Songs to play at your funeral
« on: July 30, 2009, 07:48:18 PM »

Hey guys what song would you want played at your funeral?

I don't know what I would have played. I think I'd get someone to play Follow You into the Dark by Death Cab. Or perhaps something less depressing.

Music Box by Regina Spektor, Ghost by NMH, and Blake Says by Amanda Palmer.
All for various reasons.

Lol my friend and I joke about this all the time, I actually have a playlist on my itunes called "funeral playlist". And yes, I am aware this is somewhat morbid/self-indulgent.

It's subject to change, but currently it's gonna go like this, in order:

In The Aeroplane Over The Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel
These Days - Nico
Here Comes A Regular - The Replacements
Pictures of You - The Cure (To be played during a montage of my life...bitches better cry.)
Death - Klaus Nomi

I am also considering putting something like You Don't Know Me by Ben Folds on there for pure amusement value.

I realise that's a fairly long playlist, but seeing as it's my funeral, I think it's the one day where people should be obliged to suffer through my music taste for as long as I want.

I have my list somewhere but I can't find it now. It's a bit cliché but I remember it had:

Twilight - Elliott Smith
Asleep - The Smiths

I love lists. As well as one for my funeral, I have one ready for the staff if they ever put me in a "home". It has things like "don't believe in God, so don't force me to participate in anything religious", "plenty of milk in the coffee", "don't forget to use moisturizer on the legs" and "never put socks on my feet".

Eep, funeral fantasies. These are a symptom of depression. Why do you care what people will listen to at your funeral? Will it really shape the way people percieve you as a person? Don't you have your life with which do that? If I were in a really spiteful and miserable mood I would and pick Jeff Buckleys 'Last Goodbye' and maybe something by Elliott Smith because I want people at my funeral to CRY DAMNIT. But seeing as I'm in a good mood I'm going to go with my initial reaction which is that it doesn't really matter and it actually concerns me a little that this is something people here think about.

'Jump In The Fire' - Metallica
 :headbang:

In all seriousness, I do think 'Lazarus' by Porcupine Tree is one of the most beautiful tearjerkers in modern music. That would be a good funeral song were it not for the line 'Follow me down, to the valley below' that might freak out certain friends and family.

Gorgeous as it is, I might as well just stick with 'Tallica for all the effect that Porcupine Tree song would have lol.

One thing's for sure, I hate it hate it hate it when people say they want Sinatra's 'My Way' at their funeral.

I think I would like that played at my funeral but not the Frank Sinatra version. I want the Sid Vicious version  :headbang:

I just find the idea morbidly amusing, in the same way I find something like Harold's penchant for faking his own death in Harold and Maude morbidly amusing. I don't think there's anything wrong with thinking about death, or laughing about it. But yeah, if you're seriously sitting at home planning the minutiae of your funeral in meticulous detail right down to the coffin trimmings, there's probably something a bit wrong and you should probably just get a life instead.

Oh, and for Elliott Smith you should defs choose Between The Bars, "the potential you'll be that you'll never see", that's poignant, there will be tears. Probably should make sure you die from alcoholism related causes as well, just so it's even more appropriate.  :buck2: (jokes 'n shit).

I would definitely go with Asleep by the Smiths, but I don't want people to cry at my funeral. Actually, I was thinking of making a video before I died and in it I would list all of the things to be done at the funeral.

1. Absolutely NO crying. There will be Crying Bodyguards meaning that they will keep watch on who's crying. If they see someone crying they'll have to escort the cryer out of the building. You can only cry outside of the building as long as you are 100 miles away from it.
2. A cake with my face on it and my famous smile (I do this ridiculous smile and my family makes fun of me for it, so hey why not?)
3. Happy songs are to be played, happy songs with meaning that is. I don't want Ole McDonald being played.
4. Everyone gets 2 grams of weed to smoke after the funeral, that way they can all laugh and be happy.
4. I'd like to have a glass coffin like the one they put Snow White in.
5. And if I have any visible tattoo's or peircings I don't want the make-up artist to cover them up.

If anyone were to scratch these from the list I will haunt them until the day they die, mark my words.

I want many many many songs played...

"Straight To Hell" by the Clash - the whole unedited version. And people think I'm kidding when I say this, but I'm not, I really fucking love this song
"Out Of Gas" by Modest Mouse
"PDA" by Interpol
"Both Crosses" by The Hold Steady
"How It Ends" by Devotchka
"A New England" by Billy Bragg
"Helicopter" by Bloc Party
"Valentine" by the Delays
"Not A Job" by Elbow
"I'm On Fire" by Bruce Springsteen (and yeah, I'm being cremated, but again, NOT A JOKE! xD)
"The Penultimate Clinch" by Maximo Park
"Strange Little Girl" by the Stranglers
"Ceremony" by New Order
"Caroline" by Kirsty MacColl
"Oh My God" by Kaiser Chiefs
"Do Anything You Wanna Do" by Eddie & The Hotrods

and then just as the coffin starts moving towards that curtain thing, I want "Tommy Gun" by the Clash to blast out.

Not so much a funeral as a party, I suppose xD

"Songs at my funeral: "Many Rivers to Cross" by Jimmy Cliff, "Angel" by Aretha Franklin, and I've always had this fantasy that some beautiful, tearful woman would insist on "You're the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me" by Gladys Knight. But who would that woman be?"

Something by CocoRosie, one of those sarcastic songs like Noah's Ark or Armageddon. That is supposing I die young and have a Catholic funeral which would be provided by my parents (fuck you very much) so playing one of CocoRosie's songs would be like saying "fuck you too, Jesus."

Then The Organ Donor's March by Vermillion Lies which isn't very restrained but I'd hate my funeral to be that way and I am an organ donor.. or will be.. when I'm dead.. and such.

And definitely one or two tracks by Sarah Slean and one would HAVE to be from Night Bugs and I'd be inclined to say Duncan or St. Francis, maybe both. I wouldn't mind Hear Me Out being played too.

Have To Drive too and maybe something by Regina Spektor.

I give you these in detail, my compatriots, because you must execute these wishes for me when I die because, whenever anybody talks about funeral music, they get funny looks.

Something by CocoRosie, one of those sarcastic songs like Noah's Ark or Armageddon. That is supposing I die young and have a Catholic funeral which would be provided by my parents (fuck you very much) so playing one of CocoRosie's songs would be like saying "fuck you too, Jesus."

;D Likewise, of the main specifications I have about my funeral is that it should not under any circumstance be in a Church or have any religious associations whatsoever. But if it were forced upon me, and I wouldn't exactly be around to protest, I'd like to have something like Mess by Ben Folds Five, " I don't believe in god so I can't be saved".

I'd go for something obvious too but the priests here usually listen to the songs first before approving them for a funeral so something seemingly sweet like CocoRosie would be perfect.

A neighbour's brother died and they had trouble getting the priest let them play Guns 'n' Roses. :/

No funeral for me. Everybody just has to get shitfaced drunk and scatter my ashes off the top of a tall building onto all the passing people below while singing Fairytale of New York by the Pogues as loud as possible

I would kinda like my coffin to be carried in/out to "The Fool" from In the Aeroplane... by NMH (how can I ever thank AFP enough for drawing my attention to that album btw?!).

Also, I would love "Anything You Love That Much, You Will See Again" by Joe Gideon and the Shark - what a beautiful song.

Sometimes, I get tired of people saying "It's not a funeral it's a celebration of life" so I want my funeral on a bleak, rainy moorside in Winter with everyone dressed in black and sobbing into handkerchiefs and the whole thing officiated over by stern-looking Russian Orthodox priests with deep, booming voices. Pre-recorded music will be Ja Nuns Hons Pris (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBhQK8w0ATU written in a mediaeval prison) and other seriously mournful stuff.

I have a list somewhere, but this was a topic at work yesterday, and a co-worker put forward the idea that they just have their iPod on shuffle for the duration.
I'm intrigued, but have so many guilty pleasures it would likely end poorly.  Something about "Whiskey drunk and hell bound" just doesn't seem like it would go over well.

I want many many many songs played...

"Straight To Hell" by the Clash - the whole unedited version. And people think I'm kidding when I say this, but I'm not, I really fucking love this song
"Out Of Gas" by Modest Mouse
"PDA" by Interpol
"Both Crosses" by The Hold Steady
"How It Ends" by Devotchka
"A New England" by Billy Bragg
"Helicopter" by Bloc Party
"Valentine" by the Delays
"Not A Job" by Elbow
"I'm On Fire" by Bruce Springsteen (and yeah, I'm being cremated, but again, NOT A JOKE! xD)
"The Penultimate Clinch" by Maximo Park
"Strange Little Girl" by the Stranglers
"Ceremony" by New Order
"Caroline" by Kirsty MacColl
"Oh My God" by Kaiser Chiefs
"Do Anything You Wanna Do" by Eddie & The Hotrods

and then just as the coffin starts moving towards that curtain thing, I want "Tommy Gun" by the Clash to blast out.

Not so much a funeral as a party, I suppose xD

Already did it, Whatty, you just missed it ^.^ "Deborah"'s just my latest addition.

Kissing the Lipless by the Shins
White Winter Hymnal by Fleet Foxes
Baby for Pree by Neutral Milk Hotel
You're a Wolf by Sea Wolf
One Red Thread by Blind Pilot
I Will Possess Your Heart by Death Cab For Cutie
November by Azure Ray
and
Milk It by Nirvana...so the guests don't die of Indie poisoning.
I'd also like episodes of questionable content projected on the walls and vegetarian food bars and lots of good scotch. This is if I die before I have children, 'cause they might want the money instead of it being used for projectors and booze.

hmm, I'm note sure... I think I'd want like a four song cycle
1. Something sad and dark, perhaps something like Candidate by Joy Division or Little Motel by Modest Mouse. I wa't the people to be sad that I had to go.
2. Something beautiful, but not poppy or excessively happy, like The Last Beat Of My Heart or Half a Person by The Smiths maybe Lovesong by The Cure. I mostly want a really beautiful song in there, plus it will be a good transition to the next song.
3. Something happy or at least upbeat like At Last I Am Born by Morrissey or Reach For The Sun by Polyphonic Spree, maybe Nine In The Afternoon by panic At The Disco or Hello Goodbye by The Beatles. I wan't people to move on and quit crying now.
4.A bit similar to the last one, but something anthemic. I stuck between Days With You by Jason Webley and Sxip Shirey, All Tommorrows Parties by The Velvet Underground, Ask by The Smiths and Dont Get Lost In Heaven/Demon Days by the Gorillaz on this one. This is the one to send me off.

Of course, I'm only 19 years old, so this (if all goes well) is subject to change, seeing as I don't wanna be one of those people who stop liking new artists after I turn 30, who know, maybe some song from 2080 will be on my list when I actually go.

Run Baby Run by Garbage; Learn To Fly by Foo Fighters; All Apologies by Nirvana.

Nothing that is too much of a downer, really. I'm already fucking dead, so I think my loved ones would already be a little sad, so some "live your life to the fullest" songs. And yeah, I know that All Apologies doesn't fit in that category, but it could play at the beginning, before the more cheerful songs. Only because I truly dig that song.

I think, at my funeral, I would want certain songs that really described a lot of aspects of my life. I mean, we all have our ups and downs, but sometimes our lives can turn into emotional roller coasters. Ere go: the playlist must be varied, and deep, and make people both happy and sad, like they're experiencing something completely unique and beautiful, something that life is/can be/will be...

Yellow - Coldplay
Walk Through Hell - Say Anything
Laughing With - Regina Spektor
Northern Downpour - Panic at the Disco
Ampersand - Amanda Palmer
Keep Breathing - Ingrid Michaelson
Evelyn Evelyn - Evelyn Evelyn
The Garden You Planted - Sea Wolf
Stars/World Spins Madly On - The Weepies
The Guardian Song - Pokemon 2000
Sing - The Dresden Dolls
Lullaby - Jason Webley

if i die, and i am researching alternatives, i used to think i wanted marc almond's 'jacky' playing at my funeral, but since i have calmed down and live more monogamously and have let go of most of my plans for world domination as time-consuming and taking away from my scheduled hours of indolence, i'd rather have a forlorn bunch of trumpeters present when my friends launch the flaming arrows to the longboat containing my corpse and worldly treasures drifting away in oxford lake.

also, the longboat pyre's gonna have to burn fast.  oxford lake's about two and a half feet deep.

I'm giving my body to a body farm, I think. Let it rot in a nice natural way, but be of use to my fellow man at the same time. I didn't want to get buried alive by accident, so I was plumping for cremation, but this is less environmentally horrid, so it's win-win!

Why do they call them farms? It's got nothing to do with agriculture & makes it sound like a necrophilliaics Centre Parcs!

Sorry, I needed to change my av & I had a choice of 5 or 6. This was the tamest (a couple I think would have been removed by the mods pretty quickly should I have choosen them)

I have been on this board & the old Shadowbox for years. So much has changed & with the exception of Kenny & NU there is no one left here who was here when I joined that is still in any way active (even our resident postwhore Mr Cee joined after me  >:D). The Box has changed so has the way I post (I used to post regularly everyday in most threads) So I figured time for a new av & sig revamp.

She did not, however, keep that up.

Anyway, it's still not fair, calling me that...

I have a whole folder of disturbing gifs (surprise surprise) Some too strong to use as my av or sig. I'm not sure where I found the mouse gif but it creeps the hell out of me!

How funny, I was just thinking about songs for my funeral the other day.

Ok, I DEFINITELY want to have:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsmEMk2QOnM
In the Backseat, by Arcade Fire

Plus the album's name is Funeral.

'funeral' by zoe boekbinder.  it would be really ironic and funny.  and somewhat reassuring.
