Ag, even with all of your countries flaws, you have one of the best functioning democracies in the world.
i promise i am not as cynical as i sound, and that in the end i am appreciative of what i do have in this country, which is a lot.  i'm just exasperated daily by people, and that's exacerbated by living in alabama.  you know how many jokes end with (or take place in) alabama?  it's really no worse than anywhere else; in fact i kind of feel proud of it for hanging its problems (and giant faux pas) in the front window like it has, rather than hide them or pretend they didn't happen, like a lot of the country has a tendency to do.

you know the thing i have seen that most consistently draws americans together is disasters.

but then you have assholes like the one electoral college member of our three who says, 'i really don't care what the popular vote in alabama is or who they choose, i am casting MY vote for george bush' and i want to start burning down federal buildings and screaming for a governmental upheaval all over again.  sometimes i think we need a monarchy, also.  sometimes i think we would benefit from a good dictatorship we have to overthrow.

it's a cycle that works for me...

Follow-up...

Are you sure about that elector?  The last time I can find a record of a "faithless Elector"
was in 2000, when the Elector from DC simply didn't cast her vote (to protest DC's lack of
Congressional representation).  Did the guy actually vote the wrong way, or just threaten to?

oh, in the end the popular vote was bush, so it didn't even matter.

i actually heard it from a guy commenting on things he ought to have known about.  i dated a niece of a republican senator or governor or something i'm not willing to specify in public of this great state and it was a personal commentary of someone working for that office i was privy to, or it never would have even registered in my memory, to be honest.

please answer the question:

what was g.w.bush's worse mistake as president?

you may also include a mistake made before 20 jan 2001

discussion on answers welcome
A point of semantics:
-the comparative form "worse" implies that there are only two possible answers.

If I might presume to rephrase the question for you:

what was the worst of g.w.bush's vast assortment of mistakes as president?

My initial thought was his choice of running mate co-president, but that happened before
the election, and someone else probably made the choice for him.

that was and remains my answer to the question i started this thread with:

choosing cheney as vp was g.w.b.'s worst mistake

his second was listening to cheney too much,
and letting cheney have too much independent power

cheney/rumsfeld/wolfie were all likely to play some role in g.w.b.'s
administration, as they had served in prior administrations,
and were still not too old to serve

sadly, they were among the more hawish and less thoughtful of g.w.b.'s father's advisors.
e.g. brent scowcroft would not have advised going into iraq

cheney/et al advice lead us into iraq,
limited resources to really solve the problem in afghanistan,
curtailed civil liberties,
etc.

one of the iotas of respect i have
for g.w.b. is that he said no to cheney/et al
a number of times

not clear if there was maneuvering or not by outsiders for cheney to be vp

the news @ the time, was that g.w.b. choose cheney to head his vp search
committee, and was so impressed by cheney's effort that he asked cheney to be vp

One of the things that always amazed me about Dubya is how someone so totally not a
"smooth talker"managed to pull off so many things that we'd otherwise just chalk up to
smooth talking.....

Being born into the right social-economic circumstance is usually a greater asset than anything a person does or says. It is only those who aren't born into positions of power that need to develop rhetorical and negotiational skills in order to get somewhere.

then how do you explain those skills in people like franklin roosevelt or nelson rockfeller?

Or JFK? Good Question. They are either outsiders in some other regard or they develop those skills despite the lack of a great need to do so.

I'd be a poor President...

I'd also be sub-standard as a Major-League ballplayer, electrician, stage-actor, or even bricklayer.

Nevertheless, I can tell you when someone doing one of those jobs is clearly unqualified and
incompetent, even if they still do the job better than I could.

see how long it would take me to declare a state of emergency, giving myself absolute power, and then cracking down on reform in a manner the world hasn't seen for a thousand years.  i would reintroduce the guillotine, for one thing, collect an amazing harem, and then the emo purges......

you know, it is a good thing i am nowhere near a position of power, come to think of it.  but, george bush was still a douche.
