I hope the Islamic/Middle eastern display isn't gone for good; some beautiful stuff there. Didn't make it down there last weekend, but I should relatively soon. Their collection is vast; they're always rotating things in and out on a fairly regular basis.

plur

They do have a great collection, though I wish I had been able to see the Claudel and Rodin exhibit they had a few years back. I'm terribly excited that it's re-opened.

Now I'm kicking myself for not going. I've been able to see the Degas and De Medici exhibits, though, and they were both wonderful, but  dang, I wish I had gone!

Aside from bringing us chocolate the guy also set up a school for orphaned boys in the town.. it's still open

I love PA. There's just something special about the people, and the country. Funny story... My grandmother lives in an extremely rural part of the state. Like, there are still red dog roads, farms, animals in fields, old men who make their own wine, that sort of thing. My cousin brought a friend up from college a few years ago, and the girl damn near had a heart attack when she saw a sheep standing in a field. Apparently, it's not safe to drive on a road that's not paved (or that doesn't have lines painted on it) or near where animals are grazing in a field.

I love Pittsburgh too, but the city has a whole different charm. Like, the sort of charm that the countryside doesn't have. Plus, the shopping's great too.

*bump*

Attention: Detroit-area/southern Ontario/NW Ohio members & lurkers!

The multi-million $ renovation and expansion of the Detroit Institute of Arts is complete and, now that it's past midnight local time...TODAY is opening day! :) :) :) :coolsmiley:

They're opening the doors for 34 straight hours beginning at noon today and ending at 10 PM Saturday night, so, if you ever really wanted to spend the night at the museum, here's your chance. Who knows - if you're strolling through about 24 hours from now...you might just see me.

Not that I'm going to tell you who I am or any stupid shit like that. ;D ;D :-X :glasses9:

I've been told that there is even a bust of Augustus and a statue of Vaenus Genetrix in the Ancient History courtyard, but the Islamic room is MIA.

Thoughts?

update: the new issue of Newsweek has a write-up on the DIA; the islamic collection will be back up in a few months. One of the things the management is working on is a path to the exhibit space that doesn't take the viewer past any works that feature nudity.

the way you can still be 100% original, since the population is like less than 10 000. i think, 9 000? not sure.

the way down town is so fucking small you can find anyone anywhere. Don't even look.

how there are no valid laws on anything concerning alcohol or clubbing

ayia napa waterworld.

I live in Bakersfield, California.

Korn is from here. (Kern county. ha ha.)
There is a skate shop named Baked. Explaining it to my mother is what I loved.
The mall has cars inside it.
Ever 9 year old owns a skate board and practices in their drive way at the same time in a creepy children-of-the-corn kind of way.
My best friend lives a street away.
The vet is three houses down and they are afraid my dog will get car sick on the way home. HEHE. I know the truth. We WALK. AHHHH.
There are two major venues and no good bands play there. Why do I like that? Because then good bands are forced to play small venues, or just go to LA instead, I don't like that. Most of the small venues are near my house. Kimya Dawson is playing 7 miles from my house. :)
There is a trader joes. I like that.
There is a road called Coffee Road. The sucky part is that there is no coffee shops on that road. Not even a starbugs.
There's a Real rd. And a So. Real Rd. It's just, so real. I laugh every time.

I'm not from here so I notice everything.

There's thrift stores everywhere.
Has a Kmart. I thought those went instinct. Must be preserved. "And this is the original pizza hut grease stain from 98...."
There is a road called Korn road.
Extremely tight pants are popular, or extremely baggy. I think this is funny.

And the fact no one egged us when we dressed medevil for Beowulf.
