s'nice but i meant what wood would i find at a yard sale.  i've seen some asshole plywood on the insides of those things before.

you'd probably be better off ordering something and cutting it to measure, i'm willing to bet a lot of guitars wouldn't be made out of the best of the best wood, necessarily....and you probably wouldnt want to go cutting into one that was.

a lot of pointy '80s metal guitars (the cheap budget versions) were either maple or basswood. not prime examples of such woods, obviously. those were guitars that sold for about a couple of hundred new.

maple would be nice i think.  even in a laminate, it would carve fine probably.  most large carvings i've seen are laminate in the sense of strips glued together to make one big block.
