem to like the weather too. 

I guess that's about it. I'd rather be in any number of places to be honest, but hubby has a job here, and we have a cute little house in a cute little neighborhood that is walking distance from "the hood". What more can ya ask for?

I really cant think of anything nice to say about where i live...oh wait, the main street is quite pretty if you drive through it fast!

1) I live very close to the borderline of Scarborough and North York. I just walk up my street til I hit Victoria Park and then I'm in Scarborough but if I walk back a few steps I'm in North York. It's really cool.

2) From my apartments balcony there is this very beautiful winding road. Well it's more like a backward 'S' shape. I'll show a picture one day. Or later on.

3) I live only 10 minutes away from the best art school in the world yo. A 10-minute walk but because I'm such a fuckin lazy ass I take the bus which is like a 5 minute bus ride plus me J-walking across the street across the field and into the school which is a 3-minute walk. So I save 2 minutes.

4) It is a half hour bus/subway ride to Downtown.

There's not much more I can think of. I guess for my mother we live 5-minutes away from the mall where they have a gym and she goes there to work out while I stay at home and do 30-minute cardio crap with a machine.

My city has a 'renaissance' and now pretends to be a little European. Despite how much the city fails....I find it endearing. We have waterfire..with gondalas...little fires lit in the water..and oodles of street performers. We have federal hill which is our version of little italy...with an fake italian piazza included

and, it's a city, man. so much cooler than the suburbs. now i don't have to say, "oh, i live a half hour from the city." because i am in a city. and nothing could be better. (well, if the dolls came down here a little more often, i guess that could be better. but i have friends in boston, so i'll probably visit all you northerners when i scrounge up the bucks for the train)

Downtown is almost Disney-like these days imo; hell - even the Cass Corridor isn't the Cass Corridor anymore, except for those first few blocks north of I-75. The west side, though...man, what happened? It's not like 6 Mile & Livernois (where U-D Mercy is) was ever Easy Street (at least not in my lifetime), but these days...shit, I'd almost rather be in Baghdad after dark than there. If anything, it gets worse heading west from there.
Fortunately, I don't have to be down that way these days.

Detroit is probably the one area in the United States where urban explorers wouldn't look down on other UEers for being armed while exploring. So much to look at, but not without the risk of getting yourself killed, or at least beaten.

I live in Wisconsin.
We not only have that ginormous cow in our town,
but where I live is only an hour away from Milwaukee,
which is also known as Brew City. I'm not sure of how
many actual breweries are there, but there's of course,
Miller, Old Milwaukee (nasty shit), Leinenkugel's, Sprecher,
Pabst, Schlitz and many more smaller breweries.
One of the really great things about the drinking laws in
Wisconsin is that you can drink if your parent provides
you with the alcohol, until you're 21 and can drink on your own.
I love that law, since I like to drink, and my mom's actually cool to drink with.

I live in Wisconsin.
We not only have that ginormous cow in our town,
but where I live is only an hour away from Milwaukee,
which is also known as Brew City. I'm not sure of how
many actual breweries are there, but there's of course,
Miller, Old Milwaukee (nasty shit), Leinenkugel's, Sprecher,
Pabst, Schlitz and many more smaller breweries.
One of the really great things about the drinking laws in
Wisconsin is that you can drink if your parent provides
you with the alcohol, until you're 21 and can drink on your own.
I love that law, since I like to drink, and my mom's actually cool to drink with.
Also, where I live is 45 minutes from Madison and 2 hours away from Chicago.

West Midland England.
Not only to West Midlanders have the worst accent in England, but we also have the worst buses.Considering I've not been on other buses, this is just a guess. But you can't get much worse than WM buses.

But on a positive note;
We have more canals than venice.
We have many,many bars,restaurants and what are they called?? Nightclubs.
We have alot of theatres and art galleries (there are many art galleries).
We also have the biggest collection of Sainsburys and Tescos imaginable.

And then there's the all singing, all dancing, Bullring.

So really, the Bullring is the only place where everyone can go without feeling overwhelmed - That is, if you're confident around large amounts of people. I'm not. And I dislike shopping. So, I like to go into the hills. Clent and Lickey hills are great.

Across the creek is a church that was part of the underground railroad. It has a nice belltower and they ring them in the spring, it's nice. Once the spring comes lilies and daisies bloom on the hillside by the creek and the geese come and nest.

There is a railroad right down the road. It used to be used for transporting steel and what not back in the day of industrialization. It still is used for freight at night

Indians used to live here, back in the day before we did. every middle school here is named after a tribe. every elementry school is named after a founder of the county or town and the highschools are directions.

10 miles up the road in New Hope is a mule barge, and the Delaware canal. back in the day mules used to carry the boats up river to reach the river so they could reach the other river and flow through to deliever stuff.

Old York Road runs right by my house, it's now a highway but was a road that lead from New York to DC. It runs through Philly. People used to travel it on horseback to get around a billion years ago. Because of this there are tons of historical halfway houses around here where they would stop and hitch up their carriages from the night

new hope is the second or third gay capitol (in the us?) after provincetown. Its a really beautiful area and it has tons of theatre and shopping
dtown is 5 miles up the road, also a shopping place. Its our local scene. Tons of bands come through on their way to Philly and play sometimes, its cool. Its has some history about it too.
the area is pretty haunted because of it's age..
In dtown (doylestown) there is a castle, called font hill and Moravian tile works. Henry mercer lived there, he collected tile from all over the world and built it then he made his own factory, font hill, and made his own tile. its sick, also haunted. he has another castle building down the street that he built as an attic.
He was friend with Pearl S. Buck, who was an author ( I live in BUCKS county )
Mercer apparently wrote some famous musical or play which i forget right now..

levittown, is close, built by.. someone levitt, back when they had steeltowns and American dreams. the houses are cookiecutter, the whole town looks the same. it's kinda a dead/poor area now..shock.

Bethlehem has musikfest every year, tons of people come in and play and litter the streets in all types of music. It's pretty sick.

My area is or was rather, all farming. we have tons of cows even though its really developed. its like suburban bliss. completely developed but some pockets of kickass farmage. I'm right outside of Amish land. its exciting

I'm a 20 minutes drive from about 10 malls

and the m night shamalyan dude lives here and filmed the villiage, Mel Gibson filmed signs here.. so on.. so forth.

there is the state penitentiary (abandoned now I believe) they do a kick ass halloween thing there every year, have to sign waivers in case you die. apparently it's haunted

I love PA. There's just something special about the people, and the country. Funny story... My grandmother lives in an extremely rural part of the state. Like, there are still red dog roads, farms, animals in fields, old men who make their own wine, that sort of thing. My cousin brought a friend up from college a few years ago, and the girl damn near had a heart attack when she saw a sheep standing in a field. Apparently, it's not safe to drive on a road that's not paved (or that doesn't have lines painted on it) or near where animals are grazing in a field.

I love Pittsburgh too, but the city has a whole different charm. Like, the sort of charm that the countryside doesn't have. Plus, the shopping's great too.

update: the new issue of Newsweek has a write-up on the DIA; the islamic collection will be back up in a few months. One of the things the management is working on is a path to the exhibit space that doesn't take the viewer past any works that feature nudity.

A few things cool about the area I live in...
-I'm about an hour from New York City by train.
-if you drive long enough in one direction, you'll hit water.
-we have the best bagels, pizza, and chinese food (if you don't count the city).
-accessible theaters every few miles or so.
-take a ferry on the North Shore, you get to Connecticut. take a ferry on the south shore, you'll be on Fire Island.
-it feels like upstate is a completely different world.
-never (other than in the city) will you find a diner on every corner.
-never (other than in the city), will you be able to find someplace that's opened past nine on a Friday night.
-we started Carvel, and the original Nathan's isn't too far.
-we have the Amityville Horror House.
-we have mentions in a song by Billy Joel.
-we have some kick ass beaches.

Yeah, it does. There's this one whacky beach not that far from my house that charges twenty-five dollars during the season. And some places you need a Town's Residence Pass.
There's loopholes in the whole "rich people" thing though. They'll have a gated beach community, but if you park on the other side, you can walk down to where the fence ends. xD

Dundee is supposed to be home to the best worst poet ever. It's the "City of Discovery" though I'm not sure why. Dundee is the home of Desperate Dan (from the comics!). There is a monument that stands on top of what used to be a volcano (many thousands of years ago) and it's 500m above sea level. The railway bridge collapsed in the 1870s sometime and had to be rebuilt (obviously). The ship that Captain Scott sailed across the Antarctic with was built here and it sits in the harbour.

It's actually a pretty interesting place, history-wise.

Mariposa

The bar that I go to has the original foundation of the town as a wall. It's the only building with the original foundation, taboot, because downtowns burned down a few times since the 1800s.

It's an old 49er town. People still goldpan and we have a gem & mineral club. The mining & mineral museum is being shut down, due to lack of state funding. :/



We don't have a mall, or a movie theater. The closest is in the bustling Merced (bahah) which is 50 minutes away.

Our current population is 2,173 (up from the 1,500 on the sign).
From Wiki: "The county courthouse, constructed in 1854, is the oldest in continuous use west of the Rockies."
I've been in there. The floor is starting to sink and they're talking about moving out of there before the place collapses. Super cool building though.

It is been awhile since I first thought about photographing them, but I dont have the means - taking the bus to take a photo of every cool stop is not doable (too expensive). There is lots of wrong information going on about Rumi. People consider him as a religious leader or such but in fact what he did was quite out of Islam or any other Abrahamic religions.

Sufism, on the contrary of Abrahamic religions asking you to believe in an invisible god, suggests you to consider everything and everybody as a part of god.

On the other hand, Rumi is known for his humanism and collectivism rather than his religiousness. And there are some proofs about a gay relationship between him and Shams Tabrizi, which again conflicts greatly with Islam.

As a deist, i have great respect to his thoughts, he did a great work fighting all the nonsense conservatism and religious discrimination in center Anatolia saying "Come, come whoever you are. Ours is not a caravan of despair.". In brief, he was in favour of freedom of thought & belief before it was cool.
