i dislike radiohead and coldplay.  when amanda played 'creep' at her concert i attended in birmingham, i had never heard it before, had no idea where she might have got it from, figured maybe she wrote it.  i listened to it later because a friend who knows music told me why everyone laughed delightedly when she covered that song on a ukelele, and liked her version better.

Creep even uses the phrase "I'm a weirdo". Wow, what a fucking deep and interesting expression of sadness and alienation, not trite or uninspired at all.

LOL. I'm pretty sure "I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo" is intended in a somewhat ironic sense...I find it amusing, it's reclaiming terms that people sling as insults in a wryly self-deprecating way. I don't think it's attempting to be some overly deep and meaningful expression of sadness. You might want to try investing in a sense of humour perhaps.

Hating colplay is like hating the colour white, seeing nothing wrong with a band like radiohead is like seeing nothing wrong with the colour of poo. I don't know of anyone who given the choice between the two would rather paint their room poo brown.

That's a really bullshit analogy. And I don't "hate" Coldplay, in fact I've even been to one of their concerts. I think they're completely blah, for reasons already stated, and I think it's a sad comment on the state of popular music that they're probably 'the biggest band in the world' right now. And yeah, I never said there was "nothing wrong" with Radiohead. That's a ridiculous thing to say about anything, and I actually concede to many criticisms about even my most favourite bands/musicians. I merely stated that they are far superior to Coldplay, and I've clearly delineated the reasons why I think this and provided examples, and I don't feel I need to re-state myself.  And no, I'm not going to do full page analysis of their song lyrics for you, because I frankly don't care enough about this topic to bother. But feel free to keep clinging to your claim that Coldplay are better than Radiohead, which seems to mostly spring from some imagined notion of pretentiousness and hipsterdom you ascribe to Radiohead, regardless of actual musical quality.

And I'm SO tired of people throwing around the words "hipster" and "pretentious", they're such fucking lazy, knee jerk attempts at criticism. Seriously, you talk about "pretentious instrumentation". Maybe you could provide a list of "pretentious" instruments as well, so I know what to steer clear of. Yeah, like all bands should only consist of drums and guitars, and play their songs in 4/4 time signature, so as not to appear "pretentious". And what's most ironic, is that more often than not the people using such terms are actually the ones with pretentious attitudes and high, misguided opinions of themselves.

I'm going to ignore your use of the word "transcendant" to describe a fucking band.
Maybe that was a bit wanky, definitely not as bad as trying to incorporate non-words like 'subferior' into everyday conversation, though.

Writing crap lyrics isn't funny and the instrumenation is pretentious because it's seemingly random and doesn't work. It's only there to be different. The rest of your arguments are pathetic attempts to flame me. So that's all.

You'd think with all the money from their way-commercial records, one or the other
might have the price of a disposable razor....  :angry7:

haha, i think amanda would be proud of this thread. she stated that one time about how she loved how her fans are able to have PARAGRAPH length conversations and debates... i think this would fall under that category.

i think that's why i like the box so much, too... everyone has their own opinions and are willing to elaborate in an intelligent manner and everyone (for the most part) respects that.

i love this place almost as much as i love coldplay... :p

I like Coldplay sometimes.

I grew up with them as my parents love them.n
And they are my boyfriends favourite band..
(maybe my mind has altered my brain so it can handle them?)

I can understand why people dont like them, they are quite deperessing alot of the time, but I think they make a good sound.
I don't really think any music is bad as bands make their music for people who like that sort of stuff.

Along with all the people who hate them they have alot of people who love them.. seeing as they are quite famous now.

I listen to them from time to time.

Godwin's law is so true, but will there be a counter law about godwins law? Is there a law about people mentioning a counter law? How did other war criminals avoid special laws?

Do I have to be really bad to get my own law?

i am not sure if there is a counter-law to godwin's law, but there is a counter-spell.  the spitting three times and counterclockwise turning is pretty easy, but it isn't easy to sacrifice a chicken on a message board.

there is a law about mentioning the counter-law, unfortunately.  paragraph nine, sub-paragraph 4-a, section six, just below the lolcats etiquette penalties in 'teh couchsurfer's guide to teh internetz'

most war criminals avoid prosecution by ending up in a ditch on fire.  at least hitler did.  or some guy who said he was hitler.

i am not sure how you get your own law. maybe if you make music so bad that it kills nine million people or so, but so far coldplay's record is a little short of that, so they don't have a law yet.

most war criminals avoid prosecution by winning the war.
Fixed, just as a technical point.

(Now, if you want an exciting new corrolary to Godwin's Law, how about one involving comparisons
to Stalin, who was just as bad as Hitler, but largely gets a pass because he was on "our" side...  In
message board usage, it could be used to apply to people who will lose the argument on on the points,
but "win" simply because theey're more popular than whoever's on the other side. You have my permission
to call it Cee's Law)
