This or that... or the other thing...
« on: August 04, 2009, 02:23:29 PM »

I feel that "This or That" is starting to lose some of the spark that made it fun, and
so, for your entertainment, I offer "This or That or The Other Thing"...

For example, and to start with:
One hit wonder
or
Never hit the mainstream
or
Sold Out completely and became a corporate whore?

I'm gonna go with
never really hit the mainstream.

Gandalf, Dumbledore, or Merlin (who was betrayed by a girl he was chasing - NOT GAY and neither was Gandalf)

[edit: of course, if you wish to share the whys or wherefores of your choice, it would liven up the
discourse...  not required, mond you, but entirely welcome.]

Actually, I like a little light stubble under the proper circumstances. But out of those four I'd definitely say clean-shaven.

From genres of American literature: Romanticism, Transcendentalism, dark Romanticism or anti-Transcendentalism.

For examples of each:
Romanticism = Ralph Waldo Emerson
Transcendentalism = Henry David Thoreau
Dark Romanticism = Edgar Allen Poe/early Nathaniel Hawthorne
Anti-Transcendentalism = late Nathaniel Hawthorne/Herman Melville

dark romanticism or preferably wierd ficiction (Poe, Lovecraft, Robert W Chambers, James branch cabell,Lord Dunsany)
i do not think that any of these genres are exclusively american

ps why answer Oberon to a specifically Lovecraftian question?

Pullman....simply because he is working now and has the benefit of the others as inspiration...Tolkien is overrated and owes much to writer like Dunsany, C S Lewis is interesting but hindered by overly religious content ( one could argue that Pullman is hampered by the same thing in trying to be overtly anti-religious)
