The name you wish you had
« on: August 29, 2007, 10:47:31 PM »

I have always hated my name (too common).  What about you?  Love it?  Hate it?  If you could have named yourself what name would you have picked?

I would have loved something more exotic or representative of my background.  Genoveva (hen-o-vev-a) was my grandma's name and I always loved how it sounds.  My Dutch grandparents called me Jentje (yen-cha) and I loved that too.

How about you?

I have a list of about 80 aliases, the majority of which are faintly ridiculous.

I've resisted from calling myself Orlando Furioso for many moons now.

I have a thing for alliteration (my real name is very alliterative), and also for M names. Max, Mungo, Matthias, Mordecai...

But I wouldn't have minded being named after one of my favourite poets, Frances Featherstone.
Or the painter Simeon Solomon.

I also have a very soft spot for the name Jack. For me, at least, it causes such vibrations.

Oh, and Raphael and Gabriel.

And a handful of Nordic names.

I'll stop now.

I used to hate my name because no one had it oddly or they spelled it different. Now I am okay with it. =]

My first name is Judith.  When I was younger I wished that my parents had given me a more feminine, common name.  The names Jennifer and Jessica were big at the time: I had wanted something like that.  Something that other people and, more importantly, my peers were more familiar with - and preferably something that ended in a vowel.  Women on television with those names were pretty and feminine; televison Judiths are nerdy or sharp-tempered, usually in glasses, and are quite often lesbians.  Ever notice that?  When I was about fifteen or sixteen, however, I grew into my name and I've liked it ever since.  Thank god my parents did not name me Jennifer or Jessica - no offense to those with those names, but I'm a Judith.

Monroe. I love that name. I just don't like Lauren much. (Sorry nametwin.) It doesn't suit me.

I am a Monica. I've always loved that name. I was to be a Theresa, but after a long and near-fatal childbirth, for both my mother and myself, I was named after her, Monica.

Well, it's not like you killed someone...

On topic: my siblings and I got our names the same way: my dad would come up with a list of about 6 or so names for each of us, and my mom would pick one. No middle names, and no naming us boys after my dad. I don't remember all of the alternate names for me, but 2 of them were Sergio and Omar. Sergio kinda got ruined in the late '70s, but Omar would've been awesome. Hugo has definitely gotten the job done, however.

i graduated in a class of about 100 kids. i believe there were 6 other jessica's in my class. i've always wanted a different name, to be honest. when i was in middle school, i begged my mom to let me go by my middle name, lynne. she wouldn't let me. jessica is so common, it drives me nuts. it's not necessarily because all of these girls have "my name," but it honestly gets confusing.

I've always loved my name, and I can't imagine going by anything else. I mean, I can because people rarely get my name right, but I can't actually consider myself to be an Amanda or an Amy or a Vallery. I would never go by anything else.
Amber is nice because it is an uncommon enough name that I have only met five in my life -and I've never had another Amber in my class-  but it is still common enough that it doesn't seem odd.

I don't know it my parents ever considered anything but Gladys (after my great-grandmother) for a  middle name, but I have always known that they considered Rebecca-Lynn (I'm an Amber-Lynn, technically) and Amanda for first names.
That's okay with me; I've never liked the name Rebecca, and Amanda isn't on my Top Ten List either. However, I was discussing my name choices with my mother the other day and after talking me out of using the name Lillian (because that's the only reletive's name I stuck in those), she told me she considered naming me Lily-Anne.
This gave me a very odd feeling, because Lily and Anna have been two of my favourite names for much of my life.
I would still never change my name. I am an Amber, and that's working just fine.
