Okay, I really have nothing (well not much) against Coldplay, but I finally tracked down
that nagging sense of "I've heard this song before" that I always get when I hear their
new "hit single" Life In Technicolor II...

Yes, we all know by now that they plagiarized a large bit of Viva La Vida from someone
(who had, it turns out, stolen it from someone else, and him from someone else before that...)
...but this isn't even subtle:

i saw them back in june, too. that was the second time i had seen them. the tickets were $97 ($125 after fees) and it was well worth it.
although, yes, some of their music gets overplayed sometimes... fuck, they put on a REALLY good show!!

Not really...  I just wanted to make the one observation about yet another stolen song, but
it didn't fit in an existing thread, nor did it really warrant its own thread...

...so I made a more general thread, said my bit, and left the rest to people with strong feelings
about bands with a pleasant sound, lyrics that seem like they ought to be really meaningful, and
really catchy plagiarized hooks...

I for one can totally get on board with this thread Cee! At best, I consider Coldplay to be generic, bland, whiny and utterly unoriginal. At worst, I think the band could be viewed as a cynical exercise in commercialism, creating a product so blandly inoffensive with pseudo-meaningful lyrics so prosaic that mass audiences are convinced that they "relate" to them. But I don't think Chris Martin is actually that smart.

Considering Radiohead is good at sucking well yeah coldplay is twice as good as Radiohead.

Argh, Coldplay does nothing for me at all. I saw them live at Splendour In The Grass a few years back. It was all just white noise to me..

No, I happen to think that radiohead are the worst headlining band in the world. It's all bland crappy mope-rock. The only difference between the two bands is that coldplay has a higher hit-rate from album to album and doesn't have shitty pretentious instrumentation on every song. Oh and coldplay know how to make a song finish, so they've got that going for them aswell. Almost all radiohead songs overstay there welcome

I like Coldplay, and am completly un-ashamed of it. Maybe they are not the most original band (and no, I'm not talking about their alleged direct rip-offs), just that they sort of took U2 and early Radiohead and made it their sound. Since I like both those bands, and they don't sound that way anymore, I'm glad someone is out there just making good pop-rock songs.

Meanwhile, I get to enjoy Radiohead go off on tangents, and see Bono tear apart U-2's legacy one song at a time. It is win-win for me.
