Songs You Would Cover
« on: August 29, 2007, 07:45:09 PM »

Let's say you're a rockstar--or not, it doesn't matter.

What songs do you think you could make a killer cover of? I'll go first, bitches.

-Garbage Man--Hole

-Mother/Father--Swans

-Milk--Garbage

More to be added, later.

I would cover pretty much every Beatles song. And anything on Neutral Milk Hotel's "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea".

Also, Music Box by Regina Spektor and Thank God I'm Pretty by Emilie Autumn. I'll post more later.

I already know that I do a kick ass cover of "Sedated" by the Ramones. I've tortured people at karaoke a few times with it. Er, well...the second time at a different bar wasn't actually torture, I guess. I had people tell me that I did great and ask me to do more songs. It was an unusual experience for me.

Songs I have covered...not all of 'em, just my fave ones to do:

"Stay" - U2
"Love is blindness" - U2
"My Alcoholic Friends" - Dresden Dolls
"only happy when it rains" - Garbage
"Not a second time" - The Beatles
"I'm Only Sleeping" - The Beatles
"I love you" - Sarah McLachlan
"Hold On" - Sarah McLachlan...I've done this one more than any other; I do it in the same key as well.
"Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" - Sarah McLachlan
"Lucky" - radiohead
"Let's Lynch the Landlord" - Dead Kennedys

one of my fave things to do is use a verse/section from a cover song as an intro for one of mine; I got that from U2, who used to do it a lot live. My fave intro bits:

the quiet section from "paranoid android" by Radiohead
the 2nd verse from Sarah McLachlan's "stupid"
the opening stanza from Bruce Springsteen's "Thunder Road", I jump out after "and that's alright with me".

songs that I am going to cover one day, goddamnit:

"Cloudbusting" - Kate Bush
"The Rain Song" - Led Zeppelin
"indifference" - Kristy Thirsk
"Drawn to the Rhythm" - Sarah McLachlan
"acrobat" - U2
"Heroes" - David Bowie; I've done it a shitload of times sitting around at home - just need to break it out at a gig. Same goes for "Eternal Flame" by the Bangles.

plur

...yeah, yeah - lots of Sarah; the center of her range really suits me.

Songs I currently cover:

Excuse Me- Peter Gabriel (I do this one on Ukulele)
Into the Mystic- Van Morrison
Evil- Howlin' Wolf
Ace Of Spades- Motorhead (Yes, on Ukulele!)
The Seeker- The Who
Bike- Pink Floyd (on Ukulele)

Songs I want to do, mostly on the Ukulele:

Jethro Tull- My God
Gigolo Aunt- Syd Barrett
Blood Roses- Tori Amos
Hyperballad and Pagan Poetry- Bjork
I Don't Want to Grow Up and Misery is the River of the World- Tom Waits

I want to cover almost every song on PJ Harvey's "Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea" at some point.
Of course I would love to cover The Dresden Dolls, but I can't seem to pick a tune that fits me.

For shame! I forgot to mention Bobby Darin's "Mack the Knife"! I did an amazing a ccapella rendition of it for communications class.

Some others I also forgot;

The Beatles - Yellow Submarine
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Chicago - I Move On
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (my friends sang and played guitar, I joined in on the accordion)

Anything by Pretty Balanced. I've fallen in love with pretty much every song they've ever released.

Start Wearing Purple by Gogol Bordello. It is obnoxiously overplayed here, but I will forever love that song.

All The Things She Said by T.A.T.U. I have the sudden urge to change it into a slow, haunting song.

Any metal song... I'd love to play accoustic versions of metal songs just for fun.

She's Got You, by Patsy Cline
I Won't Stand in Your Way, by the Stray Cats
Hong Kong Garden, by Siouxsie and the Banshees
Baby, I'm an Anarchist!, Against Me!

and various metal songs into lounge covers. I'll probably think of more later.

radiohead--creep (i know, that one's pretty obvious, but i always want to)
joy division--love will tear us apart
april march--chick habit
presidents of the united states of america--lump
tommy jones and the shondells--hanky panky
chuck berry--you never can tell*
stone temple pilots--creep

*please note that everything on this list will probably have a punkish/metal twist :)

also, i've been thinking of teaching myself piano and playing dolls songs at the next coffeehouse (it's basically a talent show thing my school does, but set up like a coffeehouse atmosphere DUH) and, of course, singing. any thoughts?
of course, if this happened, i'd tape it for you guys :)

it's probably already been said. but especially b/c when Cobain performed on SNL by himself. and people didn't know how to take the song (its intentions)...there was a silence after...........and i knew exactly what he had just punched me in the face with-------"Rape Me" by Nirvana---err. yeah. Cobain really.

Is there some sort of taping of that floating? I've got to look. Thanks for letting me know of it's existence!

Oh, great. Now they're stuck in my freaking head. I'll be listening to and singing those songs ALL DAY.

I like Nas Ne Dagoniat better than Not Gonna Get Us. . . I'm a sucker for foreign languages.

But the video is kind of fucking weird.

http://www.youtube.com/watch/v/9obulP8Vz-Y

It might not be the actual video, though. I'm trying to watch this on the DL, which basically means I'm just listening to it, so I don't get caught YouTubing.

*edit*
okay, no, I don't think that's the "official" video, but what I saw of it looked kind of jacked up.

This terrible video is the actual music video for this song. I remember seeing it on Fromage 200? and Ed the sock was correct by putting it in.

Moi aussi. Thus, before going to Sweden, the first thing I did is record myself trying to sing along to this song -- without knowing a word of Swedish.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcOQMnd1ZkU

And also this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sB_to7VwjRE

(It's meaning is completely different in Swedish, it means I love you instead of In the jungle... weird. And I'm not ashamed to admit in English, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" is one of my favorite songs of all time... and at given point in my life you can find me randomly singing Aweeeeeee awemawup awemawup de dum...)

Basshunter is actually a techno boy who looks like a porn star whose most famous song is Vi Sitter Har i Venten, is about playing a video game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQ-TZk4gPKM

The Swedes make me laugh so much.

"Aquarius" by Within Temptation

"Chrome" by VNV Nation (and a whole bunch of their songs that have lyrics, even though they're an electronic band > Illusion, Farthest Star, Standing)

"Pagan Poetry" and "Pneumonia" by Bjork. (currently attempting the piano parts to the former, it's hard D:)

I would do a cover of that "Sister Suffragette" song in Mary Poppins.

I fucking LOVE that song, seriously!

Cast off the shackles of yesterday!
Shoulder to shoulder into the fray!
Our daughters' daughters will adore us
And they'll sing in grateful chorus
"Well done, Sister Suffragette!"

Anything that would require a large amount of showing off on my part, though if ever put in the situation I'd probably just play whatever it is that I'm using as a warm up at the time.

I definitely need to cover "Big Ass Rock" from The Full Monty at some point in my career.

Same goes with "Good Morning, Baltimore" from Hairspray.

Even though they're completely on the opposite sides of the musical spectrum.

I totally think that "Robot" from the ru version of t.A.T.u.'s first album would be totally heartbreaking on the piano.

So, If I had the means:

Robot - t.A.T.u.
Dear Salem Laundry Company - Judith Shimer
Guitar Hero - Amanda Palmer
Straight - Amanda Palmer
Boyfriend in a Coma - Amanda Palmer
Mary's Surgeon - Amanda Palmer
Ghost of Corporate Future - Regina Spektor
Pavlov's Daughter - Regina Spektor
Acid Indigestion Pt. II - Pretty Balanced
Perfect Timing - Pretty Balanced

I think Straight would be totally rad if it was played like the chill version of PB's Permanent Guest.

i love covering dolls/amanda songs on guitar. i believe in airplanes is furious but hilarious to play!
lonseome organist makes my fingers tired though.
The Gardener makes me really happy when I play it. Also, Astronaut on ukelele (and kick drum) is a killer =]

elsewhere, i got some great acoustic (pisstake) versions of Toxic by Britney Spears and Stupid Girls by Pink.

If I was in a band, I'd like to open our sets with the Buffy theme tune. As it is, I play Love's Not A Competion by Kaiser Chiefs a whole lot. I'd love to be able to play Love Will Tear Us Apart, but I suck on guitar, so no.

Anything by My Chemical Romance :P

Various songs by Bjork with a tapir doll.

Most of the Dresden Dolls/Amanda Palmer songs, namely "The Astronaut".

"Amaranth" by Nightwish.

Various VNV Nation songs (namely Illusion, Carry You, and Farthest Star)

"Our Lawyer Made Us Change the Name of This Song So We Wouldn't Be Sued" with piano and horns.

You're thinking of "Hey There Delilah" by the Plain White Tees.

I'd cover:
What's Up? [4 Non Blondes]
Landslide [Fleetwood Mac]
Just The Way You Are [Billy Joel]
Brightly Wound [Eisley]
Alone [Heart]
Midnight Train To Georgia [Gladys Knight & The Pips]
Love Song [Jack Off Jill Version]
Every Breath You Take [The Police]
Smoke Signals [Melissa McClelland]

I love playing the gardener too. I used to play backstabber all the time, but got bored with it.

my band has been working on a cover of Zombie by the cranberries, I've been wanting to cover that for well over a decade.

I love playing the gardener too. I used to play backstabber all the time, but got bored with it.

What's Up + Zombie = Bad memories of high school band.
Just add in Smells Like Teen Spirit, Enter Sandman and Even Flow and you have the whole 'cool' setlist put together by our music teacher in an effort to keep us interested. It didn't work.

Thankfully the next year we got a new music teacher who had made it her life's goal to play every known Metallica song on her accordion. She was rad :headbang:

Only if it's a song from the first 4 albums. They died with the release of the 5th one.

on topic: I just started doing Grant Lee Buffalo's "Mockingbirds"; I never thought those high E-flats would be so...effortless, but they are. :)

a list of songs I regularly DO cover:

Bright Eyes - Laura Laurent
Modest Mouse - Bankrupt on Selling
Modest Mouse - Trailer Trash
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Prince - Kiss
The Magnetic Fields - All My Little Words
Sublime - Badfish

I NEEEEEEEEEEED to extend my repetoire massively. It has dwindled terribly since I left college... :(

edit:i just realized that that is because I am writing songs. I'm less sad now. But still a little sad.

I loved who will save your souls by jewel but I have already "covered" it at a school talent show. I would love to do Zombie by The Cranberries or Physical by NIN

I feel like being an old music nerd - Physical was covered by NIN - it was originally done by Adam and the Ants (my first favourite band from when I was 3 - check them out kids they are rad :headbang:). I am amazed by how many people are still into "Zombie". When it first came out it was huge but I didn't think it would endure.

Everytime I sit down at a piano I can't help playing the intro to "Duelling Banjos" from Deliverance. I have no idea why, but it is now my warm up music. For some reason my favourite song to cover is Stand By Me, always has been and I don't even like listening to it that much - I just like to play it :uglystupid2:

Hm Didn't know Physical was a cover. Cool. Zombie is a great song but it's not like I just heard it. I've known it since it came out.... so it may actually not be that it endured. How many kids have heard it these days you know.

I LOVE playing that on guitar. Plus, my dad fits when he hears it, as Deliverance traumatized his childhood.

Probably every dolls song lol
Hybrid/Skin-Siouxsie and the Banshees
This Charming Man/Ask-The Smiths
You never give me your money/A day in the life/Rocky Racoon/Birthday/countless others-The Beatles
Venus as a Boy/others i'm sure-Bjork
A Bit Of Finger / Sleeping Village / Warning-Black Sabbath (well I'd try)
I believe in Symmetry- Bright Eyes
Pick a fucking song-David Bowie (deffinately As the world falls down, though)
Colours-Donovan
Tiny Dancer or Honky Cat- Elton John
Oh Well-Fiona Apple
Thirteen-Garbage
something by Gorillaz, maybe O Green World or November has come
so cliche, but The Somewhere over the rainbow/What a wonderful world medley, you know the one.
Let me Borrow that Top-Kelly. I totally would.
Simple man-Klaus Nomi
Paradise by the Dashboard Lights!! Meatloaf, fuck off, I'm gonna!
Float On-Modest Mouse
Jack's Lament or something else from Nightmare before Christmas
Dumb-Nirvana
Time to Dance/Shes a handsome woman/Behind the Sea by Panic at the Disco
Sign of the Zodiac-Rasputina
Regina Spektor...um..all of them? no, okay then at least Folding Chair and Just Like The Movies..and all of them!
I would love to do a Rocky Horror song, its just that..I hate when anybody but the movie cast does it, so I would have to just not do it out of respect...
Typical girls or impopperly dressed-The Slits
ha, any song from south park or a south park album
your ex-lover is dead by Stars
I Wanna be your Dog/ Raw Power/I need somebody- The Stooges
Burn your life down-Tegan and Sara
Ana Ng/others Im sure- They Might Be Giants
Sunday Bloody Sunday- U2
fucking anything by The Velvent Underground
Crusade/others by Voltaire
Rich or Maps or others by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
something from the Breath of Fire III soundtrack by Yoshino Aoki and Akari Kaida, probably For the Dragons.

this was longer..I cut it down because I didnt want a huge post, and anyway, when the hell will I find the time to preform, much less write my own songs?

I want to do an all-covers show sometime soon. I think it would be fun; my setlist could look like this:

I need you - the Beatles
Mockingbirds - Grant Lee Buffalo
The Needle & the Damage Done - Neil Young
Love is Blindness - U2
Do what you have to do - Sarah McLachlan
The Killing Moon - Echo & the Bunnymen
Work - Jimmy Eat World
My Alcoholic Friends - DD
Fell on Black Days - Soundgarden
Minerva - Deftones
On a Plain - Nirvana
Brom-Yr-Aur Stomp - Led Zeppelin

...the only song I'd actually have to learn would be Work, although I haven't done some of those others in a few years.

I actually have covered a few songs. Every once in a while, I'll open for a friend's band at a local bar. I only play covers, because I suck like that.

I've played these on the piano:

Night Recon - Dresden Dolls
Gravity - Dresden Dolls
Mrs. O - Dresden Dolls
Us - Regina Spektor
Love Affair - Regina Spektor
Emily - Joanna Newsom
Peach, Plum, Pear - Joanna Newsom

And these on the guitar:

Good to Me - Scout Niblett
That Time - Regina Spektor
The Sprout and the Bean - Joanna Newsom (I've done it on the piano too, but never in public)
In the Aeroplane over the Sea - NMH (and about ten other NMH songs)
Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie - Joanna Newsom

I'm usually only up for about a half hour, but those sets add up. I need to start writing songs that don't suck.. I like being on stage.

Brom-Yr-Aur Stomp - Led Zeppelin

:love5:

A lot of those acoustic Zep tunes are ridiculously difficult to sing and play at the same time (if you actually want to do 'em right), but that one wasn't all that tough to do. :)

i just learned the chords to Silverchair's - Those Thieving Birds. i had to watch somebody on youtube.com playing it, and then make my own flipping TAB charts in word. it also helped to know that you need a capo on the fourth fret. xD

now i need to transcribe the chords for Strange Behavior, TTBs 2, Ana's Song, The Greatest View, Miss You Love, search for Paint Pastel Princess, and find a decent TAB chart for Fields of Gold (Eva Cassidy's version), since it's in my head due to my Jazz Vocal Ensemble doing a choir version of it. (of which i still have the music).

i can now, also, play the music for Portal's ending song Still Alive on the piano, but not so well on the guitar, due to how Johnathan Coulton's voicing. eap. ~frowns~ i like the sound of the piano better, anyway. so much myoosic.

If any of you bitches are going to be in Brownsville, I'm covering Dear Jenny in my friend's basement on saturday.

But not like usual, when I get drunk and pound on the piano with my dick and sing badly, at like, three in the morning.

No, this is fo' realzies. There are like, twenty people coming. We're having booze and snacks, and there are a few other people who are going to do random musical things. And some random art things, because I have a case of twenties clothes that I dragged from my grandma's attic, and we're going to get dressed up and take pictures. And maybe run around browntown yelling random twenties catchprases. Twenty-three-skidoo!

Oh, and maybe random sex things, if we get too drunk. It's a party.

had the electric guitar plugged in the other night (something I don't usually do much anymore), and Madonna's song "Like A Prayer" came on the radio. The whole song just spilled from my hands and vocal cords...gonna have to polish it up a lot (I don't really know the lyrics), but I think that one's gonna join the rotation soon. :)

Well, that Madonna song's on the back burner; instead, the following are in the rotation:

"Exit Music" - Radiohead
"Burden In My Hand" - Soundgarden
"Go to the Mirror" - The Who

on deck: "Cloudbusting" - Kate Bush
